How do you feel about the birther joke Mitt Romney made today?

Makes_Birther_Joke
Thanks! As to what I think, I do not see a joke. I don’t even see a real birther pitch, just a lame excuse for one. Is his point that Hawaii is a foreign place? That Obama was raised outside the US while he was raised in Michigan?
I think this is something to rouse his troops but will no effect on anyone not already an Obama hater.
It appears to have roused at least one of Romney’s troops in this forum.
Do you have any interest in interacting with the other side? Or would you rather quietly sleep in a cocoon of Progressive bliss?
Interacting with the other side – as it is currently constituted – is utterly overrated: infinitely more heat than light is generated from such interactions. However, using the other side to sharpen one’s rhetorical skills is indeed useful, like pre-season football.
Of course, no one has bothered- he wouldn’t show it anyway! Some kind of Churchy prohibition.
He can’t show the house he grew up in because it was razed during a blight removal campaign after the collapse of Detroit’s manufacturing base.
Maybe we should ask him to take us to that house.
Detroit collapsed due to statist policies…what’s your point?
Nah, go read Thomas Sugrue’s “The Origins Of The Urban Crisis” for a better understanding of Detroit’s fall (and how it’s an earlier and heightened version of the crisis hundreds of American cities experienced in the middle of the last century.
Detroit collapsed due to statist policies
Indeed, the Japanese and German states’ adoption of actual industrial policies really kicked the American auto industry’s ass.
Right up until the auto bailout took the keys away from the private-sector idiots and put them in the hands of competent people, and the fortunes of Detroit turned around almost instantly.
Pisses me off, particularly with people who write it off as “just a joke”. Nevermind the dog-whistling welfare ads, nevermind the “anglo-saxon” relations bullshit, nevermind the “doesn’t understand what it is to be an American” bullshit…it was just a joke. Or as Romney defended it “the crowd loved it”…yeah well guess what people used to love watching a lynching too…don’t make lynching right!
I’m seriously reaching what some called the “Roots” point. It the idea that after watching Alex Haley’s Roots, or “Rosewood” or “Misissippi Burning” where I just need a day or two to come down off my anger before I just explode at the next white person for real or subtle or imagined racial actions.
I’m actually really just tired of it. And that makes me more pissed off damnit black people in America as a whole have taken a whole lot of things in stride in this country and ugh forget it…it just pisses me off.
Even Andrea Mitchell said: “Nothing to see here, move along folks.” Which is a shame because of all the lily white asshats that compromise the Corporate Media, she’s probably the only one that has been the victim of racism. And why? Because she was once married to a black man(Gil Jackson). Yes, her marriage to Greenspan is her second. Funny thing, as I think Boo could tell you, she tried to write that chapter out of her autobiography. The early 1970’s in Philly couldn’t have been very pleasant for someone like her, even if she was working in the local corporate media at the time.
Work it off, friend. Work on voter registration, especially if you live in a voter suppression state. Help make sure every one of your brothers is registered and gets to the polls. Even if you live in a safe state like Illinois, work to make the national count high so there can be no claim of illegitimacy.
I had been planning to vote Green or blank as a protest, Illinois being a safe state, but I’m going to vote for Obama because of the extreme repugnancy of the GOP slate. I even believe I might vote for Lieberman over Romney-Ryan, although my stomach turns at the thought. I hate voting for the lesser evil, but sometimes the greater evil is too great to ignore. I might make my first diary on how I came to this stance.
I gather you are black. Don’t take ANY chance of the first black President being repudiated at the polls. I make this argument in addition to my argument in the second paragraph.
After November, you and I can go back to arguing. Right now — Solidarity.
While President Obama needs to stay above the fray,
one of his surrogates needs to respond by saying the following:
“Well, I see that Mitt Romney made a little joke about his birth certificate.
I’m sure that he was casting no aspersions on President Obama ahd his birth certificate.
President Obama’s is, and has been, on his website for years.
Well, I want to assure you folks of this – “No one’s ever asked President Obama see HIS tax returns!
They’ve been a matter of public record for years.
And he and Michelle don’t have any money in Swiss, Bahamian, or Cayman Islands accounts!
