Good morning everyone. The big day is here. I had to wake up early and trudge ten blocks to wait for movers to show up at my friends house. They are on a flight to Dubai, where they will live the next two years (sniff) but their movers were a no-show yesterday. It’s brutally hot in their house and there is nowhere good to sit. This is not my idea of a good way to start my day. August 8th is not one of my favorite days anyway. Today would have been the 37th birthday of one of my closest childhood friends. But he ended his life when he was only 22. I’m hoping Ned Lamont will give me something more positive to associate with August 8th.
Chris Bowers predicts that Lamont will win 52.2-47.7. Greg Pollowitz, of the National Review Online predicts Lamont by two. Dick Morris says that Lieberman will lose. Zogby says that Lamont will win by a substantial margin.
Then there is this:
“The question to me is much less, ‘Hey, are Democrats going to take control of Congress?’ as much as it is, ‘Hey, can the Republicans do anything to stop it?’ ” says Amy Walter, House analyst for the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.
If you’ve got any Lamont news, or any good news at all, jot it down in this thread
Welcome clammyc to the front-page. He’s going to be doing some posting for us.
Welcome Clammy C!!! I love your work and am looking forward to your front page posts. Great pick, Booman.
Let’s hope that by the end of the day we’ll also be welcoming Ned Lamont to the Democratic list of Senate nominees.
I’ll second the welcome to clammyc and I think it’s an excellent choice!
Good choice.
I was just thinking yesterday that he would be a great addition. Welcome clammyc!

Eighty-one percent of Democrats say the war was not worth fighting, and 70 percent feel that way “strongly.” A majority of Democrats, 54 percent, say a candidate endorsing Bush’s Iraq policy would be less likely to get their vote, compared with 37 percent for whom it would not make much difference. Two in three Democrats say it is time to begin decreasing troop levels in Iraq, although only one in four supports immediate withdrawal.
Especially worrisome for members of Congress is that the proportion of Americans who approve of their own representative’s performance has fallen sharply. Traditionally, voters may express disapproval of Congress as a whole but still vote for their own member, even from the majority party. But 55 percent now approve of their lawmaker, a seven-percentage-point drop over three months and the lowest such finding since 1994, the last time control of the House switched parties.

WASHINGTON — President Bush’s overall approval rating stood at 40 percent, with 58 percent disapproving, a Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll has found. The poll provided several indications of the political opposition he faces and the polariz ing nature of his presidency.
Discontent with Bush’s leader ship was found on a variety of key fronts, including the war in Iraq (60 percent disapproval) and the economy (59 percent disapproval).
…
The poll gave Democrats an 11-percentage-point advantage when registered voters were asked which party they would prefer to win in their congressional district. But the survey also offered evi dence of political troubles for Democrats.
For instance, Democrats trailed Republicans, 34 percent to 30 percent, when poll respondents were asked which party they trusted to do a better job protecting the country against terrorism. And 50 percent expressed approval of Bush’s handling of the war on terrorism.

I just got this from Congresswoman McKinney:
What is happening to our democracy???
One without her name!!!!
Is there a source on this outside the Congresswoman’s email?
It’d be interesting to see who’s doing the reporting and coverage (or not as the case may be).
So, where’s your prediction for the results, BooMan?
so I woke up before seven, even though I was up til past three. Then I trudged all the way down to the Italian Market. Then I waited for the movers. Supposed to be here before 10.
Just got a call. At 8:30 the driver decided he couldn’t his truck down Montrose, so he just left. No notice, no nothing. How far did he have to walk? Half a block.
So no moving today. And since the ship for Dubai sails tomorrow, no stuff for my friends for a very long time.
I was wondering how they were going to get down Montrose.
Why didn’t they call at 8:30 when they were there? Don’t they have a hand truck for the boxes anyway?
movers. pfft. I hope they got an earful.
it’s alright, Cicero compensated me with a bottle of Jameson’s.
oh, a prediction?
Uh.
Lamont 97% Lieberman 2% McKinney 1%. She’s not even on all the ballots.
Can she contest the election because they did that?
i would.
But it will be too late. The damage will have already been done.
Update from Cynthia McKinney:
Hmmm. Doesn’t sound like a widespread problem, or even a problem at all, now….
