Yep, that’s my ever alert vicious guard dog. She does chase them if a whole flock is in the grass squawking their heads off. If she’s not up on the porch and can be bothered that is.
He’s still at my uncle’s house. I’ve decided that he considers Bonnie his sister rather than a potential mate or FWB. That, or he’s too lazy to do anything when she’s in heat.
That, or he’s too lazy to do anything when she’s in heat.
Harsh, dude.
If he’s really not interested you might have the vet check him out. Even snipped males get worked up a bit around a female in season – as I’m all too aware of when Luna’s in heat.
harsh, yes, but to watch the female attack him, clearly wanting to mate, and the indifference he gives her is puzzling. Wondered if maybe he needs to be checked out, will have to explore that. He was fairly isolated for years, so we just chalked it up to him missing the motivation of any instinctual urges.
Well you don’t have to worry because we have an agreement with the snakes — whenever you come to visit, they go to the next county to bother the college kids. 🙂
It makes me think if the times I’ve heard a rattlesnake. Even though I know I shouldn’t, I run. There’s clearly an atavistic trigger in that sound. Of course, once I compose myself I usually go back for a look. They can only strike two-feet at most.
on my living room wall tonight. Does this qualify as a critter? It’s really quite pretty up close and if it’s gonna eat mosquitoes I think I’ll keep it around.
i have had a slight lapse in work-related insanity so have been out and about the tubes the past couple of days. i knew i had stayed away too long when i realized that my TU status was lost. :-/
Pretty well. You might remember your posing a question on a Welcome Wagon or some such thing of what people would do if they won the lottery. I spoke of buying an adobe house on the outskirts of Albuquerque. Well, guess what? Except for the adobe part, mission accom — okay, that phrase has been ruined for all time, but you get the idea.
God, I love New Mexico, and particularly the part of it I reside in. As I’ve never loved a place — and I’ve moved around a lot, and been lucky enough to live in a lot of attractive places, in my half-century of existence.
Now, if only somebody would buy the old place so that I could be done with Arkansas once and for all…
¡felicidades! i love albuquerque. the quietish life reminds me of tucson. plus, tons of great food and venues for music of all types. there’s a good crew of progressive bloggers in that area, you should hook up with them at a meetup (or tweetup) sometime.
I’m sure it’s gotten nicer, it was just starting to gentrify went I left twelve years ago. I lived one cornfield and a two houses away the Rio. In the winter we got Sandhill cranes handing out in our back pasture.
It’s “number three reed”. It comes from being a woodwind player — reeds get graded in strengths, “number 2”, “number 2 1/2”, etc., and number 3 is sort of my default across various instruments and situations. (Note: I’m no Arthur Gilroy when it comes to musical accomplishment, nor do I claim to be.)
FWIW, I’ve always mentally pronounced your moniker as if it rhymed with Paris, and I’m glad to be set straight.
My own screen name is not something I’m crazy about but I chose it when I chose it and I’m stuck with it. As a nickname, “Reed” would make me very happy. NOT “No. 3”; I have been addressed that way before, and it makes me feel like a character in “The Prisoner” being addressed by Leo McKern.
Well I’m glad you’re back and sorry you’ve been away and even sorrier I went to bed and missed the conversation. You’re all four-ed here and at the cafe. Just keep dropping by the cafe and we’ll have your TU status back in no time.
bien, gracias. trying to keep my head above water as layoffs continue in the education realm of AZ with a state legislature that loves to slash school budgets. plus, saving money to buy a roof over my head by the summer. this weekend is the Tucson Mariachi Conference, though, so I am on a natural high.
Lily is beautiful. I’ve really enjoyed seeing her grow. Has Hector fully acclimated to the barbarian invasion?
aw…
A young male Green rosella.
wow, good shot. what a colorful guy.
I’d much rather see that in the tree near my patio instead of the pigeons that I’m convinced are NSA spies.
lol. Where’s a peregrine when you need one?
Another angle. He’ll have stunningly blue tail- and flight-feathers when he’s all grow’ed up.
Like this one.
This is how I typically see them.
(Look in the upper right hand corner if you’re having trouble finding the bird)
that sent many guffaws out my mouth. great picture

All the photos are great but this is my fav or the bunch — I love the positioning of the rear feet.
Here’s another one.
She’s still at that “boneless” stage.
ooh, oh baby, yes, yes … aaaaaaahhhhhhh!
lol
but she must have pillows..
Ah a blazing talent at the art of being comfy.
Aaaawwwwwwwwww.
Nope, we don’t spoil our pets.
I miss Bud 🙁

Which reminds me – must schedule that operation.

