UN Committee caves under pressure on global warming The World Heritage Committee (WHC), part of UNESCO, has rejected a motion calling for cuts in greenhouse gas emissions at a meeting in Lithuania. The panel heard evidence that 125 sites including the Himalayas, the Tower of London, and the Great Barrier Reef are at risk from climate change. Campaigners wanted the WHC to agree that the only way to protect such sites was by reducing emissions, which would have obliged governments to make cuts, but this option was rejected. A further clause encouraging countries to draw on projections from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) when assessing risks to World Heritage Sites was also rejected. Environmental campaigners reacted with frustration, and blamed the move on lobbying by governments opposed to restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions.
On a happier note, people can live long, happy lives without consuming large amounts of the Earth’s resources, a survey suggests. The 178-nation “Happy Planet Index” lists the south Pacific island of Vanuatu as the happiest nation on the planet, while the UK is ranked 108th. The index is based on consumption levels, life expectancy and happiness, rather than national economic wealth measurements such as GDP. Latin American nations dominate the top 10 places in the index, while African and Eastern European nations fill most of the bottom 10. Among the world’s largest economies, Germany is ranked 81st, Japan 95th, while the US comes in at 150th.
Astronomers have figured out how massive black holes visible at the edge of the universe were able to grow to the mass of a billion suns, a process which doesn’t happen in our immediate neighborhood (fortunately) because if a black hole “eats too fast,” the disk of matter surrounding it overheats and blows apart, leaving the black hole without a source of additional matter.
Researchers have uncovered new evidence that sleep improves the brain’s ability to remember information. Their findings demonstrate that memories of recently learned word pairs are improved if sleep intervenes between learning and testing and that this benefit is most pronounced when memory is challenged by competing information.
Pronghorn antelope might be eliminated from Yellowstone National Park due to development along their migratory routes, blocking their access, unless action is taken to protect the routes. Pronghorn have used the existing migration route in and out of the Yellowstone ecosystem for at least 6,000 years. Animals travel up to 30 miles a day, clambering over 8,500-foot mountain passes, and moving through bottlenecks now barely wider than a football field due to recent residential development. Increased petroleum extraction could further impact the migration route. Six of eight antelope migration corridors in and out of the Yellowstone ecosystem have already been lost.
Sometimes the BushCo tactic of sending a scientific finding they don’t like back for “further study” backfires… Case in point: Dioxin — present in some US water, soil, food supplies and most Americans’ bodies — should be cleaned up to a new, much higher standard. The National Research Council has confirmed many of the findings of a 2003 report on dioxin by the EPA, which found dioxin causes cancer and reproductive and immune-system disorders in humans. Even though the EPA draft report was made public three years ago, its findings were not reflected in policy, letting a lower cleanup standard stay in force. The National Academies panel said at a briefing that the EPA’s recommended standards — which are as much as 10 times more stringent than the current ones — should be applied within a year or so, with no further data-gathering required.

Women rethink a big size that is beautiful but brutal
I find this reprehensibly extreme, but not totally surprising in a land of crushing poverty. When Europe was full of starving peasants, it too had a full-figured standard for feminine beauty, perhaps back to the earliest times (we’re talking over 20,000 years ago there).
Very low weight can cause infertility, thus in such cultures there’s a fundamental reason such a standard of beauty evolves – it’s not just a status symbol, at least initially.
