I’m still recovering from the incredible richness of the Sweet Revenge ‘Pure’ cupcakes I made last night…

Did you take any pictures before you ate them all up?

CabinGirl on January 22, 2009 at 8:21 am

We still have some, and I’ll take pictures.  I have to confess that I didn’t do the parchment paper thing-y, just used up some of my old cupcake papers instead.  I think the parchment cups might be a good idea next time so that I get a bigger chunk of cake to go with the frosting (I cut the recipe for that in half, and had plenty, btw).

I was thinking you had left on your walk already!  I think I’m taking the doggies out for a long one today too.

Here it is, highly recommended.  BTW, I got my Mexican vanilla at a little Mexican grocery near us.

Now I need to go walk about 15 miles to work off all that buttery goodness…

        • Second Nature
Second Nature on January 22, 2009 at 9:54 am

We officially got 3.5 inches of snow and everything,EVERYTHING was closed for two days.  Today should be about 50, so the meltdown will begin, and by the weekend it will be in the 60s.  I’ve decided that two days of snow is just about perfect for me.

          • CabinGirl
CabinGirl on January 22, 2009 at 10:09 am

Yeah, 2 days to enjoy the pretty and the excuse to stay home, then back to 60 sounds good to me.

Nah-gah-ha-pen here, though.  My cute little red car is white from all the salt and crap they put on the roads, but I’m waiting for the melt before I hit the car wash again.   Maybe tomorrow.

          • Second Nature
Second Nature on January 22, 2009 at 10:10 am

You know, I’ve had my car for 18 months now and I’ve never washed it.  I think the dirt holds it together.

I guess now that they’ve started to use road salt down here I should probably do it.

          • CabinGirl
CabinGirl on January 22, 2009 at 10:16 am

Probably a good idea, although your exposure to the salt is probably a lot less than ours is.  They brine the roads here when they’re worried about ice.

Luna had her final ultrasound yesterday and there wasn’t much fluid visible around the pups.  Which means they’ve gotten as big as their individual placental sacs.

Last night she came a got me at 2:16 am.  She was restless and panting so I spent the following hour lying on the floor next to her and petting her until she finally fell asleep. At which point I moved to the couch.

I just took her morning temperature and it has fallen to 98.3, so were are definitely in the final 48 hours.

I’ve just never liked female characters who play the fool or  make women look like buffoons.  Also, as a kid I could never believe that people really were that dumb.  I’ve learned differently since.

My favorite TV “birth” episode was on “Roseanne”.  She’s in the hospital, in bed and she has a death grip on Dan’s hair in one hand and her sister Laurie’s hair in the other with their heads pulled in close to hers and she’s screaming at Dan, “you did this to me!”

          • Second Nature

He does some sort of “dancing” every morning and evening. My favorite are the high leaps with the 180 degree spins.  Obviously he’s practicing evasive maneuvers.

I feel sorry for all the hutch rabbits, and sorrier still for their owners that they never get to see such joyful acrobatic displays.

          • keres
keres on January 22, 2009 at 6:27 pm

No, I don’t think she “knows” what’s in store, only that she needs to do certain things, like dig a hole under the deck – that I had to block off this morning.

Right now she’s back in the house and antsy and pacing a lot.

Not me.  I like my four-legged kids.  And best of all, they don’t give me colds – like my niece recently did.

They do however get legs caught in the fence, like Inti did yesterday.  I had to cut the fence wire to him out.  He’s got a really bad limp but I think his knee is just pulled, and not broken.

AndiF on January 22, 2009 at 8:22 pm

          • keres
keres on January 22, 2009 at 8:41 pm

Sorry about the ticks.  The only one’s I’ve ever picked up I did on my own.  I think Luna’s only had two or three ticks in her whole life, and no fleas.  I, on the other hand, am a flea magnet.  If there’s a flea in a house it will find me.

Luna’s doing some impressive snoring at the moment.

Bigger and fewer than we thought.

Luna had to have a Caesarian.  One of the pups had died (it was very tiny and under-developed) and its placenta had started to separate and leak blood.

We have two very robust girls and a boy.

Luna is very groggy from the meds and is currently sleeping while the pups suckle.

Yes, all is well.  That’s the most important part.

We were fortunate that I realized fairly quickly that something was amiss, and that we have a very good vet who we could call after-hours.

Luna’s all wrapped up in blankets and towels, with a couple of heat packs as well, to keep her warm.  So it’s a bit crazy looking in the nest at the moment.  The lights are off, or I’d get a photo.

It’s nearly 9am and I’m having my first cup of tea. I ‘slept’ on the couch next to the nest so that I could be close at hand (and so I get up without disturbing Imogen). The puppies had me up about once every half hour and Luna needed to go out at one point. I finally went to bed at 6:30am when Imogen got up to take over.

Luna’s still very out of it, so someone human has to deal with the pups when they cry.

    • maryb2004

They are so cute.  Will they keep their spots or eventually turn all white?

      • keres
keres on January 23, 2009 at 5:40 pm

The spots will fade.  Very few Pyrs are all white.  Most have some color.  Luna has wolf-gray ears and a spot on top of her head, plus a gray big patch on her lower back.  Because their guard hairs are white, sometimes it’s hard to see the color (unless they are wet) where their hair is longest.

Lewis, the father of the litter, has a fine ‘blaireau’ mask and several ‘lemon’ patches.

We’re all really tired.  Especially Luna who mostly just sleeps.

She doesn’t seem to have figured out yet that the pups are hers.  She nurses them OK, but we have to place them on her and clean their bottoms, etc.  I’m hoping that she’ll get into the swing of things once she gets some rest and “sobers up”.

Hector hasn’t really seemed to notice that anything is different.  But then he’s pretty subdued today because apparently I kept him up all night by having the light on.

lol.  I’m not sure what Hector would think of that comparison – probably that it was beneath him to contemplate such a thing.

I just had Luna outside a short while ago to give her back end and tail a wash.  All that hair is definitely a hindrance to getting her clean. She’s back in the box sleeping now, and the puppies are still asleep in the towel I wrap them in whenever she leaves.  When they start stirring I’ll put them against her belly to suckle.  This will probably be my schedule of events for the foreseeable future.

That’s neat (and so tiny). I just googled to find out about it and found this:

The Briard and the Great Pyrenees are the only two AKC breeds that have double dewclaws on the hind legs. Dewclaws are extra toes — vestigial remnants of the ancient ancestors of dogs that had six toes instead of four. The best dewclaws are real toes, placed low on the leg near the other toes to give the dog a wider foot for turning quickly.