There might be some doggie viagra you could get him. 😀
And yep, females in the mood can get a tad aggressive with uncooperative males.
That sounds like my last marriage for awhile….

and not at all tired yet …

Great photos.
So, whose the tired one? You?
It goes without saying that I’m always the tired one (so why did I say it).
Anyhoo, catching Bebo in a restful pose outside is a quite the accomplishment.
Clearly, the water slows her down.
a suggestion that we go elsewhere.

what the hell is that?
As keres said, it’s a hognose. They react to threats by either playing dead or playing like a cobra.
And, as the bottom photo clearly shows, it has a hog-like nose.
That would scare the crap out of me…
Well you don’t have to worry because we have an agreement with the snakes — whenever you come to visit, they go to the next county to bother the college kids. 🙂
More likely it’s the college kids that bother the snakes.
I remember reading once that 90% of the snake bites in the US involved young men, and alcohol.
and the words “Hey! Watch this!”
Yep.
You know you’re a redneck if:
the recent death of one of your relatives was preceded by “hey fellas, watch this”;
your porch collapsed and more than three dogs died in the accident;
you go to family reunions to pick up girls;
you finally took the wheels off your house.
you walk to school with your mom, cuz she’s in the same grade
you’ve ever worn a tube top to a wedding
you can divorce your wife, but she’s still your sister
you’ve been married three times but you still have the same in-laws
It’s meant to.
It makes me think if the times I’ve heard a rattlesnake. Even though I know I shouldn’t, I run. There’s clearly an atavistic trigger in that sound. Of course, once I compose myself I usually go back for a look. They can only strike two-feet at most.
Impressive photos of a hog-nosed snake.

Yes.
It’s a mosquito hawk, and definitely someone you should let live in the house.
I can’t believe how pretty he is up close. Looks like he’s made out of copper and silver thread. Manny would hate him though. Hey Manny….Boo!
Oops, I see you labelled it mosquito hawk right there on the photo, so I probably didn’t need to write it above.
Yep, pretty, and a great close-up photo.
Fortunately it’s one of the few bugs that will sit still enough for me to capture. You OTOH seem to get amazing shots of things in mid-flight.
I think it’s been awhile since I got a good “mid-flight” shot, but thank you for the complement.
it’s beautifully photographed on my screen. I would prefer that it stays there 🙂
Oh-oh. I didn’t know you’d be here.
Keep your eyes on the mosquito.
Don’t look up above it.
i have had a slight lapse in work-related insanity so have been out and about the tubes the past couple of days. i knew i had stayed away too long when i realized that my TU status was lost. :-/
Work-related insanity: can’t help.
TU status: doing what we can.
hi no3reed! hope life is treating you well

Thanks, Manny! But if you think Albuquerque is quiet, or even quietish, brother, have I got some places to show you.
I will certainly do as you suggest once I’m in the area full-time (i.e. once I’m rid of the old place once and for all).
I lived in NM for seven years. One year in Albuquerque and six years just south in the little village of Bosque Farms.
It’s a magical place.
Bosque Farms is nice!
I’m sure it’s gotten nicer, it was just starting to gentrify went I left twelve years ago. I lived one cornfield and a two houses away the Rio. In the winter we got Sandhill cranes handing out in our back pasture.
Sounds like it’s gotten less nice, rather than more …
Yeah, now that you mention it.
cool!
Hi no3reed.
I’ve long wondered, how do you pronounce your handle?
Mines Greek, and pronounced “series”, in case you wondered.
Hi keres,
It’s “number three reed”.

I need to get my saxophone re-padded. [wistful sigh]
Me too. I know the feeling.
Makes perfect sense once you explain it.
Be sure to have a wood-oven pizza at Il Vicino on Central ave just a few blocks east of the University, they’re fab.
Oh, and be sure stop at the Fajita Factory (across the road from the Uni) whenever you want a quick bite to eat. Mmmmmm.
Noted. Thanks for the tips!
Well I’m glad you’re back and sorry you’ve been away and even sorrier I went to bed and missed the conversation. You’re all four-ed here and at the cafe. Just keep dropping by the cafe and we’ll have your TU status back in no time.
Hola Manny. Que tal?

Hector has accepted that she’s here to stay, but he still keeps his eye on her.
Mariachis! Lucky you.
Wow, it would make a really cool sculpture.
Oh wow… what a great pic. Sleeping dogs are so-ooo relaxing. Even when they start involuntarily twitching and barking. 😉
