In a “special report” tonight and tomorrow, Olbermannn will be going through the 13 false alerts that were oddly timed with political problems.

Yesterday New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said police would be “slowly winding down” the intensity of subway patrols, after the target date cited in a federal warning about a possible terrorist attack passed without incident. See this.

As Pete Williams said in his report last night, those arrests in Iraq turned up nothing. “Law enforcement officials say today that investigations in the Iraqi city where three men were arrested last week, in response to a tip … turned up no evidence whatsoever of any plan to attack New York. That includes giving the three men lie detector tests, searching their computers, and checking their phone call records.”

Tonight… a postmortem on this latest terror threat, which officials at Homeland Security had said was of doubtful credibility.

And on Wednesday, Keith takes a closer look… As he said yesterday, “…we spoke of at least thirteen [13] coincidences of timing, between bad political news for the government, and a terror or terror-related event… We will be presenting a special report detailing those coincidences on Wednesday night’s edition.”

This is a blatant attempt at military recruitment in Florida at a high school football game.   I think my Democratic senator should step aside.

I read this while I was eating my breakfast this morning, and I just could not finish.  It literally knotted my stomach that this is actually being lauded in a local paper by the political editor. Also, my Democratic congressman is the featured speaker, Senator Bill Nelson.  They are going so far as to swear in the latest group of recruits.  

It is being presented in the article so casually, almost as a good and natural thing.   There has been no time to hear reaction to this, but I hope there most certainly is one.   This does not have to be going on at a high school football game.  I hope there is reaction to it.   The article has a sense of presumption that everyone will be impressed by this.   Frankly I hope others not from this area will react.   This may be going on everywhere for all I know.  It does not make it right.

There is an excellent essay on the difference between the US and European unemployment numbers on the front page.  I want to say that again: IT IS AN EXCELLENT ESSAY.  

I wrote this when the Federal Reserve of Boston released this study.  Given unemployment figures and their computation seem to be a topic of the day, I though reposting it was in order.

Again: many cudos and much mojo to Coleman for his work.

No, not Rove (who cares what he thinks?) – Karl Jaspers.  20th Century German philosopher.  And it seems that some of the issues he put before the German people may be worth revisiting in terms of the brouhaha here at the pond in the last few days.

I’m not taking sides in the recent controversy here; that’s not the purpose of this diary.  What I hope to do is to bring some food for thought to the table, and provide a framework in which we might reflect on our own times and our personal role in them.
