I’m guess I’m mostly inclined toward classic rock, but I’m pretty open to all kinds of music.
Some music, mostly jazz, I really like when I hear live, but don’t particularly like in recordings. Unfortunately I don’t get out to hear it much anymore.
I like classical a lot, but it’s not what I listen to on the radio. My least favorite is rap or hip hop, but that’s because I’m attracted to melody rather than words. I’m really bad with names of songs and knowing who recorded it. I just know what I like when I hear it.
When someone asks you if you like a new song, and you aren’t sure you know what song they are talking about and you say “how does it go?” do you want them to tell you the words or hum it?
I usually ask them to play it for me (since I’m at my computer a lot, it’s not that difficult 🙂 ). However, I don’t really keep up with much music these days, as the great majority of it is crap.
For studying purposes, I used to be able to study to anything in high school – I’d be singing the lyrics as I was flipping through my notes. However, since I’ve hit college, I lost that ability. Therefore, I usually listen to instrumental music (some Hawaiian, some Latino), along with soundtracks.
I’m always amazed how many people start reciting lyrics at me when I ask how a song goes. I’m lucky if I know a song’s lyrics after 10 years. 🙂
I’ve found it interesting to see who falls into the lyrics category and who falls into the music category. I think they are distinct ways of thinking.
I’m looking at my top rated songs on itunes and here’s a sample of who’s in there: Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, The B-52’s, Billy Joel, Bobby Darin, Bruce, Carole King, Don Henley, Ella Fitzgerald, Elton John, Frank Sinatra, Gladys Knight, Indigo Girls, Janis Joplin, Patsy Cline, Sarah McLauglin, Tina Turner. It’s kind of all over the board. And I don’t rate my instrumental music.
The secret to a Billy Joel concert is to get seats behind the stage. Everybody thinks they’ll be terrible, but you’re right on top of him and he plays to you as much as to the front audience.
He hasn’t written anything new in years, but he still gives great concerts. I’ve seen him, I don’t know, at least 5 times. Maybe more. I saw him with Elton John when they played a stadium concert here, and I was in the 12th row. (Which I usually don’t like, cuz I hate standing the whole time. But that concert was OK).
I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s so I am a classic rock fan. I also love David Bowie and the Talking Heads. I’ve gotten a bit into alternative rock, thanks to my kid, and I still harbor a soft spot for Punk.
I think I like words more than music, but music is very important too. Sometimes, I like a song just for its melody, but a song with good words and a great melody will follow me through life.
There are very few songs where I connect the words and music together. It might be the greatest lyrics in the world, but I find it hard to understand the singers sometimes.
I’m probably more of a music person, but I’m well aware of the words as well. One reason I don’t like most of today’s music is that the lyrics are meaningless.
Well, you can sometimes get the general gist of a song with their lyrics. But other times, I can’t figure out just what they mean.
But your interpretation is probably more accurate. Most pop music is about relationships or girls, sometimes in a demeaning fashion. Music should be able to tell some kind of story or have a message…but oftentimes, they don’t nowadays.
Popular music has always been predominantly about relationships. Most classical vocal music is about relationships. And most of it has been complete crap and doesn’t last.
I went to college during a weird musical time. We had disco (ugh) and what is now classic rock AND punk was just coming in. Most of the music was crap. But some of it lasted.
I’ll readily admit I like Coldplay, even though I think their lyrics are shitastic. Why? Well, they are very good musically, and it’s a different pace than the fast-paced rock that I usually listen to.
But then you get someone like Pink with “Dear, Mr. President” or the Dixie Chicks not apologizing for their toughts, and many other songs I am forgetting, and you realize that this gen is not all fluff. :>)
There is a lot of crud pop that is solely hot chick meets hot dude, but there is still some good music coming out today and some of the older bands continue to produce good music with meaningful lyrics.
But I am ready to go to bed now. Very tired at the moment and can’t think straight. My mind is now on the Michigan Governor’s race after seeing Chris’s Labor Day diary and learning recently that the Jennifer Granholm is running against DeVos (son of Amway founder Richard DeVos and member of the CNP. I am a busy woman but I hope one of you diaries on this topic. This is very important because Michigan’s economy is really hurting Jennifer Granholm, not Bush. I have been concentrating on Ohio’s races and Michigan was just not on my radar screen.
