Yes, that Jessica Simpson, the one who many critics love to lambaste for her portrayal of an empty headed, hedonistic material girl on the reality show about her and hubby Nick Lachey. Seems she has more substance to her than many (myself included) thought possible:
JESSICA SIMPSON wants to know where missing footage of her and husband NICK LACHEY’s harrowing trip to Iraq got to – because she thinks Americans would like to see just how bad conditions are there.
The pop singers-turned-reality TV couple travelled to the war-torn nation to visit US troops as part of a recent ABC TV variety special, and they were both left shellshocked by what they saw.
But all the controversial moments and harrowing footage of the trip didn’t appear in the fun-filled TV show.
Simpson says, “It was unbelievable. They didn’t show a lot of what really went on with the enemy attacks and the shelling. There was so much stuff that went on and somehow the tapes got mysteriously misplaced.
“It put everything in perspective for me. It really did teach me the definition of sacrifice. I can’t even fathom being out there right now. I was ready to come home.”
Now it isn’t surprising to me that ABC, part of the Disney megaplex of infotainment companies, decided not to run footage of the actual war that just happened to intrude on Nick and Jessica’s reality while the cameras were rolling.
Remember, this is the same American media that chickened out on running an expose on Bush’s wmd lies because the CBS brass didn’t want to appear too political. The same media that sat complacently for months rather than pursue the Plame scandal until 2 of their “colleagues” were threatened with jail time. They are the stoutest hearts, our media. At every turn when offered the choice of investigating the abuses of power going on right under their noses, or bowing down to Karl Rove — well, we know which choice they’ve usually made now, don’t we?
No what I find surprising, and heartening, is that a media created celebrity such as Simpson, whose career literally rests (in my opinion) on continuing to be the 21st Century’s first “It Girl” has chosen to speak out about the censorship. She was in Iraq, saw the violence and risk our troops are being exposed to on a daily basis, and believes that’s the type of thing Americans would want (and ought) to see. I don’t know about you, but Jessica just won over a new fan.
I hope this story gets a little play. It certainly ought to, don’t you think?
Wow, she actually has a brain in her head and an attention span longer than 3 seconds. I’m impressed. But it’s certainly not surprising that footage that might even smell of substance/controversy would be left on the editing room floor, so to speak. But it’s good to know that here eyes were open to it.
That it would take Simpson to “set the bar” of how intelligent you need to be to figure out there is a conservative media bias, and pro-war censorship, and thus allow us to come closer to understanding just how dumb the “GOP talking point brigade” really is?
To be honest, I don’t think she can be as dumb as the media portrays her. To be completely honest, I still think she is really hot. BUT I am guessing that is completely besides the point? (Unlees you are a guy? lol)
Has anyone from “Media Matters” or one of those watchdog groups contacted her about this? She would be an awesome draw to help spread their messages if she were willing.
And yeah, this really is a good “tabloid feeder” to get those that don’t pay attention to the real news problems to wake up a bit.
We know how pro-Bush folks love to read the tabloids.
Since our MSM won’t do it, time for the patriotic folks at the Weekly World News, etc. to rise to the task, with front page stories on:
“Jessica Simpson Almost Killed in Iraq!”
“‘Bush – Hands Off My Video!’ – Jessica Simpson”
“Jessica Simpson Tells Secrets Bush Won’t Reveal!”
“White House in Panic Over Shocking Simpson Revelations!”
“Batboy to Bush: I’m With Jessica; Shove Your Court Job!”
Imagine the cognitive dissonance in the WalMart checkout lines…
Was it ABC that censored the material or was it the Pentagon?
I couldn’t find your e-mail, Hausfrau.,…
Hackett is on Hardball today … MSNBC just promo’d it!
I just saw your diary. Wooohoooo! Yeah!!!!
I also posted my email address on my user account.
Thanks for the great NEWS!!!!
The piece with RFK Jr. on the link between vaccines containing thimerosal and autism. Heartbreaking story that ABC got an “exclusive” on, then canceled it, then when parents of children with autism complained, ABC re-edited it with a pro-pharma slant and ran it sandwiched between pharma ads. Sickening. RFK, Jr. talked about what ABC did on a recent The Daily Show.
If you missed the story, you can read it here in Rolling Stone.
Don’t get pissed, get justice. Send a letter to ABC and tell them that you trust them to make important decisions for you.

CORRUPTS!

corrupts reality absolutely.
RKK is a hero for not stopping his search for the truth for our families.
Fuck this govt and their need to cover up. How many kids did they harm?
And STILL I and other parents get blasted for daring to want answers. THERE IS A FUCKING CONNECTION why else would they cover it up.
Autism is now an epidemic. And no one gives a shit. Till it happens to their child.
Look – look what’s on tv. FOAM and RuNAWAY BRIDES…. yeah that’s really important.. not.
Look – we can dramatized the Iraq war for our reality tv viewing audience with “Over There”
can the soldiers come home FIRST before they make money off of it for tv?
rant off…
This country is NOT about freedom it’s about the almighty buck and how many people they can fuck over.
I really appreciate this. I will definitely write them.
We are exporting the vaccine to third world countries. As if parents in third world countries don’t have enough to face already.
Shameful that the CDC and the FDA conspired with big pharma. I knew the CDC was fucked during the last election when they jumped on the trial lawyer blame bandwagon on the shortage of flu shots. I knew the FDA was fucked when it allowed big pharma to keep writing their own studies and their own warnings. But this is simply criminal.
I bet many autistic children in thirld world countries die at a much faster rate than healthy ones hence deflating the number of children afflicted with this disease in thirld world countries. The heartbreak does indeed continue.
Good for her.
The truth ought to be told. Americans are tough enough to handle it and the troops are brave enough and danger enough that their truth MUST be told.
The Bushies are despicable for hiding their sacrifices and their truths from us.
You know, what you said reminds me of a photo that appeared in an issue of Life towards the end of WW2. It was a picture of a dead American soldier, half buried by sand in the surf where he lay. It was a remarkable picture in that it was one of the first times the American media had published a picture of a fallen American soldier, much less a close-up.
The magazine identified him by name. He had been the subject of a previous article, before he was killed, covering his fight against the Japanese Empire on some lonely island or other. The final article notes that the editors debated whether they should publish it or not. In the end, they said that if he could stand to go out there and take a Japanese bullet in the gut, then we could stand to look at him.
We’ve still got courageous soldiers. It’s too bad we no longer have a courageous press.
Indeed.
Whatever anyone may think of the woman (I’m no fan of pop music, but I think she’s quite talented) this seems to be a brave move on her part. Her comments may not have been as controversial as Natalie Manes’ remarks (spelling issues, I’m sure), but just in speaking out she could very well face career implications. (Yeah, I know – big deal in the scheme of all the horror – but I tend to think it is a big deal on her part – what with all the media monopolies – and I respect her for it)
Good night to all and wishing everyone an ideal Friday consisting of personal successes of every conceivable nature.
