There’s no rush at all — my social calendar is not so full that I require more than a day or two notice for planning. But whenever you do email me, you should include Mary too because she was interested in a meetup if the stars were to align right.
It was quite nasty for my former fire company last night when they got called to aid another dept. on a house fire for 5 hours. It was one of those nights that made me grateful I had retired from that business! Everybody is really wrung out today, but otherwise ok.
Yay! And I’m working from home this morning because I have a client meeting at lunchtime. Woo-hoo! I love sleeping in a little and hanging out in shorts and a t-shirt to work again. 🙂
That’s how we like our county officials — decisive and successful. 🙂
Speaking of which, I was listening to WFIU’s story about the legislature failing to pass cyclical assessing and how that’s going to put us right back in the mess a lot of counties like ours just got out of. No wonder you didn’t run again.
Its unfortunate the legislators didn’t listen to those who are closest to the problem, but often that seems to be the way of things. Our county, OTOH, is in much better shape on the assessment cycle, having made it to the top 50% of counties (coming from dead last 3 1/2 years ago). We’re going to be ok now & I predict we’ll have the last laugh on those who ridiculed us so cruelly not long ago;-)
We were in the kitchen around 10 PM or so. There was dead calm here in the yard as far as wind speed goes. And we heard this huge crunching sound of a tree breaking loose. It turned out to be a 20″ dia branch of the huge cottonwood, 4′ dia. It’s on the way out to the garden and orchard. No auto, people, or dogs where under it when it fell. And we’ve been going back and forth under that tree branch several times every day… so could have been nasty…
So we’re lucky it pretty much missed the bunkhouse roof, only slightly bending the drip edge for a few feet and knocked off a 3″ triangle of shingle on the bottom NW corner. So wheeeeuuuuwww!
Glad it didn’t do anything major and especially glad all people and critters were unhurt.
We’ve had one branch come down big enough to do real damage which did — to a car. Everything else (including a couple of full trees) has managed to be miss us.
We had a similar event when I was a kid. Half of a huge tree split and fell. The only damage was a small fist-sized dent on the roof of our then old 1954 Chevy. A newer vehicle would likely have been flattened. We have a photo somehwhere, film-based of course.
Nice light/shadow in the photo! The last time that happened here, it was January on a Friday. The limb took out our electric lines and ripped the meter off the house. We weren’t able to get an electrician until Monday, so we shivered all weekend. When we did the permanent repair, it included the precaution of burying the lines all the way out to the service pole, an expensive, but decidedly warmer solution to the problem of having self-pruning soft maples near the house.
And turn down the volume of dust says my poor nose which really hates being anywhere near where harvesting is going on (it also is very unfond of grain elevators).
I used to tolerate it to some extent, but I try not to get in it’s path now. So it’s good that my high school classmate and his three sons are doing the farming now.
Not much of a good morning here, I’m afraid. Dumbles isn’t pestering me to go out, and the other dogs are quiet after last night’s events. I’m having a slow morning, and I’ll head over to work eventually. I have the worst headache.
Finny, however, is his usual charming, chattering self today. 🙂
It does make a big hole, especially at dog dinnertime and when we come home from anywhere.
My headache went away, thanks.
And now I have a sad baby who has figured out that mommy goes somewhere in the morning instead of staying by his side where she belongs, so he can call on her at any given moment. :/
I’ve been out trying to get some wood stacked before it got too hot — turns out that’s impossible.
Bebo says that filling the Hopeful-sized hole was a lot of work but she was up to it and that when you’re ready, she bets the Humane Society will have a puppy who’s up to that job for you.
Oh that looks so wonderful. My vacation starts Friday, and not a moment too soon. my client is totally insane. Like, I need a case of beer and an inflatable slide insane…
We sure do, and heading back down there now – a 2-hr drive coming up.
swimmer returned to Sweden with boyfriend yesterday – it’s only young asklet and myself these last few days.
thanks for asking!! Arrived this evening. Now up late worrying!!! but discovered a great new route – 72/36 from St. Josephs, MO through Indiana; very relaxing, and found a great ice cream place outside Indianapolis. saves about 100 mi and is very scenic hence less stressful. Observations from travels: last summer I saw a great number of windmill propellers being transported on trucks. This summer I saw a substantial number of huge items I couldn’t identify being transported on “oversized” convoys. I wanted to ask the drivers what the items were. anyway, maybe a good sign re: manufacturing.
Blue Monday here – back at work.
Delays in my return last night, missed connection to Geneva and was stuck in Zurich overnight. Red-eye flight this morning. Pounding headache while reviewing 2 weeks worth of e-mails. Ugh!
Hmm – you need to be a TU to give zeros.
I believe you need at least 10 comments rated within a 30-day period to become TU.
Post in the cafe regularly and it will come.
I thought I had become a TU back in the early 00’s. Could it have dissipated from lack of use? As I recall, I did get kinda pissy about the whole rating thing, so it really doesn’t matter now. I’ll go with the 1 if I need to.
Afraid not – only frontpagers can remove diaries. Most of the time Booman or CG will notice spam diaries, sometimes it takes an e-mail to admin (link to address at the bottom of the page).
I’ve got a friend who was a long-standing book buyer for Barnes and Noble. He was let go over a year ago. Now he loads packages for UPS part time. There are few/none jobs to be found. It is depressing.
Yeah, that’s not good at all. I once spent a couple of months between jobs humping furniture for North American Van Lines. My sympathies to your friend. Hope something decent turns up soon for him.
Well at least the hearing went well tonight. My successor should be pleased. Today at work a taxpayer from the lower end of the economic scale said. “God Bless You” three times to me and I didn’t even sneeze. I think my work here is nearly completed. Commencing semi-retirement on New Years Eve.
And not a moment too soon in arriving…
How is everyone this fine day?
It’s got to be better than yesterday which was teh sux. Is it dark by you like it is here?
Was dark here, sun just coming out. still no rain as far as I can tell. Plants and trees not happy about that.
I think it was kind of dark all day…but I was inside all day, so that might be part of it.
I was hot and now I’m not quite so hot.
Are your upcoming travel plans still going to include a side trip for some fried biscuits?
Our upcoming plans are still in a wee bit of flux…can I email you this evening?
We have the most gawdawful humidity here today…I am dying for a swim after work (even though I work in AC comfort…)
There’s no rush at all — my social calendar is not so full that I require more than a day or two notice for planning. But whenever you do email me, you should include Mary too because she was interested in a meetup if the stars were to align right.
Same here, social calendarwise.
It is awful right now, but to get better for tomorrow/weekend.
It was quite nasty for my former fire company last night when they got called to aid another dept. on a house fire for 5 hours. It was one of those nights that made me grateful I had retired from that business! Everybody is really wrung out today, but otherwise ok.
They showed the fire on channel 8 news. It looked horrendous. I’m very glad everybody is okay.
TGIF! Yippee!
Yay! And I’m working from home this morning because I have a client meeting at lunchtime. Woo-hoo! I love sleeping in a little and hanging out in shorts and a t-shirt to work again. 🙂
What are you all up to this weekend?
Just chillin’. Sleep sounds so good.
Adventures in country living…
Dang squatters!
Yikes! That one is getting too big. Time for chemical warfare.
Done!