It’s not that this time. I had just fallen asleep when my nephew decided to come in an say good night. He’s 3 y.o. so I said good night and now I’m awake.
The old geezers learn to get by on just a little sleep. 🙂
I remember all their classics, but one that didn’t make it big I’ll always remember was called Duncan. I actually remember some of the words to that one.
At first I thought I’d never heard it, but then the flute part of the accompaniment started and I knew it. I don’t think I’ve heard it very often though.
I’ve been fight with an old computer today to get linux installed. I started the installation at 10:00 am and let it run until about 9:00 pm. It still didn’t take.
Tomorrow I’m reformatting the had drive and seeing if that works.
No, it’s the first computer I ever bought. It’s a 233 Mhz with 128 meg ram. I got the Umbutu disk and just started install. The only reason I’m putting linux on it is that it has windows 95 on it. With that version I can’t connect to the internet through my wireless. I’ve got it hooked up straight to the wireless. If I boot of the disk I can access it, but it so damn slow.
just stopped into the weekend cafe diary, thanks for all the pics and well-wishes for my bday. Wish I could’ve stopped in but was away doing family stuff. Hope your Labor Day weekend was relaxing.
things are getting better, lots of drama but it seems to be passing. I actually had a good day yesterday with my family. We barbequed and relaxed until the wee hours of the morning. How was your w/e?
never ends, you’ll be joining it again soon enough.
I’m off to bed, my boss returns to work tomorrow after being gone for 8 working days. I can’t wait! Being in charge is not as fun as one imagines. Goodnight everybody!
I know, I never got within five feet of a computer for most of the weekend. Lots of family stuff to deal with so The Big Day™ was an afterthought until the waves settled down. But. I’m here now, and so are you! Aren’t you getting ready for a big trip?
I’m sure that Family Man can arrange a do-over for your birthday on Thursday when you can actually enjoy it. Or maybe you just want to forget all about it now that you’re — 26. <sigh>
You know … I was just telling Psi last night that he should live it up now. Because once you get past your 25th year … really, it’s all over. 🙂
the Italy trip was nearing, perhaps I can stow myself away in one of your bags. You don’t need shoes anyways, you’ll have plenty of options to buy news ones there. Right? Right?!? 😉
21 was fun, 22 was the beginning of the end, 25 was a blur (katrina dominated my brain last year) and 26…well, lets just say that I’m lookin’ forward to devising new ways to get myself in trouble O:)
I’m gonna have to catch up on my reading. My interest is definitely piqued. Although I have to say, toe nail polish is much more interesting and exciting to be associated with than manatees.
it was a busy weekend, but now I’m relaxing on my porch with a beer listening to the rain. It’s just this side of perfect. Gearing up for the big return to the semester? The stores were slammed here in Tucson with all the returning students getting last minute stuff for their apts. and dorms, from what the news is saying.
Yeah…classes start on Wednesday, which is officially tomorrow. I’m going to be very busy tomorrow – have to run out and get textbooks, do a fantasy football draft (I would automate it if I knew how), go work at the bank, and make it down to the Drinking Liberally in Philly for a little bit. Somewhere in there, I need to review a little Japanese.
is that all? 😉 I’ve been out of school for over three years now and can honestly say that I’m not ready to go back yet. It’ll happen eventually, but I’m trying to save up money working fulltime. I managed to get out of my undergrad without any debt due to scholarships but grad school will be a whole other monster. Plus, I have no idea what I want to do when I grow up 🙂
I’m sorry I missed your birthday, but I didn’t know about it … must be one of those national security secrets eh? (Kind of like mine, which passed surreptitiously back at the end of July, hehe.)
Sounds like you’re über busy as usual, as am I, except for this past weekend, which was a total slacktastic laze fest. Of course I feel guilty for not getting a lot of things done, but my motivation flew away and aside from doing laundry and some cooking, nada pasó.
Hope your week goes well, and happy happy once again, you old geezer you! 🙂
Well, I went to the poetry open mic, not well-attended because of the holiday but fun all the same. And I did fine-I have left my former shyness far behind. Yay! I win over the forces of evil!
A couple of hours left in the last weekend of summer. Enjoy.
So…who’s still around?
I am, but I can’t stay up as late I did last night. I have to work tomorrow.
