At the end of a large piece on the fate of the CIA’s ghost detainees, Craig Whitlock reports:
Though Nasar would go on trial if he was brought back to Spain, that would be preferable to indefinite detention in a secret prison, Tuero said.
“He’s in a legal limbo,” he said. “The Americans would never give him a fair trial. Spain would.”
I am thrilled to read this kind of stuff. I just love it that America now has a reputation that we ‘would never give…a fair trial.’ That’s awesome. Just fantastic. Thank you, George W. Bush.
The spell has irrevocably been broken. The Bush administration, specifically in the person of Bush himself, has broken the spell the world has been under since the end of the second world war. The U.S. was an invincible super power and god was its foremost patron. It’s all over folks. The world has now understood that they were worshiping false gods and are liberated from their bondage. Slowly, the children are awakening as adults after all these years and realizing that their prolonged childhood was self-inflicted and unhealthy. We still have to await the liberation of the U.S. children from their nationalistic bondage. Spain: hardly thirty years ago under the last gasps of the fascist Franco and now Spain is telling the U.S., the oldest country in the world, how to act!
well said.
the US has very often used ‘enhanced interrogation’ techniques throughout the third world, or relinquished that role to a supervised military junta or local dictator I mean ‘strong man’ and when that failed to quell social unrest and revolutionary movements, the US upped the ante and sent in the massive ‘military aid’ or the marines. this has all been happening overseas as anyone who studies american foreign policy since WWII in detail will well know. chomsky and herman documented it quite well in the writings on the Empire and the terror network with its hub in DC.
the current practices by the cheney adminstration are merely a more extreme and extensive form of this historical aberration, where in guantanamo and the CIA black sites for example the torture is done by US personnel, and in rendition its done by foreign gov’ts in service to the US that the US delivers the poor devils to.
the article makes me wonder if it’s possible for anyone to get a fair trail now in the phony Age of Terrorism (and by the way it’s symptomatic also of the complicity of the ruling elites in all this torture that it has taken the courts 4-5 years or more to even rule on any of these cases; not to mention the lack of any sustained outrage by the congress and the so-called Free Press. and yes, that’s why they were given first amendment protection)
a monstrous state of affairs.
