Ahh. I was thinking it was more like boxing, where the title belt can be lost at any time. Good to know, especially given my upcoming 4-late-night absence.
I’ve been off reading in bloglandia. I’m considering if I want to be part of history w/ the whole 1/2/3 4/5/6 thing… Not sure I should stay up that late 3 days in a row though. And the lost hour d/t DLS is really hitting me hard this week.
It is a sore point here in Indiana, but most of us are on the same time as New York, and will remain that way. 12:35AM right now.
The time change happened and we have a primary in four weeks, and there are people that are NOT voting and not voting Republican just because of the time. It should be interesting in the local races.
Thank You. That’s what we are doing, just telling the truth.
I did a radio interview last night and the Republican host asked why I was so negative, my answer:
There is something wrong with your perspective. The PResident lies about ilegal wiretapping and you say it is a good thing, and I tell the truth about the Congressman’s votes and I am negative. The lie is positive and the truth is negative? You should be ashamed of trying to tell people that.
I’m trying to become more of a regular poster around BT (I’m most active on dKos…maybe I know some of you from there?). Just wanted to say hello. I also got to have a pretty good conversation with Booman tonight. 🙂 w00t!
It was great. It exceeded any expectations that I had previously had. We had a fundraiser at Penn, and all the speakers were great – Chris Bowers, Atrios, Paul Lang, Michael Nutter,Dennis Spivack, the two Murphys (Lois and Patrick), and Joe Hoeffel. It was great to see the enthusiasm that ordinary students – ones I usually don’t see at our meetings – be enthusiastic about the candidates so far ahead of Election Day. It’s also inspired me to become more aware of local politics and, schedule permitting, I’d like to get more involved.
Yeah, that was the main purpose of the event. I can’t give you exact numbers, as the treasurer hasn’t given me the numbers yet (she was still figuring that out).
I did get to meet Atrios, and he seemed like a really good guy. His sense of humor is great; he probably gave the funniest speech out of all of them. He also gave us a nice writeup over at Eschaton.
Too bad I didn’t get to speak to him more. I mostly ended up conversing with Booman, which was great in and of itself. I’m probably going to start going to the local ward meetings, mainly to get a grasp of local issues and to chat more with Chris Bowers, who’s also a committeeperson.
I’ve definitely seen you over at dKos, but you probably haven’t seen me…I comment about 10 times a month, at most. But I hand out recommends on comments and diaries daily, it’s very possible you’ve been the recipient of one or both from me.
So is your moniker any kind of takeoff on the TIE fighter from Star Wars? Or is that just coincidence?
It comes from my early gaming days, when I used to play Starcraft all the time (it’s a RTS that’s about 8 years old). I’ve used it for just about everything I do online. That’s the somewhat nerdy history of the name. 🙂
you guys still hanging out up thread, how the heck does everyone keep track of where the conversations are happening. I need my screen split in four, or something.
The easy answer is that there is are more gays in N CA than say Fargo. So for the prairie farm boy living in N CA the experience of living in N CA from a pov of getting to know a very wide variety of folk, was, as they say, priceless.
And I have a longer story, but by the time I tell it you’ll all be moved on to the next lounge.
I thought you were going to leave us confused, and then we started our own version of events about your seedy ca experience … but I think your real story might be juicier. 🙂
I did promise that I would hunt up one of my butterfly pictures. This is not my best one, but it’s the first one I found that I liked well enough to post here:
I think I shot this at the Butterflies and Blooms exhibit at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, although it might have been at the Pacific Science Center. I remember I was waiting for it to land on one of the variegated blossoms so I could get a picture of it on top of the cluster, but it never did.
and most of what I like about the one I’ve got is it’s size. It fits nicely in one of those little pouches with a belt loop.
When ever I’ve traveled I just hated dragging anything bigger than the old Kodak instamatics, (only found in museums now, I suppose) but the Nikon Coolpix 3200 is even smaller than the old Kodak, which didn’t quite fit a a jean pocket.