Hah! Brown County rules!
Saw this related BBC news link yesterday:
Six-foot wasp nest found in Southampton pub
Can you imagine!
Oh my!
“Oh” was the first thing I was going to say, but “my” was not the second word.
lol
So creepy! Winged stinging insects are SO not my thing.
Especially 500 000 strong.
Yikes!

Good to hear that no one was hurt.

See video links at flickr, be sure to turn volume down as the machines are noisy.

The combine auguring grain from it’s hopper to the grain cart, on the go.

Hope your sinuses have cleared by now! 🙂

… oh yeah, also Indianadem spouse, JimF, AndiF (in mirror with camera), Errol, Indianadem
meetup + pastrami !!!!!!!
Good morning and safe travels.
That looks fun! And the pastrami doesn’t look bad either. 🙂
Fabulous food, delightful company!
Love that you were in the photo too! 🙂
I’ll have the pastrami on rye.
I’d like to have you here having it. 🙂
That looks like fun company and good food.

I hope that your day gets better. It’ll be in the 90s here.
It just makes a giant hole in the home, doesn’t it.
I hope the headache cleared up.

It appears Bebo has the Zen of relaxation down pretty well.
Former Senator Ted Stevens was on a plane that crashed in Alaska. There are some dead and some survivors, but no word yet on Stevens.
stevens didn’t survive this one.

