It’s interesting to see which Republican senators voted for disaster relief for the victims of Sandy. It’s not hard to understand why David Vitter of Louisiana, Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker of Mississippi, and Richard Shelby of Alabama supported the relief. Their states have been ravaged by hurricanes and/or tornadoes in recent years. Richard Lugar, Olympia Snowe, and Kay Bailey Hutchison are retiring so they don’t have to explain themselves to the Tea Party. Scott Brown wants to run for John Kerry’s Senate seat. Susan Collins and Dean Heller just might be decent enough people to have to done the right thing without self-interest playing much of a part in it.
Still, most Republicans voted against any disaster relief for the Mid-Atlantic. That is because they are assholes.
Ct, NY, and NJ, blue states that send more in taxes than they receive back. Why help them out. Assholes indeed.
The states that were slammed by Sandy have been supporting red states with their taxes for decades. I really think it is time to stop sending more federal money to these red states than they pay in taxes until they at least acknowledge that fact and maybe even say thanks.
Oklahoma has gotten plenty of federal disaster relief after tornados, and will get plenty more in the foreseeable future so I don’t know why ….. wait, oh, yeah, Coburn and Inhofe are assholes.
Don’t forget Mini-me and Richard Burr. God forbid anything happened to the beaches of North and South Carolina. So yeah, Burr and Graham are asshats too.
This is what Burr would be voting against:
Plus the bill is poorly written (on purpose?).
This allows opponents like the Club for Growth to charge that funds could be used on the Gulf Coast, for example. “Could” and “would” are different, but when you’re making an ideological argument ignoring those differences helps your argument.
Imagine the amount of time and effort that could be saved if journalists and pundits would stop trying to over-analyze things and just come to this evident conclusion.
It’s like the old Chris Rock thing about kids shooting up schools – And everybody want to know what the kids was listening to, what kind of music was they listening to, what kinds of movies was they watching. Who gives a fuck what they was watching? Whatever happened to CRAZY?? What, you can’t be CRAZY no more??
Well, whatever happened to BEING AN ASSHOLE? You can’t be an asshole no more?? Ladies and gentlemen, your modern GOP!
Rubio voted against relief? Of all the states in the Union, Florida seems to need help almost every year.
The rest of them will be whining for drought relief any day now. I say, fuck ’em.
true that.
Does this still have to go through the House or has it already passed there?
Still has to get past the Republicans in the House:

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnd the first comment on that story reflects the GOTP mindset in all its patriotic glory:
Plus more posts whining about how the bill’s jampacked with pork so it must be defeated.
Of course, Republicans always use government to help out their political allies an punish their enemies. I wish Democrats would do this more often but not in cases like this.