Mr. Romney, you can check out the President’s birth certificate at his website anytime. As can every American.
We’ll even be happy to show his original to you personally – if you disclose your tax returns for the last 5 to 10 years.
When will you release your tax returns, Mr. Romney?
Don’t you think Americans should be able to see both birth certificates, and the last 10
years of both of tax returns?”
Mitt Romney is lower than sea-slug shit.
Romney would curse his mother if it pleased his audience. I think the lack of subtlety in his comments shows his lack of a brain. He is not real just the latest Repug weirdo joke.
Make that the latest “latest wierdo Repug racist joke.” He hangs with Trump because they are both racist assholes.
Oh wait, I forgot to add the disrespecting of the NAACP in their own house and then going in front of his white brethren to tell “those people” if they want to be handed free stuff vote for the the other guy.
Wow. It’s not the “joke” people, it’s the damn pattern that is emerging and it really pisses my people off.
Not surprising he to 0% of AA vote in that NBC/WSJ poll
Romney clearly has chosen for Libertarian economic policy with the associated JBS racist undertone. Watching him sink like Barry Goldwater in 1964! The Romney/Ryan campaign act in his Michigan homeland. Don’t accept it as a joke because it isn’t, it’s racist with a supremacist smirk.
Did Hoover’s illegal Operation COINTELPRO against domestic political organizations and activists primarily target the Afro-American community. Did the CIA know about the introduction of drugs as a means to control the black community?
The convention speaker lineup is infinitely more shocking than Romney’s remark. I suppose they figure none of the overt nutcases will be on tv, so they can placate their racist teabagger base and still pose as “moderate” and “serious” for the prime time viewers.
I was going to comment that Goldwater had a deep schism in his party, with Anderson running as an independent moderate Republican. But then, what about no one from the Bush administration attending the convention? I think that indicates a party schism.
On the other hand, the MSM branded Goldwater as a dangerous nut, while today they push Romney’s agenda and portray him as a serious alternative to Obama. The financial press in particular claim his election would be a boost to the economy.
FWIW, Anderson ran against Reagan in 1980, not Goldwater in 1964.
[punching myself in the head] ARRRGGGHH!
The primary candidates running against Goldwater were Nelson Rockefeller, Margaret Chase Smith, Hiram Fong, Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., Ohio native son candidate James Rhodes, Pennsylvania native son William Scranton, John Byrnes, and the perennial Harold Stassen. In the few primaries that there were, Byrnes took Wisconsin and Maryland, Rhodes took Ohio, Scranton took Pennsylvania, Rockefeller took West Virginia and Oregon, Henry Cabot Lodge took New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New Jersey, and Goldwater took California, South Dakota, Nebraska, Texas, Illinois, Indiana, and Florida. Goldwater was nominated on the first ballot. George Romney, Mitt’s dad, got 41 votes on the first ballot, likely native son votes from Michigan intended to be a firewall against Goldwater.
Ronald Reagan’s supporting speech for Goldwater launched Reagan’s political career.
Excellent historical data as always, TarheelDem. Am I correct that there was an ideological split that cooled Republican support in the general election? Or am I totally confused between elections as I was referencing Anderson?
Not cooled. Moderates rebelled at the way the convention was railroaded and sat on their hands. Anderson was in 1980 and sucked from the Democratically leaning swing voters.
That’s what I mean by cooled. Perhaps frosted would be appropriate.
Don’t particular care. Racists gonna race-bait. It’s not worse than his welfare ad, that’s for sure.
Nice empty way to change the conversation from Todd Akin, er Paul Ryan, er Romney’s taxes, er Romney’s foreign trip, er Romney’s taxes, er Romney’s taxes. And to pull Rush and the gang behind his campaign.
“Under my moderate Massachusetts governor exterior and moderate (and no surprisingly US Chamber of Commerce-like) views, there is a guy who would like nothing better than to join you folks somewhere in Michigan to put on our robes and burn a cross.” That kind of dogwhistle.
He’s not the guy you can have a home-brewed beer with. He’s the guy you can go cross-burning with.
That, guys and gals, is the secret handshake.
