Congratulations to the Chicago BlackHawks for winning their first Stanley Cup in forty-nine years. You earned it. But the Flyers had a truly magical playoff run.
I’m just going to supply some quality tunes before I make my last request for reader support for the month.
Yeah, that’s from the Stanley Theater on December 1st, 1979. You can skip ahead to track 10 if you want to hear something really special. I don’t supply average tunes, but only shit that is triumphant.
Many of you made generous donations already, but I have to make one more plea for support from y’all. It’s a tough economy and there’s not much advertising being sold these days. If you value an independent perspective, please consider making a contribution to the Frog Pond. I thank you in advance.
By the way, this was the first Stanley Cup I really watched consistently since the New York Rangers’ 1994 run. It was a really good matchup. It kind of rekindled my interest in hockey a bit. But the real fun begins soon with the World Cup. I can’t wait to watch the England v. United States matchup on Saturday afternoon.
What are you eagerly awaiting?
Was there any player on the team whose name was Hull?
No, I don’t think so.
I am eagerly awaiting the Rapture. Can’t wait. Goldman Sach’s CEO did say he was doing God’s work after all.
That doesn’t happen until the Cubbies win the World Series.
And Israelis and Palestinians are likely to be living in peace before the Cubbies win the World Series.
That’s an article of faith for a Cubbies fan.
The Cubs do seem to reward the faithful every year.
TPM has obtained copies of the check that Alvin Greene (Dem Senate nominee) used to pay his filing fee and the filing form.
The check is interesting. Although hard to read the branch bank, National Bank of South Carolina is the bank it was drawn on. And it looks like the branch is Manning, SC, not Columbia, where he would be filing. More curious is the name on the check: a hand printed name “Alvin M. Greene for Senate”. TPM opines that it one of the blank checks that new customers get for an account and have to write in their information.
There is no evidence to suggest that the SC Democratic Party checked to see if there really was a committee formed by that name, either as a legal assumed name of a corporation.
The pledge is that if defeated he will not run for another party. There is no pledge of honesty in the filing, no evidence of any vetting. No real service provided by the SC Democratic Party to party members for the revenue of $10,440. What is the value-added of this state party organization? (Of course the same could be said of the current DNC as well.)
Rep. Jim Clyburn (SC-06) is claiming that there were three African-American plants in the Tuesday primaries: US Senate (Alvin Greene), SC-01, and SC-06.
Clyburn defeated one of them but Greene and the candidate in SC-01 won their primaries. And folks are now going back to the precinct records and noticing that some predominantly white precincts voted for Greene and the other candidates over white candidates in percentages not consistent with previous elections.
As yet, nothing ties the Republican Party to this but there might be a white network opposed to Democrats who pulled this off.
Clyburn is calling for the US Attorney for SC to investigate.
Booman, thanks for the shout out from the Philly area! I live in downtown Chicago so I just got back from the ticker tape Chicago Blackhawks parade and the best celebration ever in the city of Chicago!!! One of my friends was in the bagpipe band that led the parade and he said it was not only the biggest he’s ever been in but in his opinion, the best ever, including all the St. Patrick’s Day parades he’s been in for the past 15 years as a member of Shannon’s Rovers bagpipe band that travels all over the U.S.
I would have to agree – I couldn’t believe how many fans were there today – the police estimated 2 million at the celebration. The pure enjoyment of the fans (and the players all too young and unknown to be jaded about it) was just fun to see. Here’s a clip of the just the players at the podium today after the parade.

After the parade (and after we got all the confetti out of hair and clothes)we just HAPPENED to be in the hotel where the players and coaches and owner came in. So I got to shake hands with the goalie Niemi and my friend got a picture with the real deal Stanley Cup and autographs by Bobby Hull and Tony Esposito on the back of her shirt!
