Lexis-Nexis doesn’t go back far enough, but I’m sure that a lot of Republicans were saying that the 1932 election was one election not worth winning.

1932 is universally considered to be a realigning election. Realigning election. or critical election or realignment are terms from political history and political science. …
Roosevelt’s campaign saw the New York governor committing himself to battling the Great Depression, promoting a platform with “Three R’s – relief, recovery and reform.” He coined the term “New Deal” when he stated: “I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people.”
President Hoover was widely perceived as being at least in part to blame for the Great Depression; for over 2 years Hoover had been issuing statements that the worst was over, only to have the economy make further downturns. The Great Depression was a massive global economic recession (or depression) that ran from 1929 to approximately 1939. …
“Throughout the nation men and women, forgotten in the political philosophy of the Government, look to us here for guidance and for more equitable opportunity to share in the distribution of national wealth… I pledge you, I pledge myself to a new deal for the American people… This is more than a political campaign. It is a call to arms.”
From Franklin Delano Roosevelt's acceptance speech
"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
I don’t want to get to carried away, but how do Republicans re-group after this election? Was it just 6 years ago that Rove was predicting a “permanent Repbublican majority?” I didn’t buy it then, because it always seemed that Repubs had put together an uneasy alliance – and, you simply can’t be as bad at governance as they are (seriously) and maintain an electoral advanatage. Their record of not delivering must be frustrating to the lemminsg.
I remember Bush standing there in ’04, after a close election, claiming a mandate…then ’06 when the people spoke and Bush did the political equivalent of sticking his fingers in his ears. Obama and the Dem leadership better strike while the iron is hot. Bipartisanship is awesome as long as the Republicans go along with our agenda…
It’s time to start restoring the infrastructure of the New Deal. The bailout is instructive and helpful because it will put into perspective some programs that will help everyday folks, people like Joe the Plumber. Obama has inspired tens of millions of people – I hope he doesn’t waste it.