That’s what I think. It’s the first smart political move Romney’s made in weeks. His best–maybe his only–bet is to fill the air with subtle racism that infuriates us while sparking an ‘it’s just a joke’ from the beltway and a ‘ni-CLANG’ from Limbaugh.
I don’t see it as anything that stands out from the day-to-day of the RyanRomney/GOP campaign. I don’t even see it as calculatedly racist. It’s important as another view into his nature, much like Cookiegate, which I still think is the most vivid evidence of what an arrogant, humorless, low-intelligence being he is. It’s the kind of thing not very smart folks do when they’re trying, against their natures, to pass as one of the crowd: desperately try to “personalize” some newsbyte with a lame “joke” attempt they think will make them seem clever. The remark doesn’t prove his innate racism but further highlights his total incompetence as a politician or as a leader.
Only Romney could come up with something this lame as a defense: “This was fun about us, and coming home. And humor, you know — we’ve got to have a little humor in a campaign.” The “humor” he imagines is just another blip in the straight line of Romney laffs that starts with the fun of assaulting a fellow student in prep school. Fact is, a humorless, characterless, dimwitted bully would make an even more disastrous president than even a subliminal racist. At least some racists have been able to turn around — not in the cards for Willard.
Like Obama’s joke about the dog on the car? Did you see an Obama campaign spokesman calling Romney’s joke “gutterball politics” while referring to Obama’s dog joke as a Light moment” at the end of a long speech?
Leftist hypocrisy is the eighth wonder of the world…you’re losing, and you know it.
November 7th!!!!!
story is true and we know it is true because Mitt Romney himself told said story. The birth certificate allegations are false and are meant to question President Obama’s legitimacy for office.
An equivalent joke by President Obama would be something like and here’s Michelle and no one has every questioned if she was my only wife.
Perfect equivalent.
Was it Truman who said: “If they’ll stop lying about us, we’ll stop telling the truth about them.”?
Ezzra Klein addressed what had been niggling at me since I heard it. His take was that Romney is not racist, nor was the ‘joke’ meant to be racist.
Instead, Romney was subtley talking about priviledge. The priviledge he enjoys. The priviledge his class takes as their due and the priviledge that the Romney’s of this world are never going to willingly open the door to what Obama represents…to him.
Talk about class warfare! I came away feeling that Romney was segregating all of us and it was the worst dog whistle I’d heard yet.
Exactly. It’s like saying “You’re gonna vote for that guy? He can’t even walk through an airport without the cops following him.” Haw haw haw.
Pathetic. Obama initiated vicious personal attacks…Romney (thanks to Ryan) finally found the balls to respond to Obama’s smear campaign…
Let’s Do It!
Actually, your comment provides me with a good opportunity to say how I feel about Romney’s joke. And that is that I completely agree with the Obama campaign:
If you think embracing the conspiracy theorist, racist, or chauvinistic elements of the Republican base truly means that Romney has ‘found [his] balls’ then I both question your judgment and feel sorry for you that you ended up with a candidate who doesn’t truly believe these things and is only saying them to earn your vote.
Sorry, we both know Romney does not embrace the birther philosophy, nor does he expect anyone to interpret his joke as embracing it…
This has to do with the arrogance and disrespect continually displayed by Obama and Biden and Stephanie Cutter and Debbie WassermanSchultz et al.,,
Your arrogance and bravado has elicited the same in Romney…no racism, and you know it!!
No, we don’t both know that. I don’t think he believes it, but his joke makes it clear that he is embracing it. If you don’t think that him saying this:
is a clear wink and a nod to the birthers in the party, then it is obvious that your qualifications to post political opinions online end at the fact that your eyes are on a monitor and your fingers are on a keyboard.
Sorry, we both know Romney does not embrace the birther philosophy, nor does he expect anyone to interpret his joke as embracing it…
Ah, is that why there are eight birthers speaking at the Republican convention, and why Romney went out of his way to hype Donald Trump’s endorsement.
Oh, but Mr. Etch-a-sketch says he’s against it this week. Gee, that’s nice.
Name one “vicious personal attack” initiated by Obama. One. One. One. Name ONE.
Can’t do it, can you? This is why you’re a troll.