My film camera is a little Cannon Elf. So size isn’t the issue. It takes great pictures when I bother to use it. The problem is that I go somewhere, I take three pictures, then its a couple of months before I take a few more, so sometimes its almost a year before I develop them.
My daughter has a Coolpix 4600. I liked it so much I bought one for my granddaughter for Christmas. She shows some photographic talent, and I figured better we get her started on it earlier than later.
Japanese tourists in a kind of awe. I don’t think they see anything with the naked eye – only through the lense of a camera. I just don’t think that way.
I went to the zoo with my sister a few weeks ago and she brought her three cameras and I brought my one because I told her I wanted to use up the film from 10 months ago. We would be looking at something and she would turn to me and say — This would be a good picture. Then I would remember to shoot. I just don’t think of it. And I only had to take 8 pictures to use up the roll. I only took 5.
when I lived near the avenue of the giants in N CA the local told the story of the J tourist who was lying on the highway shooting straight up to the top of the redwoods.
Logging truck comes along. No time to get up. So he just lies straight in the middle of the lane, truck tires straddle him on either side, then he gets up, walks off, unharmed I never heard whether they checked his shorts though…?
btw, Seattle is one of my all time favorite cities. I spent a week out there 3 years years ago, and had an absolute blast. The bus system is something that should be copied far and wide 🙂
Only once in my life have I ever been inspired to capture the soul of a butterfly on digital film…I was hiking in Great Smoky Mountain National Park, and it just happened to land in my path.
I love your photos ej — they’re the kind that you think about when you’re drifting off to sleep, sort of dreaming about hiking or hanging out on the beach etc. 🙂
Thanks olivia…same thing right back atcha. Your photos remind me that you don’t have to go halfway across the world to find beauty, you just have to take the time to look 🙂
Every so often a butterfly will land on one of us when we’re at one of our picture-taking spots. It’s very cool, and usually we just wait until the butterfly flies away on its own.
These places are always enclosed and have people at the exits armed with feather dusters just in case you pick up a hitchhiker.
It’s one of many viola cornuta varieties… one of my favorites as well… that lobelia picture has yellow “tiger eyes” varieties in the background.
But yes… it is a flower of some kind! 🙂
I thought you’d like Nighty night … but the DVD is available for season 1, so you could probably find it in the video store… it’s only 6 half hour episodes that leave you wanting even more of the evil Jill Tyrell…
I’m doing great, considering I had a super long day and stayed up way too late last night with ej and cake. I did snooze through part of a French movie I was watching tonight LOL.
In response to your query upstream, Omir… here are some sure fire butterflay magnets for your yard:
Butterfly Bush Davidia species… though I hear they get invasive out your way..
Butterfly Weed Asclepias which you have in your photo, and works like a charm…
Bee Balm Monarda didyma which also attracts hummingbirds…
Purple Coneflowers Echinacea purpurea … don’t know why, but they love these… maybe because they make such a good resting place…
And FINALLY… the oddest, and easiest butterfly lure you can plant? Plain old, garden variety Zinnias. It’s always baffled me what butterflies find in them to feed on, but we plant lots every year, and in mid-late summer, they are constantly visited by butterflies… especially the Monarchs when they come through.
I’d suggest Four o’clocks too, but they usually bloom in early evening when the butterflies have gone to rest… but they’re a Sphinx moth magnet! (witness my pics from the other night).
Want to know more? Ask the great garden pontificator, whenever you want.
Thanks, that’s a great list. I read somewhere that there’s a very simple concoction you can put together to attract butterflies — something like pouring blueberry syrup over a split banana.
I need to ask my sister-in-law the plant freak if she knows anyplace in the area where we can get some of those plants you mention. We are restricted to container gardening, because we rent and the available plots for plants are already taken up by a couple of giant bamboo stands (except for a couple of spots along the front walk where we snuck in some snapdragons when the landlord wasn’t watching), so I guess my question is, are any of these plants better or worse than others for containers?