🙁
So…shall I choose a topic to chat about, Mary? 😛
You’re a fast learner 🙂
sure, what’s tonight’s topic?
Sorry for being absent – I have to be at the bank tomorrow, and I’m trying to brush up on everything I need to know.
So…topic of conversation, eh? What kind of music do you like? Personally, I’m mostly inclined towards classic rock, punk rock, and metal.
I’m guess I’m mostly inclined toward classic rock, but I’m pretty open to all kinds of music.
Some music, mostly jazz, I really like when I hear live, but don’t particularly like in recordings. Unfortunately I don’t get out to hear it much anymore.

I love Billy Joel. Went to a concert at MSG this February…had the time of my life.
Maybe more. I went to Bowie’s Diamond Dogs concert. It was a great time.
So … are you a “words” person or a “music” person?
I think I like words more than music, but music is very important too. Sometimes, I like a song just for its melody, but a song with good words and a great melody will follow me through life.
There are very few songs where I connect the words and music together. It might be the greatest lyrics in the world, but I find it hard to understand the singers sometimes.

Psi are you sure you really aren’t in your 70’s? 😛
How can the lyrics be meaningless? I could understand if you didn’t agree with their meaning. But how can they be meaningless?
Well, you can sometimes get the general gist of a song with their lyrics. But other times, I can’t figure out just what they mean.

I went to college during a weird musical time. We had disco (ugh) and what is now classic rock AND punk was just coming in. Most of the music was crap. But some of it lasted.
So there must be at least ONE song you like?
Well, clearly, since I like any music at all. Are you talking about modern-day music or classic rock?
modern day — something you hear around the dorm because somebody is always playing it. At top volume. And you don’t want to like it. But you do.
I’ll readily admit I like Coldplay, even though I think their lyrics are shitastic. Why? Well, they are very good musically, and it’s a different pace than the fast-paced rock that I usually listen to.
Coldplay is a great example of a good modern band, if a bit shallow in the lyrics department. Even great rock has it’s “Whole Lotta Love” songs. :>)
thank goodness, we have achieved revelation tonight.
I won’t be around for a few weeks, so you’ll have plenty of time to think up a new topic. I’ll be back to mostly sunday nights when I get back.
You’re leaving! 🙁
Oh well. Where to?
But then you get someone like Pink with “Dear, Mr. President” or the Dixie Chicks not apologizing for their toughts, and many other songs I am forgetting, and you realize that this gen is not all fluff. :>)
I love Green Day too. Good lirics, good melodies.
Argh…toughts = thoughts.
There is a lot of crud pop that is solely hot chick meets hot dude, but there is still some good music coming out today and some of the older bands continue to produce good music with meaningful lyrics.
But I am ready to go to bed now. Very tired at the moment and can’t think straight. I’m glad you stopped in before going to bed. Maybe someone from Michigan will diary this topic. We have a lot of Michigan folk around here.
Don’t you people ever go to bed?
um … it’s only 10:30. Even where you are 🙂
That’s what I’m talking about. You night owls. 🙂
I’m sorry your back is hurting 🙁
It’s not that this time. I had just fallen asleep when my nephew decided to come in an say good night. He’s 3 y.o. so I said good night and now I’m awake.
The old geezers learn to get by on just a little sleep. 🙂
damn kid!
Nah he’s a good kid. Can’t get mad at a 3 y.o. for wanting to say goodnight. 🙂
I think FM got disturbed at the thought that I might be up later than he would be. 😛
I think he fell back asleep. Or maybe he’s looking at his itunes to tell us what he has on it 🙂
Nah, actually Mary I’m like you in the music. I listen more to the melody. There are songs I still love, I don’t know the words to.
As long as I looked it I decided to play my top rated. I’m wondering why I don’t do this more often.
Right now It’s Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard. I haven’t heard that in a while.
I remember all their classics, but one that didn’t make it big I’ll always remember was called Duncan. I actually remember some of the words to that one.
I’d ask you how it goes, but you can’t hum it for me 🙂 I’ll google it.
It’s Duncan or Nathan Duncan. Never could remember that.
At first I thought I’d never heard it, but then the flute part of the accompaniment started and I knew it. I don’t think I’ve heard it very often though.
When I was in college we used to go to a bar that had that playing all the time. It got burned into my brain. 🙂
Are you kidding. I figure someone who complains about carrying a couple of bags of groceries a few steps, I can outlast. 😛
I think I outlasted both of you tonight.