Good morning!
Visiting one of my sisters so proper internet access is available (none at the cabin). Will try to upload some photos.
It’s been sunny and pleasant almost every day.
The pleasures of a boat ride
Same spot as the top image – just turn 150 degrees
Family outing
A boy and
histhe neighbors’ dogs.and what a great way to get past it.
Thanks for the posting the pictures. I love seeing them.
And I’m glad you and the kids (the neighbor’s dogs) are having a fine time.
Oh that looks so wonderful. My vacation starts Friday, and not a moment too soon. my client is totally insane. Like, I need a case of beer and an inflatable slide insane…
Two beers and a slide did the trick for this guy; now, a whole case…your client must be demanding…
Enjoy vacation when it comes!
Looks like you’re having a great time!
We sure do, and heading back down there now – a 2-hr drive coming up.
swimmer returned to Sweden with boyfriend yesterday – it’s only young asklet and myself these last few days.
What a lovely spot! Looks like a great time to me!
I think I might love it even more if there was rain. Yesterday’s brief little downpour definitely didn’t satisfy my (or the woods) thirst for rain.
We are a bit parched here as well. One brief drizzle this AM has done little to help.
It barely wet the ground here, but briefly cooled temperatures about 10 degrees. Half an hour later, it was as hot as before.
We had a bit more than that — it rained hard for about 15 minutes. Still nothing like what we need.
Wonderful pictures! beautiful place!
Hi Errol. Are you back home?
thanks for asking!! Arrived this evening. Now up late worrying!!! but discovered a great new route – 72/36 from St. Josephs, MO through Indiana; very relaxing, and found a great ice cream place outside Indianapolis. saves about 100 mi and is very scenic hence less stressful. Glad you’re home and enjoyed your new route since that’s not exactly a drive that’s filled with fascinating landscapes.
The theme this week is Random (your choice). Click here for the diary.
Looking forward to it!
And now it gets interesting:
excellent! among the lies I heard on Rush today/ yesterday was that for democrats, sexual crimes don’t have repercussions (re: Alvin Greene).
The weather gods get — somewhat — kind. Temps only in the upper 80s tomorrow and they’re supposed to stay there for the rest of the week.
Kind of peeves me though to have to be grateful for that when what I really want time temps in the 70s and low humidity.
We’re finally getting some much-needed rain. It’s a light gentle rain but still appreciated.
Some rain here too finally yesterday afternoon. thanks for sharing it.
Izzat low temps or highs?
`Cause if it’s highs, be very VERY grateful.
And send water.
I am very grateful — the temps are going to be about 12 degrees lower than they have been.
Sadly the cooler temps are not coming with rain so we are less high but still very, very dry. No water to send. 🙁

Good morning!
Looks kind of steep.
Blue Monday here – back at work.
Delays in my return last night, missed connection to Geneva and was stuck in Zurich overnight. Red-eye flight this morning. Pounding headache while reviewing 2 weeks worth of e-mails. Ugh!
Take it slowly. I hope that the headache is better.
No improvement yet.
I foresee an early return home…
BTW – I need some help handing out donuts.
This user is on a spamming rampage.
How do you do that? Zero is not one of my rating options.
Hmm – you need to be a TU to give zeros.
I believe you need at least 10 comments rated within a 30-day period to become TU.
Post in the cafe regularly and it will come.
But I forgot – if you give a 1 now, the average rating is still below 1, so the comment will become hidden anyway.
I thought I had become a TU back in the early 00’s. Could it have dissipated from lack of use? As I recall, I did get kinda pissy about the whole rating thing, so it really doesn’t matter now. I’ll go with the 1 if I need to.
What a world!….
Whee! Can you do that to diaries?
Afraid not – only frontpagers can remove diaries. Most of the time Booman or CG will notice spam diaries, sometimes it takes an e-mail to admin (link to address at the bottom of the page).
Could it have dissipated from lack of use?
That’s exactly what happens. No posting in 30 days and all your mojo is gone…
(See my comment a little up)
Take the rest of the day off and go home.
That’s how we do ’em here — short and steep.
Hope you’ve recovered from the long trip back and your headache.
Good morning!
Amazing what 8.5 hrs of straight sleep can do…
But the reality of real work is setting in.
Heh. I haven’t gotten that much sleep in years. Good luck with work.
Good on the sleep, feh on the work.
Glad you were able to get rested. Sorry about that work thing.

The woods are still a lovely shade of green, despite the heat & drought stress. I’ve been noticing a significant leaf drop in some species, though.

(OTOH, the alternative is worse, I went 12 months without and that was thoroughly depressing.)

Now if only the GOP doesn’t regain enough power to turn the social security trust fund over to their bankster friends, we should be ok.
I think we’ll be fine but I worry about the folks behind us who the Republicans think should work until they’re overdue at the nursing home.
Down with the Catfood Commission!
That’s a photo from late July. There’s considerably less lovely green now — and some trees have started turning.
But you’re coming to come back and tell me that the county is funding county-wide wifi … right?