Obama initiated vicious personal attacks
Were you born two weeks ago, or do you just assume everyone else was?
What an idiot.
He was also talking about white privilege.
“Nobody’s ever asked me for my papers. I was never pulled over for DWB. Nobody ever claimed that I benefitted from affirmative action. [wink wink nudge nudge]”
I feel like saying, “How about your taxes, asshole?”
Rich, privileged, clueless, suburban rich kid piece of crap.
No personal attack there!!!
Hilarious!!!
Facsinating…you guys call Romney and Ryan all sorts of names…Booman calls all Republicans (except Dick Lugar and Olympia Snowe) stupid and/ or crazy…Obama makes a joke about Romney’s dog…and Romney’s joke is racist?
I’ve been posting on this website for three years now…if you truly want to be objective, compare the level of vitriol…
You guys are truly pathetic!
(1) We are not running for President. Romney at last report is.
(2) The birther nonsense should have been repudiated strongly by the Republican leadership and shut down.
(3) What Romney said wasn’t vitriol, it was a subtle reminder of a whole host of charges make over the past three years. It was a pandering dogwhistle to the birther faithful–Donald Trump, Rush Limbaugh….to cover the fact that Romney never was a conservative, just a chameleon. And to cover the fact that he ran for governor of Massachusetts as a liberal and governed as a pro-business moderate. It isn’t racist in itself except by use and repetition. More seriously, it is a direct pander to those who promote negative and discriminatorty racial stereotypes.
(4) Likely Romney would in a non-political context shun such a cheap shot.
(5) Romney’s treatment of his dog is indicative of his character. The furor of President Obama’s birth certificate is indicative of the character of the current Republican Party.
Shows what a dick he is (as if we needed further confirmation of this), and that he has no problem with a little racist humor. Just a swell guy.
“A Dick”…no personal attack there!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oavMtUWDBTM
I think your record player is skipping, you might want to check that out.
Shorter Romney: I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white! I’m white!
Oh, wait. That’s not shorter, is it?
Good use of logical argument there?
What me? Use a personal attack? Never!
That was intended as neither a logical argument nor a personal attack. It was, instead an accurate summation of the intended appeal of Romney’s statement. And the entire nation, conservative and liberal and indifferent alike, knows it.
Ironically, not only didn’t I attack Romney personally, but nobody outside his immediate acquaintances can, because none of the rest of us have any idea who he is personally. All we have is a long career of self-contradicting policy statements and marketing campaigns. But that record, and those public images and campaigns, are fair game. One of the reasons so few people have any doubt about the intent of Romney’s statement today, and how it was received, is that Romney, his campaign surrogates, and large numbers of fellow Republican leaders have been pulling more and less subtle variations of the same racially based attacks for four years now. Because, at least among the Republican base, both polling and elections have proven that they work. Draw your own conclusions.
Sorry Geov, but you are dead wrong.
Your liberal race baiting is absolutely disgusting…tea partiers are not racist…e believe in self-reliance and small government…the fact that you interpret those ideas as “racist” means that you are racist!!! You don’t believe that blacks can’t take care of themselves!!!
Disgusting!!!
I know I am biased because I live in Atlanta, home of Herman Cain…but he is uniquely qualified to put race-baiters like you in perspective…
Oh … Even though he’s black, he’s a racist!!
Never said Cain was racist – don’t put words in my mouth (or assume I’m a “liberal,” whatever you think that means). And my mother lives in Powder Springs (you know where that is?) and I grew up in South Carolina, so I assure you I know exactly what white racism in the South looks like. And what the Tea Party looks like. And the overlap, which is extensive.
A large number of Tea Party adherents (who just happen to be 99% or so white) are, by any reasonable definition of the term (starting with the extensive public polling over the past three years), personally racist, and vote accordingly. But more importantly, the policies they support are consistently, institutionally racist.
To give you a full list would require writing a thesis on the entire TP movement since it was hijacked by GOP money and Christian fundamentalists from its original, libertarian-leaning roots. (Which oozed with white privilege themselves, but tended not to have as much of the personal racial animus as their successors). In fact, I defy you to name one Tea Party-backed policy that doesn’t have the material effect, on average, of worsening the lives of non-white persons.
