Just as a note, the original title of this was “Happy Holidays.” I looked at it for about ten minutes after I posted it and decided to change it. I’ve been taken more literally than I’m accustomed to lately and I would be heartbroken if that happened with this picture and that title. I hope the change makes sense.
Looking at this picture, which is an excellent one by the way, just makes me believe more fervently in an America which no longer exists; one in which private moments of grief and joy were kept just that…private.
I’m conflicted about this picture. If it were any of us, would we want someone standing around taking our picture and selling it? (Not me). On the other hand, would we even notice that someone was taking a picture? (Probably not). And still on yet a further other hand, would this photo not be a beautiful keepsake after the monstrous waves of grief had settled to more peaceful ones lapping at the shore of our awareness every day?
They were sent there on our behalf and are fighting in our name. They are ours, and they are us. My opinion is that Americans need to see more of these pictures, and they need to here more from combat veterans like Hellblazer in Military Tracy’s diary Fight To Survive.
Bushco has been so good at sanitizing the war for the public, and many people are struggling economically to stay afloat, like TxSharon, who in her diary at My Left Wing, asks us to Look At The Face Of The Working Poor, and have a hard time just surviving, let alone fighting to get Bush out of office. To her great credit, and to the great credit of so many Americans who are struggling themselves, they still get their asses out there and do what they can to make a difference.
The only thing that conflicts me about pictures like this is, being able to honor a sacrifice and say that it wasn’t in vain, beautifully and starkly expressed by the words of Military Tracy’s husband when he says, “None of my soldiers died in vain, but my government killed them in vain!”

The title is good Chris. Being on the web does make you slow down and think before acting, which is good – at least for me.
This photo makes a lie out of all the b.s. talk of glory and noble causes. Thanks for the link.
Sadly, this is probably the most appropriate picture of the flag that you could post on this Independence Day weekend.
I stand in witness to the immeasureable grief caused by this imperialistic administration.
I pray. I humbly pray that God will bless America and restore her to her highest original ideas.

so, are you saying that the pictures of the Kennedy family during the time of his (JFK) funeral was not needed?
Unfortunately, this photo is wholly appropriate given our current state of affairs. I would just hope that those depicted feel the same way.
4th of July this year. So let’s have it! The whole truth. The whole real 4th of July along with the patriots that clammyc’s diary points out as well.