Hmm, let me work on that one… these are all pretty much need to be in the ground kind of plants (esp Butterfly bush, which is a bush).
You could try bee balm in a big pot, but not sure how that would work out… another option could be getting one of the smaller agastache “mexican mint” varieties will also attract them… Let me do a bit more thinking on container options, and I’ll get back to ya. Bug me if I don’t.
I’ll post a pic of bee balm at the end of the thread so you can see what it looks like.
and quite the contrast with colors, textures, and shapes.
as to how are me? started out behind the 8 ball, dragged butt all day, pickup some health maintenance sunshine this afternoon, got my 3rd wind now that it’s soon to be midnight, and so just feelin’ fine.
which was a shameless lead in to post another example of a blue flower we grow…
Got some major sunshine here today, as well… the bulbs are going wild with the recent rain and warmer temps. I took a ton of photos tonight, but am trying to restrain myself from going hog wild in posting.
in late May or early June… then I chop them back and they bloom again late in the summer… that’s the ‘secret’ of delphiniums… chop em back, as heartless as that sounds…
Planted this baby from seed about 5 yrs ago… it’s a Pacific Giants variety that we lovingly refer to as “the tie dye delphinium” … not pure blue, I realize, but there are such radiant variations of blue in the delphiniums, they’re almost all worth having. Except the pink ones… ewwww.
I’m so excited that you got the image hosting figured out, b/c we are sure getting a ton of wonderful photos. And I’m tucking away that butterfly info for my own garden — and noting what a great resource you are! Thanks!
I’m just an amateur enthusiast for photos… the gardening I am more serious about, but the photos help me illustrate what I do. I’m going to start posting some garden diaries here if people are interested, then I won’t overwhelm the FBC so much with my photographic overflow… 🙂
And will now celebrate by drifting off to bed — taking the image of your photo with me. So I’ll say goodnight everyone, and go and give out the final fours.
They go into the bottom of the eighth inning ahead 6-5, score four runs on the Angels to lead it 10-5, then our normally steady closer Eddie Guardado barfs up three runs and is all over the plate.
We won 10-8 but boy it was close.
And major props to Tim Salmon. One of those homers Eddie gave up was by Salmon, who wasn’t expected to be on the Angels this year and as far as I can tell is playing on sheer guts and determination (and some talent doesn’t hurt).
Oh, you mean the Land of the Six Point ERA? You have my sympathies.
I used to listen to the Tampa Bay games once in a while, mostly to see if Lou Piniella would do anything interesting (like throw a base or bury an umpire’s feet in dirt). They played occasional good baseball, but I’m not sure how much attention I’ll pay to them now that Lou’s gone. They remind me a lot of the first 15 years of the Mariners, except not quite as good.
aka Monarda didyma… comes in several colors, though we only planted the red and purple.. the pink is kinda ewww, but maybe Janet would like it.
It’s in the mint family, so can get a bit “enthusiastic” about growing… so we thin a bit each year and give it away… but it’s a great plant for butterflies, hummingbirds and bees!
Helloooooo?
Any Frogs around?
yep, but I’m off to bed. It’s midnight here in the East. Night.
See you tomorrow!
Present.
I think before long we’ll have James staying up with us. 🙂
I think he’s probably still here, just lurking, pretending he’s going to bed.
That’s ok. He’s a newbie. Some lurking’s ok.
Wonder what ever happened to Family Man today.
I have to assume he’s still recuperating from his victory over me in the late night battle two nights ago.
Have I regained my title yet?
It’s a long season and one big night doesn’t affect the average much. You’re still the champion.
I’m going to bed right after celebrating it East Coast time.
right….<rolls eyes>
First time here. Nice decor.
Barry Welsh Indiana 6th District Democratic Congressional Candidate
Welcome to the Lounge.
Have a beer?
Thanks!
Hi Barry. Good to see you here (though Indiana’s daylight savings time policy confuses me and I have no idea what time it is where you’re at).
It is a sore point here in Indiana, but most of us are on the same time as New York, and will remain that way. 12:35AM right now.
