I’m back and I see that I was unfortunately correct about Mitch McConnell winning reelection in Kentucky. That’s a damn shame. The only real news so far is that Senator Mark Warner of Virginia is in a dogfight with Ed Gillespie, which literally no one saw coming. The folks over at Daily Kos Elections tell me not to worry about Warner, but what does it mean for the rest of the night?
The Daily Kos Elections folks also think that Charlie Crist is in great shape in Florida despite being behind in the reported vote.
If you want to speculate about the other races, like in Georgia or New Hampshire or North Carolina, go right ahead.
Update [2014-11-4 21:14:5 by BooMan]: I guess you can start worrying about Mark Warner, now.
As I predicted – Mark Pryor lost. Might not even have been close…they declared the race as soon as polls closed.
I think people better think long and hard if they feel Hillary Clinton will bring back these Appalachian / Deep South states back into the fold – I don’t think it’s going to happen. Not a chance.
Technically, Democrats don’t need those states to win the WH. But it doesn’t do any good for a DEM POTUS to be loathed in those states.
NH – 17% reporting, Sheheen 54.7%
NC – 14% reporting, Hagan 52%
They just called the race for Hassan. Have to think Shaheen holds on – I can’t see how blatant carpetbagging in the vein of what Scott Brown did would be looked upon kindly.
Called for Sheheen.
Brown could try NY — they don’t seem to mind carpetbaggers as much.
It’s Democratic carpetbaggers that we don’t mind here in NY.
Has a Republican tried? Brown might do really well against Schumer. Might have better luck running against a man instead of a woman.
he should run against Cuomo!
We are fucked.
Too early to say that. I do honestly think that there are a lot of idiosyncratic factors playing in some states. Mark Warner has a much closer race than anticipated in what was thought to be a safe race. I’ve heard whispers that OK-Gov could surprise – and no one was even talking about that at all. In Florida, Patrick Murphy held on easily, and we picked up FL-02.
I think it might be a bit of a mixed bag – but if anything, I still feel comfortable with my calls so far, although I think GA-Sen might go to a runoff…very much depends on how AA turnout comes in (and Nunn is also a bit low on the white % of the vote to get over 50%).
Sadly, he was right.
Will Oscar be changing his name to ‘Oscar in Loserville?’
Lot of big talk from KY Dems this cycle to be beaten within the first…five minutes.
I’m of course devastated that Lundergan lost after nurturing and exploiting racism in Kentucky (she was a delegate to Obama’s convention!) rather than making any effort to address it, let alone correct it in even the smallest way.
Democrats need to stop being cruel to the President. He can take it, but he really shouldn’t have to from “his own side.”
Oscar worked hard to get out the vote. Never denigrate those who actively work for deeply flawed candidates running against incumbent evil fuckwads.
Amen!
Actually, I’m looking to move. Fucking hillbillies.
I feel you, man, and I didn’t want to be unduly harsh.
But still, wow. You were promising a selfie from the victory rally, what did you think you were seeing?
Tough, tough night for the people hoping the polls were skewed against Democrats.
I never made it outside of Louisville proper – things looked great from here (and in this campaign I stayed at the grunt level so i wasn’t privy to internal polling). I totally underestimated how much hillbillies hate that Kenyan Usurper – relatively safe Democratic State Hose seats were lost and the Democrats almost lost the state House for the first time in 100 years. I also underestimated how willing people are to lie to your face about who they’re voting for – we significantly under-performed in the city as well. I know this much – the next POTUS will be a White male, nominate Hillary at your own peril.
luckily Martin O’Malley is running already.
Don’t bother looking across the Ohio. Its just as horrific up here tonight. “Go west, young man” still applies I guess.
btw met a DFA guy here who’d worked on Shelly Yoder campaign
ugh…Obama may not be as smart as Bill Clinton, says Chris Matthews #Analysis #Sigh
Democrats lost statewide in Arkansas and Kentucky. Last thing I want to hear is about how awesome the Clintons are in bringing back southern Democrats to the fold.
It’s the 2010s, not the 1990s…
Because Clinton’s campaign stumping for Grimes and the incumbent Democratic Senator in Bill’s home state did so well?
Or because Obama has yet to roll over and support everything on the Congressional GOP wishlist as Bill did?
And Clinton’s home state just elected one of the House impeachment managers as its new governor.
Figures
Chris Matthews may not be as smart as … a pet rock?
Boo…this is our THIRD election together.
I’m focused on watching the end results of the early races in an effort to ascertain if the polling bias against Democrats, especially incumbent Democrats, continues.
Crap! Gillespie is not going to hold, unless a bunch of late ballots come in from rural VA and not suburban DC.
Can’t imagine how anyone could vote for Gillespie. OTOH does VA vote in anyone (DEM or GOP) that isn’t somewhat creepy?
