Here is the way I see it on the blogrolling crap. I know BooMan does not agree.
- It doesn’t cost Kos shit to keep old friends on his site (MLW/BMT/Skippy — others).
- Leads me to believe that the exclusion is either personal or professional. My guess professional, because we are the fucking rabble, right?
- It has an impact on MLW/BMT/Skippy in terms of search stats and such things I don’t understand.
- There’s not fucking way in the world I should be helping his site stats by reading that crap, let alone contributing an iota of shit there, other than to help him pull his head out of his ass on this issue.
I’m not cross-posting this because I’m home on lunch and I’m banking my diary for later if needed. But here is a comment for some fucking centrist there in Kos’ thread bragging about his ability to highlight other more helpful blogs (more power to them by the way).
I truly hope all those kossacks (6+ / 0-)
who are complaining that kos’s new blogroll doesn’t cater to their own needs will come around.
I believe a large number of kossacks don’t get it yet, that dkos is not a chatroom for lonely lefties but an active site for Democratic activators and activists whose primary purpose is to elect progressive Democrats.
I feel like I should add a kitten.jpg to this.

I am (0 / 0)one of those “lonely lefties” pal.
Daily Kos is lots of things to lots of people.
But I’m pissed off for people I consider friends who were dropped from the blogroll. I bear no grudge against Kos promoting these other sites — happy they are doing well and kicking ass and taking names.
But no one has really answered one question of mine? How much time/money did it cost Kos to keep the Booman Tribune, My Left Wing and Skippy on the fucking blogroll? Was he out of space? Does it cost him extra for the link?
My guess is that it costs him nothing to keep them. It took him time to remove them.
He removed them because he doesn’t read them? Okay. So Kos links only to what he reads. That is a big fucking thank you to a number of bloggers who have worked pretty hard here to contribute idea/thoughts/content/etc. (I don’t count myself in the group of fine contributors — but I do count those other bloggers and FPs at other blogs that always cross-post here, IMHO to the betterment of the DailyKos Community) That is a fine fucking friend. (I know — it’s not all about friends — it’s all about being “Democratic activators and activists whose primary purpose is to elect progressive Democrats” — forget about actual progressive grass roots individuals who contribute to your damn site).
Post a fucking kitten. And enjoy your new majority. It really looks like it might get some stuff done — like starting a new campaign for fucking ’08 in ’06. It is all about electoral politics — all the time.
I thought a part of being a good electoral politician was knowing how not to piss down your friends backs. Just tell ’em it is raining I guess.

I think I understand BooMan’s position, and that he is not in any way supportive of my going on tilt on this issue. Still, I don’t give a shit. Don’t stick a freaking shiv in a friend — I think is my point — when it isn’t pretty freaking necessary.
BooMan. I’ll not be around here long enough today to take this down, which I’d be happy to do at your request. But I wanted to update my thoughts in this issue in a continuing way here. Since I’ll be out, please feel free to strike it yourself — no hard feelings on my part. This is bullshit though.
“Don’t stick a freaking shiv in a friend — I think is my point — when it isn’t pretty freaking necessary.”
I`d like to think it shouldn`t ever be even considered, but it does always seem more “evil” when it involves a “friend”.
“a good electoral politician was knowing how not to piss down your friends backs. Just tell ’em it is raining I guess.”
I think the lot of them good use a good meta diary on being politicians!
Small minded, petty and no class seems to come to mind. Hey with friends like that who the hell needs enemies.
I can understand, but don’t agree with, kos dropping the sites on which he gets bashed. Most troubling is dropping Kid O from the Alumni roster.
I completely left him out. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Stunning really. To me, these writers represent a whopping percentage of what I ever liked about the freaking site.
Huh?!!
I believe a large number of kossacks don’t get it yet, that dkos is not a chatroom for lonely lefties but an active site for Democratic activators and activists whose primary purpose is to elect progressive Democrats.
Electing progressive democrats? You mean like Jim Webb?
Well sure, provided you understand that by “progressive”, Kos means FDR and nothing after. Women and minorities and the general weirdo rabble need not apply for entry into the white male working class paradise.
Not Boston Not Joe Not Blogging-
I have no problem with you making this argument. It’s wrong to say that I am in no way supportive of it. I disagree with your argument in significant part, but not entirely.
You’re free to make your argument and I’ll tell you what I think of it.
Well — that is sure as hell something I’ve always appreciated here — the ability to say what you think.
I just didn’t want to drag this crap out and run, so I wanted to post my permission for you to pull it off if it was in bad taste of out of line. Honestly, you’ve been such a good host for these years, I could almost forgive you censorship and would certainly respect your wishes. The only time I ever remember you warning me was when I was a prick to a local candidate, and that wasn’t entirely undeserving on my part.
Also, I didn’t mean to put words in your mouth. Just thinking out blog.
If I could put words in your mouth, I would probably use MSOC as a model for your character, only make her more masculine, with a beard. And more quiet. With out all the fuckings. And then I’d have you say: “God dammit Kos, this blows. I’m not going to take it lying down. Guns or knives, Butch.”
I just knew I was going to be out a long time and didn’t want my words twisting without you having ability to take them down as might be required. Thanks for the leeway to flip completely fucking out in public.
BJ-
at this point my skin is as thick as elephant hide. Don’t worry about it. I’m working on a diary that will offend midgets. I haven’t ever done one of those and I feel like I’ve left an empty space in my niche of the universe. Seriously, because I was joking if you couldn’t tell, I’ve had a good run of getting beat up and it hasn’t done much more than make me a little more tired…want an extra hour of sleep…you know what I mean?
Post away. I’m guessing your spouse is out of town or something and your not-blogging to your heart content? Either way, I didn’t see you blogging. I know nothing.
