I think this is so cool. I just know it will make Rush Limbaugh’s head explode. It must be a defilement of the White House, right? Worse, even, than planting a vegetable garden or taking off your shoes and enjoying snacks in the Residence. In any case, it’s a heartwarming story. Anyone who actually makes a stink about it is just evil.

But but but….
It’s the White House!
What will we do? President Blackidy black black black can’t go hanging paintings about racism in the White House!
(Limbaugh has a long-overdue heart attack)
Let’s just see Rush make a stink about Norman Rockwell (Stan Freeberg’s “skinny kid with a pipe”).
That’s like attacking Lawrence Welk for playing subversive music.
OT: The mystery is solved. The official dictator’s passport says “Mohammed Moammar M. alGathafi”.
But it’s true! Why did Norman Rockwell hate white Americans?
<snark>
i am, in fact, very angry with your hero today: removing Eric Schneiderman so the banks don’t have to pay makes me sick to my stomach, especially when i think of the thousands of families like those of Bridges -poor, disemfranchised, struggling to make it- who will be fucked. And I think it’s embarrassing, but unsurprising, that you’ve ignored it.
but this is a good post, at least when it comes to symbolism.
removed him?
I’ve been busy today. What are you talking about?
According to some reports, pressure was brought against Schneiderman by the White House and Donovan at HUD.
W/e. For this I’ll quote Charles Davis:
Obviously, Limbaugh will accuse Obama of racism for displaying a painting that includes the word “nigger”.
I just saw this on exhibit a few months ago at the art museum. I’d seen pictures of it before but I have to say that seeing it in person is much more powerful…there are a lot of details you can only see in the original full size painting. Rockwell mainly did idyllic whitebread scenes, but this was a very powerful statement and I’m glad I saw it.
Yeah… it’s interesting we remember Rockwell for his Sat. Evening Post stuff, but some of his pieces pack a punch. He wasn’t just a saccharine Thomas Kinkead-type.
Here’s an article and video clip from the Norman Rockwell Museum’s website about Pres. Obama and Ruby Bridges visiting the museum before the painting was transferred to the White House:

You can see highlights from the museum’s collection—including “The Problem We All Live With”, “Freedom of Speech”, “The Golden Rule”, “Murder in Mississippi”, “Freedom from Want”, and “New Kids in the Neighborhood (Negro in the Suburbs)”—starting here:

One way to think of Pres. Obama’s approach to politics is that he conducts himself in such a way that the children and grandchildren of Norman Rockwell (and his fans) will vote for him.

Since this thread is all over the place anyway:
Have everyone seen the video of Rick Perry answering a question about the civil rights movement?
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/22/rick-perry-civil-rights_n_933420.html
I don’t think I’ve seen anyone note the most important part of his answer: he clearly has no idea what he’s talking about. He has nothing whatsoever to say about the subject. He plainly doesn’t know anything about the history of the movement, and doesn’t care to know. His answer is the behavior of someone doing a tapdance, trying to sound knowledgeable and thoughtful without anything to say.
That’s why he made that awkward, unfortunate transition to taxes and regulation: to get himself back onto familiar territory.
