I’m not sure if there is any causation involved, but the only Republican presidential contenders who will acknowledge that the Earth is heating up and that human beings are responsible happen to be Mormons. Of course, neither Romney nor Huntsman wants to do anything about it. They’re merely willing to concede that scientists agree that the climate is changing because of all the carbon dioxide we’re pumping into the atmosphere. That’s supposed to make them ‘moderate.’

“Of course, neither Romney nor Huntsman wants to do anything about it.”
This. Exactly. I’m getting tired of seeing people give these two a cookie for acknowledging reality when they don’t have any desire to fix it.
Well, Glen Beck is a mormon convert, right?
Anyhow, part of this phenom of slightly-less-insane Mormon GOP candidates is the church’s alienation from right-wing evangelical sects in general. part of it is that Mormons have never rejected public schooling to the extent of many other Christian denominations. The result is an unusual combination of fundamentalism and modernism, and a general lack of interest in screwing up science except in the service of very narrow church goals. I think that is changing rapidly (as evidenced by the Prop 8 battle, in which the Mormons donated more hate speech than their evangelical rivals) but there is still a current generation that is less extreme.
It is aggravating to have to listen to these guys criticize Obama’s leadership with loud voices while the best they can do is nibble at any form of leadership themselves.
Of course they’re up against all gun no brains leadership values so who knows.
