not necessarily – nerds are nice guys! where I’ve heard about it before is among apparently successful white men in white male dominated areas trying to bar the doors against “incursion” of non white men. Hence the med school instances in the 70’s and 80’s when med school students more diverse than previous decades.
IIRC, most internet technology was driven by porn, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the leading edge conference has some of those themes. That in no ways makes it acceptable and people should definitely speak up as this lady did, but nobody should be surprised.
