Geez if I was getting sleepy, that picture woke me right up. 🙂

So the weekend is almost here.  Do you have any big plan?

      • CabinGirl
CabinGirl on July 6, 2007 at 7:53 am

Not really.  I’d like to go for a bike ride with the kids, I need to do a little work so I can get caught up on my work projects before my vacation at the end of the month, and I have some furniture that needs to be moved to storage. Oh, and some fireworks would be nice.

Big excitement, huh?  Are you having company?

        • Family Man
Family Man on July 6, 2007 at 8:04 am

Yep on the company.  It never ends here.  They called yesterday morning and said they would be in that day.  Hence the cleaning of the house, but they didn’t show, so it’s like I tell FMom.  Don’t listen to what they said about schedules, they show up when they show up.

I’d say your weekend is packed full of fun filled events compared to my weekend.  But then again, I have to live up to the title of Southern Sage of Slothful Slacking. 🙂

So are they coming today, or just coming another weekend?

What I really want to do this weekend is break out my kayak, but I think that will have to wait until mext week.

With these relatives you never know.  Like I said, when they show up, they show up.  As far as the staying, it just depends on when their next doctor’s appointment is.

I’ve never been kayaking, but I think I would like it.  Any sport where you can sit down while doing it seems OK in my book. 🙂

          • Second Nature
Second Nature on July 6, 2007 at 8:54 am

Nope, no plans.  It’s hot and I’m kind of on a cooking strike and no one is ever home for dinner anyway.  I really should clean up around the house but I’m feeling lazy.  I sort of wish company was coming so I’d have the motivation to clean the house.

          • Family Man
Family Man on July 6, 2007 at 9:01 am

On a cooking strike?  Get your son and d-i-l to come over and starting cooking for you.  Show them the vacation is over. 🙂

Actually it wasn’t the company coming that got me to cleaning last night.  I figured instead of tossing and turning all night, I’d do something productive and maybe get tired enough to go to sleep.  Didn’t work. 🙁

CabinGirl on July 6, 2007 at 9:11 am

I’ve been on a bit of a cooking strike lately too.  I finally got some cookbooks at the library to get me out of my slump.  Oh, nad to figure out some way to use up all the vegetables from our CSA farm membership.  We practically had bok choy coming out our noses for a few weeks…

Last night we had grilled cherry-marinated lamb for dinner.

I’m jusat finishing packing up for a weekend in the woods.  Yippee!  I love sitting by the fire, eating off the grill, drinking cold beer and watching the stars.  The park has a  huge telescope and planetarium.  This weekend is amateur night, so lots of people will come with their owen telescopes and show us non-star folk planets and galaxies and such.  I can’t wait.

It will be so nice to have just a few days to kick back and get away from the computer!  Have a great weekend all.

      • Kamakhya
Kamakhya on July 8, 2007 at 9:07 pm

Camping is so my happy place too.  It was a great trip.  We were all feeling a bit lazy and the sun was way too hot, but we had a really shady spot.  I read for hours, I drank cold beer, I got my fire fix with good grilling, and I got to see four moons of Jupiter, the rings of Saturn and a globular cluster (which was very cool).  I left with the tired kids before they started on the galaxies, but we had a great time giggling ’round the fire anyway.

I wish I could have captured the intense green of the trees and the blue of the sky on my camera.  I could just hear the trees sing.

I think you’re up early enough — it’s more a question of getting moving. You need dogs that are bigger pests.

I just got back from a bike ride. It’s hot and I had a flat tire. I think the dogs cut a deal with the powers-that-be to punish me for not going for a walk.

She is back to normal now and thanks for asking. Seems to have been a flu of some sort. I’ve been hearing complaints of the same symptoms of varying degree from others. It appears I’ve escaped, at least for now;-)

Is your lake losing much water due to the drought? My brother’s well used to dry up about Aug. every year here. They finally got municipal water a few years ago, so don’t have that hassle anymore.

          • Family Man
Family Man on July 7, 2007 at 9:06 am

I’m glad to hear she’s feeling better.

Yep the pond is already starting to shrink some.  If we continue to get no rain, it will be pretty much diminished by the last of August.

When I was a kid, we had well water, but I don’t remember it drying completely up on us.  I do remember during the summers, getting some water that had sand in it though.

