Stunning new proof that the Planet of the Apes is a true story.
Chimpanzees living in the West African savannah have been observed fashioning deadly spears from sticks and using the tools to hunt small mammals — the first routine production of deadly weapons ever observed in animals other than humans.
The multistep spearmaking practice, documented by researchers in Senegal who spent years gaining the chimpanzees’ trust, adds credence to the idea that human forebears fashioned similar tools millions of years ago.
The landmark observation also supports the long-debated proposition that females — the main makers and users of spears among the Senegalese chimps — tend to be the innovators and creative problem solvers in primate culture.
Using their hands and teeth, the chimpanzees were repeatedly seen tearing the side branches off long, straight sticks, peeling back the bark and sharpening one end. Then, grasping the weapons in a “power grip,” they jabbed them into tree-branch hollows where bush babies — small, monkeylike mammals — sleep during the day.
In one case, after repeated stabs, a chimpanzee removed the injured or dead animal and ate it, the researchers reported in yesterday’s online issue of the journal Current Biology.
“It was really alarming how forceful it was,” said lead researcher Jill D. Pruetz of Iowa State University, adding that it reminded her of the murderous shower scene in the Alfred Hitchcock movie “Psycho.” “It was kind of scary.”
The new observations are “stunning,” said Craig Stanford, a primatologist and professor of anthropology at the University of Southern California. “Really fashioning a weapon to get food — I’d say that’s a first for any nonhuman animal.”
Scientists have documented tool use among chimpanzees for decades, but the tools have been simple and used to extract food rather than to kill it.
Oh, and does this lend credence to that whole Adam and Eve story?
…females — the main makers and users of spears among the Senegalese chimps — tend to be the innovators and creative problem solvers in primate culture.
It wasn’t a pear or apple from the tree of knowledge, but a spear?
Just kidding ladies. Seems like some good weekend reading…
This was the most shocking news story I read this morning and I’ve been thinking about it all day. Did chimps learn this behavior by watching humans — monkey see, monkey do? Have they “evolved” during historical time? Or have they always known how to hunt but weren’t observed before? And the females being the hunters just blows every stereotype, doesn’t it?
is a book that’s been out there for a while, but I guess these scientists don’t read much history. Not news!
have to do with it? har. Seriously, females being inventive is not news. But female chimps making spears and hunting for their own raw meat is news. It blows the whole scenario of males=single focus hunters-protectors/females = multi-tasking gatherer-nurturers. And chimps — of either gender — making spears to kill is big news! Now, when they find the chimps’ cave drawings, we’re gonna have to give them the right to vote! 😉
One of them is already POTUS…
Perfect, Melanchthon. I almost choked on my pretzel there.
The ability to make spears is culteral, not genetic. That has to be why it is limited to such a small group.
The cave paintings will come when they fit into the culture.
Culture existed before language. The ability to speak offered the opportunity for culture to suddenly blossom and take over the whole group.
Did this lead to the sudden expansion of the human brain? Did that expansion of the brain and language between them lead to greater culture?
Possible. No one yet knows what caused the rapid expansion of the human brain. Such an interaction of culture and language might explain it.
I’m not surprised. What do you expect from Bush’s distant relatives?!!
no.
Have any other suggestions on how to get him impeached?
maybe he could commit some heinous crimes against humanity, costing hundreds of thousands of lives and derailing centuries of human progress? under the guidance of his god?
would that make a difference?
Booman,
You were doing fine until you chickened out in the last line.
So the spear-wielding Valkyries come swinging down from the trees singing like Tarzan… in a brass brassier?
After the performance of the Ring Cycle in Seattle, where the Valkyries bounced on trampolines while singing at the top of their lungs, I guess long hairy arms brachiating across the stage will be acceptable production concepts.
with trampolines?
I can’t decide if Wagner is applauding or turning over in his grave.
I’ve known this, all along:

had the mantra “The female of the species is more deadly than the male!”
