Michael Steele will be the new chairman of the RNC. Now the heads of both parties are African-Americans. They are also both exceptionally talented and intelligent people. I watched Michael Steele wipe the floor with Ben Cardin during a debate they had in 2006 in the Maryland senate race. Post-debate, the polls closed considerably, although not enough to put Steele over the top. I wouldn’t underestimate Steele’s abilities. He is an excellent communicator and he comes off as eminently reasonable. At the same time, he isn’t known for having any original ideas. It also took six ballots for Steele to prevail, so he doesn’t exactly have a strong mandate. The problems facing the Republican Party cannot be overcome with rhetoric and talking points. Nevertheless, considering the options, Steele was the right choice for the Republicans and he will lead them at least a couple of steps in the right direction.

He’s a better choice than Ken Blackwell.
Much like decapitation is a better choice than flensing.
if they’d have really tried, they might have gotten alan keyes…..that seems to be where they’re headed.
Steve Gilliard would have a field day with this. Oreo cookies for everyone.
I was kind of “hoping” Katon Dawson would have won. Having to spin membership at a whites-only country club would have been the capper to the GOP’s meltdown.
You’d think they’d at least have gone after a Mexican American so they don’t look so, well, opportunistic!! 😉
Better than Ken Blackwell.
It took all afternoon and into the evening, and six votes, but the new Chair of the Republican National Committee is Michael Steele (who lost his Senate bid to Ben Cardin in 2006, primarily because he refused to put “Republican” on any of his materials, but pushed his campaign to “Steele Democrats.”) He was featured in an ABC report in 2006:
It took most of the day, but the Republicans have now got a black Chairman… this seems to be their competitive edge against Obama’s Democrats. What fun the 2010 campaigns will be.
This is from Talking points Memo:
Under The LobsterScope
LOL! I love that the redneck has to face his friends after being beaten by a black man.
The Republicans need more than a shiny new bald black guy as the head of the RNC.
Their BIGGEST problems are that:
The above are just over 50% of the population and growing. The remainder are just under the 50% and are dying off.
If Obama ever “teaches” the working and middle class “why” they should vote in their own interests instead of the interests of the Top 10% – then the ball game is – as they say – 100% over.
