Good morning CabinGirl! Not so good here, I’m afraid, with chest hack & sore throat. I hate unexpected days off, since no one does my stuff when I’m gone and I’m just that much more behind when I return! Gripe, gripe, gripe! Hope your day is much better;-)

It sounds like you and I are feeling pretty much the same (I have the stuffy nose instead of the hacking cough).  I think it’s this miserable gray damp cold weather that just won’t seem to go away this year.  It feels like November all over again, only this time with daffodils.

I have similar symptoms. I hope that yours are better soon.  This morning I coughed and have never had as much pain in head.  Ugh.

Something similar has been going around down here, and of course I caught it.  It’s taken the better part of two weeks to get (almost) rid of the niggling cough.  I hope you recover quicker.

In the mean time, get some rest.

I had to share this – had too much fun with it!

I work with a bunch of accountants who, thankfully, take grammar very seriously. It’s fun to work with people who actually care about correct usage of the language.

To that end, I send out weekly style tips, pointing out things in our corporate style guide where the company has taken a position, one way or another.

I usually send them on Wednesay, and being that this Wednesday was April Fool’s Day, I couldn’t resist. So I sent these tips. The first one suckered them in. The rest pissed them off until they got to the end. 😉

    New rules!

The global style guide team wishes you to follow these new rules for grammar:

    • Use two spaces after each period.
    • Spell nonrecurring with an extra hyphen. In fact, hyphenate any word Microsoft Word doesn’t recognize, to be safe.
    • Documents have become sentient. Please “inquire of” documents frequently.
    • Use as many words as possible to convey meaning. Our reports are perceived as thin, and it is increasingly hard to justify their expense without more words in them. For example, why say “use” when you can take up more space with “utilize”? Why write simply “and” when you can fill the page with “as well as”?
    • Use as little punctuation as possible now that we are using more words as this makes for quicker reading don’t you agree I knew you would.

In closing and in accordance with these new rules I would like to proffer to you felicitations upon the event of this first day of the month, a day named for a favorite archetype in Shakespeare’s literary renderings.

Or, more simply, Happy April Fools Day! (And please do not follow these rules!)

Very funny. I particularly like the rules for sentient documents. 🙂

Real History Lisa on April 3, 2009 at 1:54 pm

Thanks. That was my personal favorite. I can’t tell you how many times I read our team’s goal is “to inquire of the nature of the balance sheets” or some such. 😉

Hey, we can’t all be Grace Kelly.

We are having yet another wet and miserable day here.  We get a few hours of warm sun, only to pay for it later.

          • AndiF
AndiF on April 3, 2009 at 8:49 am

The weather here has been a rollercoaster — warm and sunny, the cold and wet, then warm and wet, the warm and sunny, then …. well you get it. The forecast has a chance of snow on Monday and a hard freeze Monday night. Yuck and double yuck.

          • CabinGirl
CabinGirl on April 3, 2009 at 8:58 am

This year the weather seems to be changing every 6 hours, rather than on a day-to-day basis, doesn’t it?

I already have my emails out for work, and I think I have the rest of the day to enjoy the, ahem, rain. I bet I can make some serious progress on housecleaning and sleeves for CBtE’s sweater…

Yeah, maybe things are a littletoo relaxed here.

I hope you have a nice restful day.  I always think sleeping it off is the best cure for a nasty cold.

I have the worst allergies this week…watery eyes and stuffy nose.

Indianadem on April 3, 2009 at 8:48 am

Hope you’re over that soon! My brother had a horrible time with allergies as a child. I don’t seem to be bothered much in that area.

Miss Bebo is one of the most elegant dogs I’ve ever seen.  Dogs are the gods of frolic, and you gotta keep moving to do that.  It’s good to see her take a moment’s rest.

    • AndiF
AndiF on April 3, 2009 at 8:53 am

Me, I think you’re full of phooey. 😉

See she is a perpetual motion machine and she has to sleep like that because that way she’ll have to move after a few minutes (I’ve never seen her hold that position for longer than 5-10 minutes).

This little pit/boxer/something-or-other mix was found starving and having already had a litter of pups at less than a year old….and after several weeks at the shelter was due to be put down.  People from Craigslist got together and someone rescued her then asked for someone else to adopt her….the Nature Boy did.  She’s just the calmest, sweetest thing.  She puts her arms around your neck and hugs you and just lets you love on her.

      • Second Nature
Second Nature on April 4, 2009 at 5:26 pm

The shelter was calling her Emma so he kept that.  We’ve had at least 3 cats named Emma over the years.  I don’t have a creative naming streak like Andi does, so when I’d get a tabby with that “M” on its head, I just named her Emma.  :0)
