I can’t count the number of times I would hear one song I liked, buy the album and the rest, nah.
The last CD I bought was that way. I can’t even remember the guy name now, but I liked the song. Bought the CD and only 1 song out of 10 I thought was good. Argggg.
Oh I recall it very well and there was no ‘hearing’ the music. And other than a Mott the Hoople/Edgar Winter concert, it was the worst concert I went to — the venue was huge and the sound equipment wasn’t up to it or the screaming fans.
OTOH, waiting to go was one of the most exciting moments of my adolescence.
I know I’ll be pelted with rocks, but I never really got into jazz that much. Some things every now and then, but not a lot. Same with old country music. Never could handle it.
I sort of went from the Lettermen, to soul, to hard rock, to Euro pop, and now I’m just started getting into celtic music.
If I was not on the net it would probably be no new music.
Ah well then, you don’t need to send me your address.
(Note to self: no jazz for FM!)
I think listening to jazz requires a different set of ears than most music does — & replacing one’s own ears can be a tricky process!
I was never much into old time country ’til I moved to Asheville for a while & heard the standards played live. Knew scores of extremely talented musicians down there & they made it sing.
Some old and very old music. The sad thing is I don’t even remember some of these songs.
Bat Out Of Hell – Meat Loaf
If She Would Have Been Faithful… – Chicago
It’s Been A Long, Long Time – Charlie Spivak And His Orchestra

Good Morning Good Morning – The Beatles
Take Another Look at Your Heart – Bonnie Tyler

No music, but I thought that I would stick my head in the old FBC two nights in a row. Still grading papers, but I’m trying to be relaxed about the whole thing.

well I just disturbed any dust that had the audacity to consider settling around there. I am going to re-commit myself to regular reminders for health, which is what your site was allowing me to do.
I finished the Alchemist’s Daughter. I liked it, though I have some quibbles (which I won’t mention in case you read it). The writing’s very good — it’s intelligent, evocative, and has emotional depth.
I’d try the listing thing but short term memory’s full at the moment.