Well — between you and I, let’s just say she hasn’t been the happiest camper with my temporary return to blogging. We always have to stretch our boundaries though. Huh?
I’m not sure I can spot humor at this point — I’m glad you highlighted it for me. I’m trying to chill a little.
Thick skin. It’s good for the javelin catch event, too.
I don’t have much to add to the debate from yesterday and last night, but I certainly agree with you.
It would feel fairer if Kos had been more systematic. Instead, for example, he left links to Steve Gilliard and Steve Soto under the “Kos Alumni” part of the blogroll. If I were Skippy or MaryScott or BooMan, I’d sure feel stabbed in the back.
I like your putdown to that insufferable twit. DKos must certainly be the world capital of smug.
who hasn’t got the cojones to sit at the table:
Take a deep breath, sit out a few hands, and get your bearings back.
That’s all I’ve got for now — I’m still pissed at the report that the Edwards campaign may have fired the two bloggers that the Catholic League was bitching about (only report is an unreliable Salon source), and the reaction from the group over there is “no big deal” if it’s true.
I’m still going to YearlyKos (hell, I’m already paid, my plane reservations are non-refundable and I’m not sure I want to spend 5 days in Chicago by my lonesome), and I’ll still help out in a few areas (like the Tag Cleanup Project just because I’m anal enough to care). Might once again have to reconsider where I spend my energies…
I’ve spent a few minutes at the tables. I know what tilt feels like. This is it. But sometimes, you gotta double up the bet. Keep pressing. Get out of the hole.
And sometimes you catch a heater.
Kos is now a brand and he’s protecting it. He’s Disneyland for party activists with everything that implies.
BTW, get your modifiers in the correct place. It ain’t the kitten’s fault.
everyone from his blogroll – and from his site – who doesn’t fit his narrow criteria of acceptability.
As in Orwell’s 1984, what he and his management team says means the exact opposite. The “Big Tent” is, in fact, a tent that’s getting smaller all the time.
I’m not sure why he’s doing this – as BostonJoe says, it requires time and effort, and he’s alienating perfectly sound progressives who donate money and volunteer time – but it’s obviously a conscious choice.
Yes, it could be because he doesn’t want to link to truly progressive blogs.
But as I suggested in yesterday’s discussion, I find it interesting that he links to only one Scoop site, and that one is formatted completely differently. BT and European Tribune, in contrast, are set up almost exactly the same way as dKos. So someone familiar with dKos would be instantly very comfortable at BT or ET. If these were linked to at dKos, visitors their could easily find out that dKos isn’t the only game in town.
I think he’s afraid of competition. He is following the strategy of PNAC: while you are at the top, prevent any competitors from emerging.
This is an excellent point.
Past history supports your assertion.
I’m one of the “women’s studies set” who were basically told by a gang of conveniently clueless misogynists to sit down, shut up, and move to the back of the bus. Pleas for more inclusive language, less blatant sexism, even a tacit tip of the hat to issues of importance to women were met with jeering, profanity, and a level of nastiness worthy of the most chauvinistic conservative Republican.
Kos seems to be more interested in courting disaffected Republicans than airing the concerns of the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party. We need to STFU because we’re too embarassingly liberal.
I shudder every time I see Dailykos referred to as a “progressive” blog. How many light years to the right do you have to be to consider Kos progressive ?
I was wondering where all the feminists who left went. I missed the greater part of the Pie Wars because I was out of town, but saw some of the salient points – the fratboys accusing feminists of being frigid and hating sex because they dared to criticize the pie ad, etc. It was brutal.
It’s a good thing I wasn’t there for the whole thing, or there would have been even more blood on the floor. And I’m sure I would have left with the rest of you.
That was the point at which I realized that there were serious problems with the site and we weren’t all on the same page.
FYI, since then, I’ve been doing my best to support the cause of feminism over there – I started a weekly series of feminist diaries, have been a feminist thorn-in-their-side in every discussion topic that related to feminism, and told off the FPers because none of them saw fit to attend – or even mention – the “feminism panel” at Yearly Kos. I suspect that this is the main reason I got targeted for abuse and eventually banned.
Have you read Tanya Melich’s book, The Republican War Against Women? It details the Reagan-era change in focus of the Republican party leadership and their conscious decision to throw feminists under the bus in order to appeal to the religious right. There were quite a few feminist, pro-choice Republicans in the party leadership, but they were all sidelined and silenced. What concerns me is that it appears as though the Democratic Party is going the same way.
I used to look for you over there, hrh. You were a voice of sanity in the sea of testosterone.
Yes, I see frightening parallels to Tanya Melich’s chronicle. Even from a purely srategic perspective, this is a fatal error for Democrats. We want all those single young women to vote, but do we hear one word about the issues that effect their lives every day? What Democratic candidate is talking about universal childcare? Comparable worth? Child support enforcement? Which candidate promises that single payer health care will guarentee that any women can walk into her local hospital and get an abortion as easily as an appendectomy ?
They would rather roll their eyes skyward and sigh soulfully about their “faith”.
There was a poster whose sig line was something like: “Let’s defeat the Republicans by electing our own…Republicans.” I assume that poster is also banned, since I haven’t seen the sig for quite a while.
Thanks, susanw – LOVE “a voice of sanity in a sea of testosterone” – I’m borrowing it for the Supervixens motto 🙂 Come by Supervixens and say hi!
I’ve been in touch with Melich. Apparently since the book, she was an advisor of some kind to the Kerry campaign. I’d like to talk to her about the Dems and the parallels between the current Dem party and the Reagan-era Repubs. If there is anything at all to be done about it, my sense is that it needs to be done NOW.