From crashing the economy to the social safety net to the culture wars to removing regulations on corporations to voter suppression to civil liberties to the foreign policy fantasies based on killing as many brown-skinned people as possible, you can’t do it. You believe in “self-reliance [sic] and small government” when such policies suit the interests of the economically powerful, and in using big government power to pay off cronies and interfere with individuals’ lives (war on women, drug war, civil liberties, border enforcement) when that suits you instead.
Your preferred policies do not, consistently, favor either smaller government (look at Ryan’s pre-2009 voting record as a random example) or greater personal freedom. They do consistently make non-white people’s lives worse. Work it out for yourself.
I have no idea what your personal racial beliefs are; nor do you know mine. But I know what the impacts of your preferred policies are. And I know what kind of people are most likely to be attracted to such policies. And they’re the people Romney’s joke was meant for today.
Racists.
Wrong!
Small government policies favor ambitious, creative individuals, regardless of race.
White privelege? Do you work in the real world?
I started with nothing..,donated blood plasma to pay for groceries in college…
Started a business after working for other guys with poor ethics…now I am an evil one-preventer…my COO is a woman (voted for Obama in 2008, is now voting for Romney based on the unbelievable bullshit regulations required by blue states like California and Connecticut)…my number two managing partner is a black guy who served 11 years in prison on drug charges… he’ll make at least 400k this year…he made 11 bucks an hour before he came on board..
Your “white privelege” story is absolute bullshit…anyone on the front lines of wealth and job creation knows it…we need character and ambition and talent…race, sex, religion, sexual orientation ARE NOT RELEVANT!
Start a company in the real world…them tell me your “White Male Privelege” bullshit.
Mass Dem? I thought you lived in Atlanta?
Wrong!

What personal attack?
You use that term to mean “anything someone says that I don’t like.”
Maybe that’s why you hallucinate them so much.
How do I feel about the joke? Meh. The better question is “How do I feel about Romney?”
Before the joke: a dick.
After the joke: no change.
Another reference to “dick”…no personal attack there!
Have you guys actually looked at the language you use about Romney?
Romney’s pissed about your pathetic personal attacks…hence the joke…probably was thinking about Obama’s “dog on the roof” joke…
Here’s why you’re really pissed…Romney and Ryan aren’t going to lay down and take your bullshit like McCain did…
Game On!
Seems like you entered the wrong blog.
We’re petrified.
You’ve done your thing. Go collect your pay from GPS Crossroads.
Done what thing?
I come onto to this blog primarily for entertainment purposes…as a radical right-winger who works a lot of hours, with lot’s of stress, including mundane things like ensuring there is enough money in the bank account to ensure that employees’ paychecks don’t bounce…
I present, as far as I can see, the only alternative opinion on this entire blog…y’all call me a “troll”, and the host continually alters the site to prevent me from posting comments, forcing me to continuously adopt new user names …
What are you afraid of? Why can’t you abide one lonely voice to challenge your worldview? Why continue to attempt to prohibit my comments? I thought y’all believed in free speech, in the free exchange of ideas?
This is your idea of entertainment? There must be better ways of spending your hard-earned time away from writing paychecks for the hired help than this.
Maybe you could hire some kids to bury you up to your neck in the sand next to an anthill. Or, better yet, maybe you could rent a stall at the next Burning Man festival and stage a self-crucifixion: that would satisfy your apparent masochistic urge while also feeding your martyr complex. You could even post a sign saying “the hateful lib’ruls done this to me.”
And best of all, it would only take a fraction of your time, leaving lots left over to, you know, help out all those “small people” who depend on your largess.
What a hatefull comment!
I love you anyway!
I got news for y’all…Liberty For All will always contribute to this site for as long as it exists…even contribute funds to it’s continued existence if needed…but I will not be shut up!!! Ever!!!
Funny, I was actually thinking about how much you reminded me of Liberty For All. I didn’t realize you were the same person.
That being said, I do hope you stick around, and I also think you’re being downrated unfairly in some instances. As I’ve mentioned, I don’t think you generally provide any convincing arguments, but I also don’t think you’re being personally vicious to other commenters, which is usually the only reason the ban-hammmer gets unsheathed.
