Hilda Solis was confirmed today as our new Secretary of Labor. The Senate also successfully invoked cloture on the bill to give DC its voting rights, which means the bill will pass later this week. We’ll see what the Supreme Court does with it. And tonight we’ll have the sort of-State of the Union address. I think it might be time to relax and have a homebrew.

I’m celebrating with some fois gras and duck breast. Why not?
For the first time in a very long time I’m actually looking forward to a Presidential address to Congress. A long time. More than 8 years because Clinton’s were usually so loooooong that I never looked forward to them.
We’re actually staying home to watch this one – in the past, we went to Drinking Liberally to jeer along with everyone else because it made it less painful to watch.
I usually didn’t watch Bush’s. I remember one of my friends was shocked to find that I had no intention of watching the SOTU because he thought I was interested in all things political. But, really, why torture yourself?
I felt the same way!
I used to watch Bush’s big speeches, but usually I would drink too much before and while doing so. So I never got much substance from them, if there was any to be absorbed. I would get too caught up in the Orwellian double-speak and couldn’t understand why anyone would applaud. Then when it was over, I couldn’t take Tweety and company breathlessly raving about how manly Dear Leader is. Thankfully for the drinks, I woouldn’t have much memory of it the next day.
I’ll be watching sober tonight. Maybe have some popcorn.

Just what you’d expect.
In honor of Obama’s big speech tonight, George Lakoff (professor of linguistics and cognitive science,) wrote a rather long essay about Obama’s communications style and the motives behind it that he titled “The Obama Code” which Nate Silver at FiveThirtyEight.com posted earlier today.
Highly recommended. For those of us trying to understand Obama’s brand of “bipartisanship” and just trying to figure out what makes his words so appealing to people like us, you may learn quite a bit. I know I did.
yeah! on solis, and the dc enfranchisement is long overdue.
this warmed the cockles of my cynical heart: For High Earners, April 15 May be a Day of Reckoning…add to that the speculation that the tax rates for the high earners are very likely going up…things are going to start to get very interesting very quickly.