The Texas Chili Cook=Off
Enjoy, I ROFLAO’d when I read it…hope the length doesn’t offend, he’s kinda verbose…:{)
The notes are from an inexperienced chili taster named Frank, who was visiting Texas from the East Coast:
Frank (Judge #3): “Recently, I was honored to be selected as a
judge at a chili cook-off. The original person called in sick at the last moment and I happened to be standing there at the judge’s table asking directions to the Budweiser truck, when the call came in.
I was assured by the other two judges (Native Texans) that the chili wouldn’t be all that spicy and, besides, they told me I could have free beer during the tasting, so I accepted.”
Here are the scorecards from the event:
Chili Number One: Mike’s Maniac Mobster Monster Chili
Judge # 1: A little too heavy on the tomato. Amusing kick.
Judge # 2: Nice, smooth tomato flavor. Very mild.
Judge # 3: Holy shit, what the hell is this stuff? You could remove
dried paint from your driveway. Took me two beers to put the flames
out. I hope that’s the worst one. These Texans are crazy.
Chili Number Two: Arthur’s Afterburner Chili
Judge # 1: Smoky, with a hint of pork. Slight jalapeno tang.
Judge # 2: Exciting BBQ flavor, needs more peppers to be taken seriously.
Judge # 3: Keep this out of the reach of children. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to taste besides pain. I had to wave off two people who wanted to give me the Heimlich maneuver. They had to rush in more beer when they saw the look on my face.
Chili Number Three: Fred’s Famous Burn Down the Barn Chili
Judge # 1: Excellent firehouse chili. Great kick. Needs more beans.
Judge # 2: A bean less chili, a bit salty, good use of peppers.
Judge # 3: Call the EPA. I’ve located a uranium spill. My nose feels
like I have been snorting Drano. Everyone knows the routine by now. Get me more beer before I ignite. Barmaid pounded me on the back, now my backbone is in the front part of my chest. I’m getting shit-faced from all of the beer.
Chili Number Four: Bubba’s Black Magic
Judge # 1: Black bean chili with almost no spice. Disappointing.
Judge # 2: Hint of lime in the black beans. Good side dish for fish or other mild foods, not much of a chili.
Judge # 3: I felt something scraping across my tongue, but was
unable to taste it. Is it possible to burn out taste buds? Sally,
the barmaid, was standing behind me with fresh refills. That 300lb bitch is starting to look HOT — just like this nuclear waste I’m eating. Is chili an aphrodisiac?
Judge # 2: Chili using shredded beef, could use more tomato. Must admit the cayenne peppers make a strong statement.
Judge # 3: My ears are ringing, sweat is pouring off my forehead and I can no longer focus my eyes. I farted and four people behind me needed paramedics. The contestant seemed offended when I told her that her chili had given me brain damage. Sally saved my tongue from bleeding by pouring beer directly on it from the pitcher. I wonder if I’m burning my lips off. It really pisses me off that the other judges asked me to stop screaming. Screw those rednecks.
Chili Number Six: Vera’s Very Vegetarian Variety
Judge # 1: Thin yet bold vegetarian variety chili. Good balance of
spices and peppers.
Judge # 2: The best yet. Aggressive use of peppers, onions, and garlic. Superb.
Judge # 3: My intestines are now a straight pipe filled with gaseous, sulfuric flames. I shit myself when I farted and I’m
worried it will eat through the chair. No one seems inclined to
stand behind me except that slut Sally. She must be kinkier than I thought. Can’t feel my lips anymore. I need to wipe my ass with a snow cone.
Chili Number Seven: Susan’s Screaming Sensation Chili
Judge # 1: A mediocre chili with too much reliance on canned peppers.
Judge # 2: Ho hum, tastes as if the chef literally threw in a can of
chili peppers at the last moment. I should take note that I am
worried about Judge # 3. He appears to be in a bit of distress as he is cursing uncontrollably.
Judge # 3: You could put a grenade in my mouth, pull the pin, and
wouldn’t! feel a thing. I’ve lost sight in one eye, and the world
sounds like it is made of rushing water. My shirt is covered with
chili which slid unnoticed out of my mouth. My pants are full of
lava like shit to match my shirt. At least during the autopsy,
they’ll know what killed me. I’ve decided to stop breathing, it’s too painful. Screw it, I’m not getting any oxygen anyway. If I need air, I’ll just suck it in through the 4-inch hole in my stomach.
Chili Number Eight: Tommy’s Toenail Curling Chili
Judge # 1: The perfect ending, this is a nice blend chili. Not too bold but spicy enough to declare its existence.
Judge # 2: This final entry is a good, balance chili. Neither mild nor hot. Sorry to see that most of it was lost when Judge # 3 passed out, fell over and pulled the chili pot down on top of himself. Not sure if he’s going to make it. Poor dude, wonder how he’d have reacted to really hot chili.
I vaguely remember being taken to see a group of bands at a large concert venue, because my eldest maternal uncle managed one of the bands & he’d generally invite the entire family to the shows, complete with limos.
So, I saw quite a few bands at once who were popular at the time; I was told I fell asleep for The Doors.
Last concert: not sure — I’ve got vast, gaping holes in my memory from about ’82 to ’97.
Last concert I remember is a show by King Sunny Ade’, master guitarist from Nigeria, in about ’85. Danced like mad.