Thank You!
So why aren’t you entertaining? Or is this another wingnut Newspeak attempt: boring and empty =- entertaining?
I had thought and argued that BHO releasing his long form BS was done so in an untimely manner, because I thought it better to wait until the repubs picked their Fuhrer, and voiced their opinion on the matter. If BHO had let the issue perculate for a while longer, and allowed it to stay alive and in the news, there could have been a more negative reaction to his not buying it from those frothing over it.
According to PPP’s survey, 51 percent of likely 2012 GOP primary voters believe that President Obama was born in another country (which would make him ineligible for the presidency). Another 21 percent say they are “not sure” if the president was born in the United States. Or to put it another way, 72 percent of the people who will be choosing the next Republican presidential nominee are either birthers or birther-curious.A mere 28 percent of the GOP primary electorate responded, correctly, that the president is a natural-born American citizen. [See editorial cartoons about the GOP.]
As it stands though, the release kinda killed the issue for most in terms of importance. And because of those numbers, I’d say he did what he did in an effort to be “one of them”, in an ass-kissing kinda way.
Most important in considering it at the time, was the choice the nominee would be confronted with — appeasing the base or eroding the support he might get from the wafflers.
He’s obviously decided to appease the base as was my hope, and only slightly lessened the potential damage with the “joke” angle from the waffler crowd and sane republicans, assuming they understand the birther/racism connection and care about it. It may be read meat and represent the day he finally recieved full acceptance from his base base as a result, but I think we’ll all eventually be thanking him for “the full monty” this represents.
His attempts to appeal to the base have now taken on a particularly disgusting turn. He really is a sad individual, grasping at anything/everything in his pursuit of being seen as a real conservative. With certain, ahem, documentation of his own in rather short supply, he is hardly one to attack a valid birth certificate.
Romney’s father, a true moderate, was a better man and a better Mormon, in this atheist’s opinion.
George Romney told the truth and it killed his Presidential bid. Mitt determined not to make that mistake.
Yaaaaaawn! Not funny, rather childish and bit desperate. No big deal in the greater scheme of things. If that is the biggest thing Obama fans need to concern themselves, then it’s an exceptionally boring campaign.
It is indeed an exceptionally boring campaign. But not because of the MEGO policy wonkishness usually associated with the words “boring campaign”.
Alexandra Petri put it better than I could:

For some reason this whole conversation brings to mind a great movie Glory Road that deals with the fight and determination it’s taken to get us this far. If you haven’t seen it, do. It’s a true story, the trailer gives you a hint of its power.
This looks to me like a knee-jerk reaction to PBHO’s “dog on roof” comment from last week, done hastily, in anger, and sloppily. I would bet there was some pushback from a couple of the advisors in Romney’s campaign, or at least a rueful head shake or two.
This puts Romney in Palin territory. It’s cheap, stupid, and totally beneath the dignity of someone aspiring to the highest office in the land. In other words, it’s typical of the leader of the modern Republican party.
It was certainly declasse.
Booman, do we have a sockpuppet – mass dem and gw1777/6? and since GW says he’s been posting here for 3 years, does that mean they’re both Liberty for All?
In fact, our resident troll has just admitted it:

in a churlish sorta way.
all that exercise he claims to get …or maybe it’s steroids…appears to have caused some rather severe cognitive dysfunctions.
Don’t forget Jane1966!
Yes.
Watch the video.
I was no joke and no one laughed.
They applauded.
No surprise
Nuff said.
You Lie! There was mostly laughter.
No lie.
Don’t believe me? Post the you tube video and share your evidence with the class.
I would but I already watched it and heard how the crowd responded.
Dude….I saw the video!!! They laughed…it was a joke!!! Comic relief for Romney. Accused of hiding money overseas and killing Joe Coptic’s and being either a liar or a felon.
You didn’t hear laughter? Really?
Then post it.
I saw it too. They applauded. It wasn’t meant and it wasn’t received as a laugh line.
Not saying there weren’t a few smiles in the crowd as they applauded though. Not much different than when your favorite athlete makes a nice play.
A 4 for honestly embodying Joe Wilson – too funny.