          • Indianadem
Indianadem on July 7, 2007 at 9:20 am

When our kids were at home, we lived out on the edge of a large state forest not far from where we are now. Our water came from a farm pond and for years, the only filter we had was a bed of gravel the water seeped through to a shallow well we had next to the pond. When summer came and the vegetation in the water began to break down, hooeee did that water take on an interesting sulfurous odor! Luckily, none of us ever had a problem with bacteria in our systems from it.

Hey, I got the new Cowboy Junkies and Joan Osborne cds yesterday. Both are fantastic. The Osborne album is a a mix of old soul songs and new songs she wrote that reflect her take on soul music. All the new songs are very good but it’s the emotional content she brings to the older songs that really got to me. Her version of Ain’t No Sunshine literally gave me the shivers and her Heat Wave was no raucous it even made Sniff dance.

        • CabinGirl
CabinGirl on July 8, 2007 at 12:39 pm

More normal water levels in the river/waterfall in the center of town.  Currently, the rocky formation on the right is under water and the embankment on the opposite side is reinforced with sandbags to protect the road behind it (see first image in series linked above – before sandbags were added – also #19).

I don’t mind the way food taste with coffee, I think with me it’s just waking up to know I’m eating.

Sorry you’re up so early but it’s good timing — I was just checking back in before I head off for my morning walk.

Hope you’re day goes smoother than your early waking.

          See ya later.

Yeah, it’s already steamy here too.  I think an afternoon trip to the pool is going to be in order (I doubt I could get anybody to do much else).

My dogs don’t even want to go out.

Just writing, writing, and oh, more writing.

CBtY has camp today, so I’ll be running him over there shortly.

          How about you?

With the rain we got the other day, I hate to say it, but I think I need to do the lawn again.  They’re predicting 60% of rain today, so if I can hold out long enough, I might get out of it.

          • CabinGirl
CabinGirl on July 9, 2007 at 7:32 am

Our mower is in the shop till the end of the week, so we’ll be fertilizing the lawn while it’s gone.  It’ll probably take a double mowing to get things under control by the time the mower gets back…poor CBtE.

Family Man on July 9, 2007 at 7:35 am

Fertilizing the lawn is something I would never do.  I’m trying to get it to stop growing.

I saw this while looking around the news.  I hope they don’t do that here.

It seems like a lot of folks are having trouble sleeping this week.

We’re fine, looking forward to going to the beach at the end of the month.

How are you?  Vacation time over already?

Wish wasn’t too bad since there was a holiday midweek.

Now’s the hard part — going till April without vacation.  I was in California a couple of weeks ago and drove by a couple of beaches.  But didn’t have time to stop at any.

I’m hoping to go for a longer visit next year.

I’d love to trade; I hate hot weather and would be happy to never see a temp over 75.

I hope you’re getting a break from the rain. Are you back in Oslo now?

ask on July 10, 2007 at 5:25 am

Hot is OK – to some extent, humidity sucks.
Yes, dropped the young ones off to camp on Sunday – then to Oslo.  Mixed day today, even the occasional sighting of the sun.

And since you are in the city, there are bound to be plenty of distractions that don’t depend on good weather.

In the Midwest, there is no such thing as heat w/o humidity. But I don’t like the dry heat out in the Southwest either — it’s still miserable.

          • ask
ask on July 10, 2007 at 5:59 am

Lot’s of distractions, for sure + friends and family.
But I also have some chores to do – such as working through the bureaucracy of the US consular section for a visa renewal.  Heading out to start the process now.

We’re due for the cooler weather here on Thursday.  I hope it happens, because it’s hard to send enough water to camp with CBtY when it’s this hot out.

He’s off to Hershypark today.  I though this was nature camp?

It appeared there were thunderstorms all around, but we got about 30 minutes of sprinkles.  We need a weeks worth of steady rain all over the states, but these scattered showers keep popping up.

A little early.  I got my E4T stuff done a little early, though.  So I have a little time to visit.

I’m glad the heat seems to be breaking in a lot of places.

        It’s only 72 here.

I saw (and replied!!!) I wouldn’t have posted the cholesterol numbers, but they’re unusual so I do it once a year or so.

I’m pretty sure we’ll get up to 90-something too.
