I am writing on behalf of a coalition led by Veterans For Peace that is conducting a 5-day march and caravan of veterans, military families and hurricane survivors from Mobile AL to New Orleans, to make a combined demand to end the war in Iraq and to rebuild the Gulf Coast under the democratic direction of the hurricane survivors themselves.

This march-caravan will begin at Stone Street Baptist Church in Mobile (the oldest African American church in Mobile) on March 14, and it will culminate at St. Augustine’s Church (the largest predominantly Black Catholic Church in New Orleans) on March 19, the anniversary of the beginning of the Iraq war.

We write you to solicit your interest in participating (if you are a veteran, military family or hurricane survivor), and-or supporting this action.

Interest in this event across the nation has grown by orders of magnitude in a very short time, and we now expect hundreds to participate in parts or all of the march-caravan. This unexpected interest leads us to believe that this action will be extremely significant, especially given the renewed national attention on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Members of the coalition include: Veterans For Peace, Iraq Veterans Against the War, Military Families Speak Out, Gold Star Families for Peace (Cindy Sheehan will be there), Savin Our Self (SOS), the People’s Hurricane Relief Fund, Bayou Liberty Relief, Common Ground Collective, C3, and the Mississippi Immigrant Rights Alliance.