No Mary I’m awake. You two will probably be long gone while I’m still up.
But poor Psi. It must be nappy time. 🙂
Nope, still here! Just had to reboot the computer a couple of times to sort out some BIOS settings.
So there! 😛
I’ve been fight with an old computer today to get linux installed. I started the installation at 10:00 am and let it run until about 9:00 pm. It still didn’t take.
Tomorrow I’m reformatting the had drive and seeing if that works.
Damn…that’s pretty long. Were you trying to go for a dual-boot system?
No, it’s the first computer I ever bought. It’s a 233 Mhz with 128 meg ram. I got the Umbutu disk and just started install. The only reason I’m putting linux on it is that it has windows 95 on it. With that version I can’t connect to the internet through my wireless. I’ve got it hooked up straight to the wireless. If I boot of the disk I can access it, but it so damn slow.
So tomorrow I’ll reformat and try install again.
Damn, that is an old computer. Those were all the rage…about 10 years ago or so. 🙂
And that’s about how long ago I bought it.
My how time flies.
just stopped into the weekend cafe diary, thanks for all the pics and well-wishes for my bday. Wish I could’ve stopped in but was away doing family stuff. Hope your Labor Day weekend was relaxing.
Hi Manny. Hope everything is going well with you.
things are getting better, lots of drama but it seems to be passing. I actually had a good day yesterday with my family. We barbequed and relaxed until the wee hours of the morning. How was your w/e?
That’s good to hear Manny.
My w/e, need you ask – slackerly. 🙂
Hey Manee!!! Happy Belated B-Day!!!
always good to see you around the cafe. Hope you had a great weekend!
Hey, your welcome. What was it, the big 2-oh? :>)
My weekend was mellow, but only because I messed up my knee and learned on Friday that I have to have surgery.
I trust yours was much nicer!
sorry to hear about the knee, I hope the surgery restores you to brand new! Keep us posted on your progress.
I turned the big two-six this year, but found myself definitely saying “oh…” a few times while pondering it 🙂
Two-six? Manny your an old man. 🙂
two-six is just a great time. Old enough to know better and young enough not to care!
I’m terrified of surgery, but I am sure I will be up and dancing in no time. :>)
never ends, you’ll be joining it again soon enough.
I’m off to bed, my boss returns to work tomorrow after being gone for 8 working days. I can’t wait! Being in charge is not as fun as one imagines. Goodnight everybody!
Night Manny.
Sleep well. Hope to catch you on the flip side. :>)
Everyone was worried because you missed your own party. I hope you had a good birthday wherever you were?
I know, I never got within five feet of a computer for most of the weekend. Lots of family stuff to deal with so The Big Day™ was an afterthought until the waves settled down. But. I’m here now, and so are you! Aren’t you getting ready for a big trip?

I leave on Thursday for Italy.
I would love to do the do-over, but I won’t be around Thursday.
Actually I’m beginning to look at it as once you get past 55 it’s all over. The years keeps extending out for some reason.
the Italy trip was nearing, perhaps I can stow myself away in one of your bags.
Stop with the Italian shoes ! 😉
Since I’m not taking a steamer trunk full of shoes — I don’t think taking out my shoes would allow enough room for you in my luggage 🙁
And, frankly, my family might think it was a little strange if you were in my luggage 😉
But I’ll think of you whenever I put on my shoes, cuz if you read the other cafes you’ll know that I have special Manny toe polish on. 🙂
I’m gonna have to catch up on my reading. My interest is definitely piqued. Although I have to say, toe nail polish is much more interesting and exciting to be associated with than manatees.
that skippy …
g’night, see you in a few weeks.
Hey Manny! Hope you enjoyed your birthday. Good to hear your weekend was pretty good.
it was a busy weekend, but now I’m relaxing on my porch with a beer listening to the rain. It’s just this side of perfect. Gearing up for the big return to the semester? I’m going to give sleep another try.
Everyone have a good night and a good day at work tomorrow.
me too, g’night all.
Me too.
But at least I made it a few more minutes than FM! That’s all that really matters. 😀
Well, I went to the poetry open mic, not well-attended because of the holiday but fun all the same. And I did fine-I have left my former shyness far behind. Yay! I win over the forces of evil!
