Is Judy Miller in a position to blackmail the NYT?

In thinking about the extraordinary leniency shown to Miller despite her many transgressions, it occurred to me that the NYT itself might have been implicated in promoting the lies Judy Miller had written about. If that collusion between Miller and the Times management was voluntary, Miller may now hold the axe over Sulzberger and Keller and that may make them lenient for fear of exposure of their own roles in Cheney’s orchestrated effort to discredit Ambassador Wilson.

Just a theory of mine.Throw bouquets or brickbats at it.

Fallout from the Miller Affair

by Larry C. Johnson

When Judith Miller went to jail in July I rejoiced because some justice, at least in my eyes, was being visited on a media whore who helped the Bush Administration mix the KoolAid that took us to war. One journalist took issue with my view and praised Judith. I was pleasantly surprised to get the following today from “Bob”. May more Bobs come
forward.

………………………………….

[October 20] It’s been a while since the exchange below but I wanted to step forward to say you were absolutely correct in your appraisal of a certain New York Times reporter. I was wrong, dead wrong. That is clear(er) to many of us now who wanted to believe the best about a colleague. – Bob

………………………………….

[July 30] Her methodology may be questioned by some, but in this case – for good or ill – she represents all of us whose job it is to ferret out the facts. In that regard she’s like Valerie Plame. She may not be the poster child for purity of profession but when somebody picks on her, we rally to her side. – Bob

………………………………….

Bob, Hopefully, though, you recognize the difference between a reporter who gets a story from a genuine whistle blower who is trying to alert the media to a something the government is hiding instead of a reporter whose record was one of spoon feeding wrong information to the American people and helping create the mindset to go to war.

Frankly, the media’s treatment of Miller is making my friends on the inside more nervous about cooperating. They see Miller as someone who was so deeply in bed with the Bush Administration that they are not willing to risk coming forward. – Best, LJ

………………………………….

[July 30] Thanks, Larry. It seems that many of us are invested in the Plame case one way or another. We have a friend, Judith Miller, sitting in jail right now because of it. As the story moves further down the road, I’m sure to ring your bell.

Please remember, any time you discover something a nosy reporter should know, give me a call. Many of us still protect our sources like Judy Miller. Thanks. – Bob

Miller, Our Holy Saint of Reporter Ethics, Testifies For a Federal Shield Law

[From the diaries by susanhu, who hopes you’ll also take part in BuzzFlash’s “Name Judy’s Book” Contest. The grand prize is, like, wow! Deadline: October 28.]

Yesterday, Our Holy Saint of Reporter Ethics™, Judith Miller, testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee during hearings considering a federal shield law to further protect journalists. The only problem is the law she’s arguing for would still have led to her incarceration. But, Miller’s never been much for accuracy and details.

From Miller’s written statement:

Good morning, I am Judith Miller, a reporter for The New York Times. That statement, in and of itself, is extraordinary. Reporters don’t usually testify at Congressional hearings. But the circumstances that in July forced me to spend 85 days in the Alexandria Detention Center in Virginia highlight the urgent need for a Federal shield law to protect journalists and their sources.

I am here today to urge you to enact the Free Flow of Information Act so that other journalists will not be forced, as I was, to go to jail to protect their sources. I’m here because I hope you will agree that an uncoerced, uncoercable press, though at times irritating, is vital to the perpetuation of the freedom and democracy we so often take for granted.

Arnold Breaks Law: Illegal Mail, Fake Union Bug

Originally posted on the BetterCA blog.

The California Recovery Team (CRT) has been violating the law by sending out campaign mail that illegally uses discounted non-profit postage and displays a fraudulent union bug.  Both actions are violations of federal law.  We have requested an investigation by the USPS and announced possible legal action unless they cease their activities.

From our attorney Lance Olson:

CRT’s use of a non-profit permit to get cut-rate discounts on their blatantly political mailing is outrageous.  This permit was either unlawfully issued or is being unlawfully used.  Only organizations that satisfy special standards and have received official authorization from the USPS may mail items using the Nonprofit Standard Mail rate.