I log on to put this up, and you beat me to it…I’ll be ack with my 10 in a minute.
getting ready to go to Baltimore.
We were, and the afternoon cafe was moving along slowly, so I kind of let it go for a bit. Thanks for posting this one, though!
I know 3 of the songs and 4 of the group/artist.
My guess for the 4 you know:
Beatles
Janis Joplin
Joan Baez
Charlie Parker
Charlie Parker no, Suzanne Vega yes.
I love Suzanne Vega.
I think she is fantastic. What I don’t understand is why she can’t feed my need by putting out albums more frequently.
Damn her! How could she be so selfish 😉
Oh my goodness, FM! No Charlie Parker?
Slip me your snailmail address, my dear & let me send you something.
I’m located at sylvan1atlocalnetdotcom.
I heard of Charlie Parker, but that’s about all.
Unless I heard it on the radio…..
I can’t count the number of times I would hear one song I liked, buy the album and the rest, nah.
The last CD I bought was that way. I can’t even remember the guy name now, but I liked the song. Bought the CD and only 1 song out of 10 I thought was good. Argggg.
That was about 2 1/2 years ago. 🙂
Yep, that’s how they hook ya. I did quite a bit of that myself as a young’un. A hell of a lot of crappy music was dumped on us that way in the ’70s.
Then I started seeing live shows & dropped the recordings altogether, unless I could tape ’em off the radio.
(Sssh, don’t tell anyone. I think it’s illegal.)
Ah concerts, I remember them well. The last one I went to was back in 89.
Who was it?
And: who was the first?
(Let’s age ourselves properly, shall we?)
First one is easy — Beatles, 1964.
Really! What do you recall?
I understand hearing the music on that tour was somewhat difficult.
Egad, I’ll bet! I would’ve loved to go — I was just as fanatical as anyone else.
Too short, though.
1st concert – The Clash in 1984
The last concert – They Might Be Giants just last summer
The Clash in ’84? Excellent!
I bypassed an opportunity to see them at the time.
TMBG played Asheville just before I left town a few years ago. Missed that one too!
The Clash were mega-loud. My ears rang for a week. But it was a great show.
Did you mosh, Toni?
🙂
What about you ww?
I’ve been trying to remember.
Meet me down on the left, if you like.
ok
FM, if you’ve heard bebop jazz — or any manner of jazz recorded since — you’ve heard Charlie Parker.

I was never much into old time country ’til I moved to Asheville for a while & heard the standards played live. Knew scores of extremely talented musicians down there & they made it sing.
Never heard of her but I feel oddly affectionate toward Laura Love.
she call her style afro-celtic.
Some old and very old music. The sad thing is I don’t even remember some of these songs.

Tracy Chapman, my Cleveburg homie. I love her voice.
I liked her ever since her first album.
the one with Fast Car? I really like that song and her voice is so powerful.
That’s the album the song up thread came from. I agree, always one of my favorites.
That’s a 10 song set I would listen to in the car on a drive.
Thanks Jim. I’m looking at my random selections now as my yard work songs. I never use the mp3 otherwise.
Are you getting used to those earbuds?
No they still have me stumped how to keep them in. I took Andi’s advice and took the foam off, but still the same.
I’m beginning to believe there’s some engineer somewhere, laughing his butt off thinking of all the people trying to keep ear buds in.
I gave up on my iPod’s earbuds. I use Sennheiser headphones.
No music, but I thought that I would stick my head in the old FBC two nights in a row. Still grading papers, but I’m trying to be relaxed about the whole thing.
Hi Toni. You relax and take some time for yourself.
I will. I plan on doing a little gardening this weekend.
Well I’m glad to hear that. I’m forming a picture of you and Andrew out in the garden and it looks so sweet.
You enjoy yourself.
(lurking)
Hi KB.
Is it really lurkning if you type it?
(unlurking)
Yes.
(lurking)
Hello KB!
I don’t suppose you’ve considered handing those papers over to Andrew to grade — I’m sure he could get through them really fast.
Ohh, I have considered it. Any paper on which he spits (his newest discovery) fails.
My grading is done until the middle of August.
Actually it was done last Monday so I spent 3 days of teaching without worrying about taking grades. It was a Tommy moment – “I’m Free.”
When did you start school? I’m in until June 9th and that’s really early for us.
We started on August 15. We’ll begin on August 16 this coming school year.
I would rather go later in June and start after Labor Day, but I’m not the philosopher king yet.
August 15th is too early. Any idea why school starts so early for you?
The powers that be want the first semester to end at Xmas break. I have no idea why, but they decided several years ago that we needed to align our calendar with the universities in the area.