The time change happened and we have a primary in four weeks, and there are people that are NOT voting and not voting Republican just because of the time. It should be interesting in the local races.
Hi Barry. Give ’em hell. Or just tell the truth, they’ll think it’s hell.
We went to station break. (SMILE)
seems like a very typical pattern “they” have to avoid any real truth spilling out onto the air waves.
What are the progessive old timers in your neck of the woods telling you, as to their perceptions of how things are shaping up for this fall?
Heh. That’s a great answer, and right to the point.
What do you want to bet you don’t get a Christmas card from him this year?
I’m trying to become more of a regular poster around BT (I’m most active on dKos…maybe I know some of you from there?). Just wanted to say hello. I also got to have a pretty good conversation with Booman tonight. 🙂 w00t!
Glad you’re planning to be around. How was the rest of the event tonight? (Besides BooMan).
It’s also inspired me to become more aware of local politics and, schedule permitting, I’d like to get more involved.
That sounds great. Wasn’t part of the purpose to raise funds for the college Dem organization? How did you do?
And forget BooMan, did you get to meet Atrios?
Yeah, that was the main purpose of the event. I can’t give you exact numbers, as the treasurer hasn’t given me the numbers yet (she was still figuring that out).
I did get to meet Atrios, and he seemed like a really good guy. His sense of humor is great; he probably gave the funniest speech out of all of them. He also gave us a nice writeup over at Eschaton.

I just wanted to say I always enjoy your Daily Show/Colbert Diaries even when I don’t have time to comment.
Thanks for hosting them on kos
Barry Welsh
I’ve definitely seen you over at dKos, but you probably haven’t seen me…I comment about 10 times a month, at most. But I hand out recommends on comments and diaries daily, it’s very possible you’ve been the recipient of one or both from me.

Man, if you think you have to explain what Starcraft is to me then you obviously haven’t seen me around…I ooze nerdiness like a slug oozes mucus.
Well then, we should get along just fine. 🙂
Very appealing image ej
Hey, I’m not one to doctor the truth.
Sometimes the truth is ugly, Mary.
I know that, but to talk that way around a cafe newbie … we WOULD like him to come back.
We were bonding in our geekiness. You wouldn’t understand.
Really?
He didn’t seem nearly as geeky as you.
<duck>
Not many are, Mary.
That’s okay. It’s nice to not be considered the geekiest in certain parts once in a while.
I didn’t ever think we’d get of the answer to the What is it? photo. What a tease?
And then the answer wasn’t exactly enlightening either, just an enlargement of the original one. And the some confusing explanation of all the above.
I think we’re owed more photos with circles and arrows on them describing the “crime” in much greater detail than heretofore has been revealed.
What are you talking about. He can’t be that sneaky, cuz Bu will tell us!
link to his orig photo here
then hit the next HERE
That was supposed to be between me and dada. You were all still supposed to guess. 😉
can’t keep anything private ’round here…next thing ya know they’ll be delvin’ into yer privates…:{)
Peace
Of that I’m sure. 🙂
not to worry dada, I didn’t spend that long a time in N CA.
.
NDD’s referring to his seedy california living days?
just bud…now they’ve all emigrated to B.C. :{)
Peace
you guys still hanging out up thread, how the heck does everyone keep track of where the conversations are happening. I need my screen split in four, or something.
The easy answer is that there is are more gays in N CA than say Fargo. So for the prairie farm boy living in N CA the experience of living in N CA from a pov of getting to know a very wide variety of folk, was, as they say, priceless.

So that’s where NDD lived, is it? 😉
Okay — I’m going to bed now. It is really late and I have to get up early. Sweet dreams dada — and Bu too!
I’m still guessing, ha!
Yeah — well at least you kept your guesses quiet so you don’t appear crazy. 🙂
I did promise that I would hunt up one of my butterfly pictures. This is not my best one, but it’s the first one I found that I liked well enough to post here:

I’m really impressed.
