I don’t know, if McCain had actually vetted her, we would not be paying attention to stuff like this:
Of the 13 people receiving subpoenas, the biggest name is Todd Palin, the governor’s husband. He is a central figure in the legislative investigation into whether the governor or her staff abused their powers in a quest to force the firing of Alaska State Trooper Mike Wooten, who was involved in a nasty divorce from Sarah Palin’s sister.
Tom Van Flein, an Anchorage attorney representing the Palins, said a decision could be made by early this afternoon on whether Todd Palin will testify.
When the potential First Dude is getting subpoenaed less than two months out of a presidential election, you have a problem. No one willingly injects this kind of nonsense into their campaign. Only an idiot would do that willingly.
He should have vetted her.
Either poor vetting or Repugs didn’t much care and thought that they could simply spin their way through this.
The CEO of Cindy’s Hensley beer distribution company had a 10-minute interview with Palin – not enough for two beers – and he gave the nod.
pick a bride in haste, after a 15-minute honeymnoon, you’ll drown your remorse for the rest of your
lifecampaign.I’m glad that he didn’t, myself.

You contradict yourself here a bit, BooMan. By your formulation, there’s one way that she might have been vetted and still made it on the ticket.
I mean, six months ago I wouldn’t have said that John McCain was an idiot. But the evidence is piling up now, isn’t it? It’s beginning to appear like the Palin decision is one of “if he didn’t vet her he’s an idiot, but if he did vet her he’s still an idiot”. Just the very choice confirms the idiocy.
And now he appears to be trying to damage diplomatic relations with Spain. With SPAIN for the love of Grod! Over a gaffe – he can’t admit it was a gaffe so it has to be a deliberate snub. WTF? Let’s flip the bird at a military ally and trading partner instead of owning up to the fact that he didn’t understand the question. If he pulls that crap with our allies, how long after he takes the office does he do something equally stupid with one of our enemies? An accidental war with China over the President’s stupid pride would be oh-so-much-fun, don’t you think?
glad you caught the logical inferences. Idiot either way.
John McCain is an idiot, pure and simple. Just look at his voting record versus his promises, his amazing trail of flip-flops, his inexplicable choice of the lamentable Sarah whose hypocrisy is matched only by her vindictiveness and ability to mislead. And, now, the entire Republican party is tied to this pair of incompetents. I never thought I would see this day.
Go, Obama, go, go, go!
My theory is that the reason McCain didn’t vet her is because the CNP (Council for National Policy, James Dobson in particular, had already vetted her to THEIR satisfaction, and by that point McCain was no longer in control of the pick. He was in a weak position because he had nobody acceptable to the Party and because the pressure was for someone who would “activate the base.”
I realize the CNP is one of the most secretive groups in American politics, but I am sure that much of the story behind this lies with them and their relationship with McCain, if only we could get to it.
In a way it reminds me of 2000 — why did Gore pick Joe Lieberman? Lieberman was at that time the head of the DLC. I am sure there were pressures, it’s not as if it was a blue-sky choice. Same thing here, but much more so, because it was already clear that McCain was running a lousy campaign and Obama was running a very good one.
I think that the CNP speculation is probably pretty close to the mark if not dead on. He saw the internal poll numbers and knew they had him by the balls.
But this:
why did Gore pick Joe Lieberman? Lieberman was at that time the head of the DLC.
I’m not so sure about. I still think that the Lieberman pick was part of Gore’s overall strategy of running away from the Clinton legacy. He had become convinced by his advisers that Clinton was an albatross around his neck. Lieberman was the most outspoken Dem about Clinton’s infidelities, so his advisers were pushing Lieberman on him as a way of neutralizing the Clinton “fallout”.
One of the choices that Gore made that showed a lack of judgment – running from success is never a good idea, even if the success is a bit tarnished.

On Tuesday, three state representatives and two state senators sued Democratic Sen. Hollis French, who is overseeing the investigation; Juneau Democratic Sen. Kim Elton, who heads the Legislative Council; independent investigator Steve Branchflower; and the Legislative Council itself.
The lawsuit seeks to either delay the investigation until after the Nov. 4 general election or remove French and Elton.
“There is no nonpartisan reason to complete this investigation until after the election,” said Anchorage attorney Kevin G. Clarkson. “We just want to take the politics out of it and bring fairness back into it.”
Clarkson said he and a nonprofit legal firm in Texas, Liberty Legal Institute, were donating their work on the suit. A phone message for French was not immediately returned.
The Legislative Council, made up of four Democrats and eight Republican, voted unanimously to investigate the circumstances of Monegan’s dismissal.