I only got 1 of yours CG.
Got your packing all done?
What instrument does Mike Gordon play. Can he really keep up with the magic fingers of Leo Kottke?
Mike Gordon is a bassist, with the band Phish.
He has 2 collaborative albums w/ Kottke. the first Clone and the second, from 2005, Sixty-Six Steps, quirky albs by two very talented musicians that play together in quite interesting ways.
Alien Ant Farm’s version of “Smooth Criminal” cracks me up.

We’re Blogging Shalom in the Home.
But I can hang out here at the same time.
KB, your link doesn’t seem to work.
I deleted the story. For stupidity.
Lovely selections tonight, folks. Wish I could play! Alas, all I have at random here are books, vinyl & assorted neglected mail.

I’ve yet to say hello, katiebird. I’m a cad.
Hello!
(unlurking) Hi!
How’s the water in your corner of the pond, kb?
I’m sorry I’ve yet to visit your site. I’m trying to curb my OL time, now that I’m supposedly urgently involved in real life.
It’s very, very quiet these days.
well I just disturbed any dust that had the audacity to consider settling around there. I am going to re-commit myself to regular reminders for health, which is what your site was allowing me to do.
HI EVERYONE!!!!
Get your desk cleared so it’s 3 days smooth sailing?
The desk is definitely not cleared but I’m taking the three days regardless.
😀 😀 😀
I saw!! What a thrill. And I answered, too.
{{Manny}}
Hope you have a nice long weekend ahead.
I will, it started last night.
Slacking is something I excell at, but I’m practicing for the Geezerhood. So with that I’ll bid all good night.
Night all.
now that the hockey game is over?
I was playing w/ some more flower photos I took tonight as well.
I’m rooting for not-sabres.
I finished the Alchemist’s Daughter. I liked it, though I have some quibbles (which I won’t mention in case you read it). The writing’s very good — it’s intelligent, evocative, and has emotional depth.
I’m just about to head to bed and wondered if you’d be available to open another cafe if it is needed.
it’s only 8:28!!! 😉
I’ll be around this evening too to help out.
Good night.
hey really great phots o, especially the lady bug porn…. yuk yuk yuk!
🙁
against you if you are lurking at your own blog? I was heartbroken having to do that this week as chaos ensued around the office.
(are you opening up the next one, or should I?)
But seeing as how you’ve got all those great contributers holding down the fort, you’ve got a few leeway days.
And I’m glad you’re week from hell is over.
You can. 🙂 I don’t want to creep anyone out tonight LOL.
yes at the b…. ok for the comment next time…. it’s a little tricky to type and cycle at the same time… still getting the hang of it….
And of course, a weather and site metre nerdess. 🙂
glad FM has gone to bed and won’t see that one!
Have a good night, FM! See you when the sun shines.
Night FM

That’s pretty damn funny!
if you haven’t read it. I don’t know who this guy is, and my buddy keeps it a secret, but he’s got a bizarre sense of humour.
is always appreciated here, inasfar as it differs from what’s considered ‘serious news’ nowadays.
Thanks, dada.
that the ‘serious news’ is really a bizarre joke…

Slept through the Doors? That was almost my reaction to Oliver Stone’s movie!
As to your moshing inquiry, those are big boys in those mosh pits, so I stayed far away and just stood on my chair.
A wise move — enabling you to be safe & sound here with us today.
As for the Doors movie: what dreck!
It’s time to call it a night. Enjoy yourselves.
I’m slowly on the way out too, Toni.
Have a good night! Kiss the sweet child for me.
come on over for some late night, puppy-dog love at the new lounge.