Everyone is so talented here. Maybe someday I’ll have to buy a camera … 🙂
Thank you kindly. I like shooting butterflies — I also have some pictures around here someplace that I took at Victoria’s Butterfly Garden.
I need to read up on what sorts of things butterflies like to eat so we can attract a few to our back yard this spring.
no camera?? How have you lived with out one?
I never take pictures. I actually have a camera (somewhere) but its not digital.
I’ve dragged that camera around the world. I completely forget to take pictures
and most of what I like about the one I’ve got is it’s size.
She shows some photographic talent, and I figured better we get her started on it earlier than later.
on my tour of Norway.
She said that an American couple was asked, “How was your vacation?”
They replied, “We don’t know, we have’t gotten the film developed yet?”
I suspect you’d have an answer to “How was your vacation?”
Japanese tourists in a kind of awe. I don’t think they see anything with the naked eye – only through the lense of a camera. I just don’t think that way.

That’s funny. But are you sure it’s not an urban myth?
no urban in that area, hence, prima facia, no urban myth!
… to my eyes Omir. This is really lovely. And is that a hint of pink I see there… 😉 I hope that you’ll post more of your photos.
just in a different language; of colors and shapes. I’m looking forward to more bf posts.
All these photos by everyone are just so great to stimulate creativity in areas I’d have never considered.
That is a truly beautiful picture, Omir.
btw, Seattle is one of my all time favorite cities.
Hey ej — can you post that GSM photo w/ the tent if it’s handy? I love that photo.
This one?
I love your photos ej — they’re the kind that you think about when you’re drifting off to sleep, sort of dreaming about hiking or hanging out on the beach etc. 🙂
Thanks olivia…same thing right back atcha. Your photos remind me that you don’t have to go halfway across the world to find beauty, you just have to take the time to look 🙂

Now I’ll raise ya 2 clumps of African Lobelia (for DTF)…
How you doing out there my friend?
And so glad to see MaryB, ejmw, NDD, Olivia and the rest of the gang are holding the place together! How’s everyone doing?
Blue yellow combinations are my favorites.
How are you tonight? The other night you recommended some TV show for me to watch? Unfortunately (or fortunately) I don’t have cable.
Another thing we have in common! (though we call it ‘maize’ and blue)
Like this?
(image borrowed from here)
That’s exquisite. What is it?
I have no idea. It looks like some kind of flower or something.
I’m a computer nerd, not a plant expert.
Is it time?
yes.

See you tomorrow!
that we just passed 01:02:03 04/05/06 (eastern time).
Wow. That was great. I think I need a cigarette.
It was good for me too. Now I’m rolling over and going to sleep.
See you all in the morning.
You’re in charge of the cafe ej 🙂
And will now celebrate by drifting off to bed — taking the image of your photo with me. So I’ll say goodnight everyone, and go and give out the final fours.
See you tomorrow!
Read about that today… aren’t we all special for having lived through it to tell the story? Kind of like Y2K, huh? <passes ej a Camel>
I hope that’s a cigarette you’re passing me, and not a dromedary.
and it looks like your time stamp nailed it too.
took this one after work tonight.. it’s the same plant I posted last night, but with many more blooms open today… Glory of the Snow

They played occasional good baseball, but I’m not sure how much attention I’ll pay to them now that Lou’s gone. They remind me a lot of the first 15 years of the Mariners, except not quite as good.
Right over here.
aka Monarda didyma… comes in several colors, though we only planted the red and purple.. the pink is kinda ewww, but maybe Janet would like it.
It’s in the mint family, so can get a bit “enthusiastic” about growing… so we thin a bit each year and give it away… but it’s a great plant for butterflies, hummingbirds and bees!
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen that at the zoo, although theirs was a different color.
I had to search for the Lounge with a magnifying glass. 117 comments and only one recommend (from emjw), so it’s really slipping down the page.
So someone tell me once and for all if it is uncool to recommend the FB Lounge? HUrts to be uncool!