Had a good Congressman in the ’70s named Fisher. A Democrat. Actually talked to constituents and asked their opinion on legislation. A good guy. Got swamped by some Bible-thumper in the next election.
Michigan reporting in here. They’re now calling the gubernatorial race for Snyder(R), but Peters(D) wins the Senate. Neither are much of a surprise, but there you have it.
Really not getting how people could vote for Peters (D) and Snyder (R) when there was much right and nothing wrong with Schauer.
Snyder isn’t as scary on social issues as most Republicans are these days, so he’s riding good marketing and the fact that Michigan is, generally, in better shape than it was when he took office.
, on the other hand, did not run a very competent Senate campaign, and she got smoked because of it.
Whoops, that last sentence should have started with “Terri Lynn Land”. One of my Chrome extensions interfered with my post.
People are fucking idiots.
Extrapolating voting for VA…2013 voting was higher than 2013.
Warner is underperforming Terry Mac, but just barely…what in the hell.
2013>2014. Sorry.
I almost walked out when I had to vote provisional, too. Glad I didn’t now.
Georgia is not completely in; can’t tell yet how it’s going to fall. Most of the small counties in North Georgia that were expected to go for Perdue are 100% in. The critical turnout areas will be Fulton, DeKalb, Richmond, Chatham, Clarke, Muscogee, Chatthoochee, and a band of small counties across east central to southwestern Georgia.
They’ve called NH for Shaheen?
Media are declaring South Dakota without have any results posted at the South Dakota Secretary of State’s web site.
Exit polls must have exceeded “disastrous margin of error”.
Oops! The fix was in, I guess, but they jumped the gun.
No surprises in Oklahoma.
Fallin and Inhofe re-elected.
James Lankford takes Coburn’s seat.
I’m now think a 9 seat pickup in the senate. Better than fundamentals.
Snyder and Scott re-elected. OMG.
Ugh.
Walker too.
The Huffpo live map is showing Tillis edging over Hagan at 49.1-47.2. Cue cursing and muffled screaming at my house.
http://elections.huffingtonpost.com/2014/results#CO
My only hope is that Mecklenburg County has only 65% reported, and it’s leaning Dem. C’mon, Charlotte!
This night has pretty much gone as badly as it could have. Wow.
And now Scott Walker. And Joni Ernst. OMG. I think that Drinking Liberally is going become a lot more popular.
Bloodbath. Hagan in trouble too.
Well, the good news is that marijuana legalization is winning in Oregon. This will make the next two years easier.
My Governor – Quinn of Illinois – Lost to a Romney wannabe.
For those who didn’t vote..
the 53 million dollar man already told your azzes that he doesn’t believe in the minimum wage, and that the half-million who got access to basic healthcare because of the expansion of Medicaid WOULD NOT have gotten it under him..
when he comes for you…STFU and take it.
Gotta say, you had me somewhat hopeful about governor’s races. This is a rout. Bleh.
And there goes Iowa.
Worst part is, it’s barely past noon here. I have to stay conscious of this crapburger for the rest of the day.
Thom Tillis. Wow. Well at least he’s not the Speaker of the NC House anymore. Probably someone worse.
I agree. At the very least he’s out of NC. My thought when I woke up this morning was: how far can we fling him? I hate to see who the legislature is going to replace him with, though.
But winning at only 49 percent, though? I don’t remember even Helms’ races ever being quite this close.
Looking at the county totals, I don’t see evidence of GOTV at all in the states in which it was said to be intense.
But Greg Palast had an article in Al Jazeera about 27 states using a program called CrossCheck to cage 7 million voters. If there were lots of people who suddenly weren’t registered a few months after having voted in a primary, I hope that they come forward.
Otherwise, I might have to think that 50-60 percent of the country has lost their minds.
Look.
It’s not enough to just get out the registered voters.
The Democratic party needs to actually be the liberal, Democratic party it is supposed to be, otherwise, 70% of the people under 30 are going to continue believing their vote doesn’t matter…because in a lot of ways, they’re right.
Grimes wasn’t disqualified from being a Senator because she refused to say who she voted for.
She should be fucking disqualified from not saying that of-fucking-course she voted for Obama, because Obama and her are members of the same party, and Democrats are better than Republicans.
When you have to fucking run away from being a Democrat, then young people are going to ask themselves, what does it even matter?
Neoliberalcons are Republicans with a D after their name.
Fullstop.
Senator Cruz just pointedly suggested, twice, to a distracted Wolf Blitzer, that it would be premature to affirm his loyalty to McConnell’s leadership in advance of the “upcoming conference.” Raised eyebrows anyone?
That would be almost as good as if he’d lost to Grimes. USians are going to thoroughly enjoy watching the US Senate being run by lunatics. The open question is if one is promoted to the WH in 2016 or do they stick one of their governors in there until Cruz is ready for his close ups?
The base was made promises the party never intended to keep.
