Whether the following is the whole story or not, it seems to be basically unassailable:
[Speaker John] Boehner, who capped his career with Thursday’s address by Pope Francis, met with a handful of the most conservative Republicans after the papal address to lay out his plan to fund the government. But those rebels continued to agitate and threaten to force a vote at sometime in the near future to vacate his speakership.
A believer in the institution, Boehner decided to walk away on his own terms rather than relying on Democratic support or becoming the first speaker to lose the gavel midterm.
I somewhat anticipated this in my recent piece “Bring the Republican Schism to the Fore,” in which I made two prescient observations. First, I said:
In this environment, there isn’t much about the mood of the Banausinnen that is compatible with the leadership of John Boehner and Mitch McConnell, so it’s natural that the Republican congressional leadership should succumb sooner rather than later to some kind of vicious political challenge from within.
For the Speaker, this could be sooner than most people think.
I wrote that two days ago.
I also wrote, “Boehner would resign rather than preside over…a coup against his own party,” by which I meant that he wouldn’t consent to give away committee chairs or other leadership roles to Democrats in return for their support in him keeping his gavel as Speaker of the House.
The immediate news here, as reported by the Washington Post, is that Boehner traded his own scalp for the ability to fund the government.
Following Boehner’s announcement, House Republicans said there was agreement to pass a clean spending bill to avert a government shutdown. Several members of the Freedom Caucus, the conservative group which led the revolt against Boehner’s leadership, said they will now support the spending bill without demands to defund Planned Parenthood attached to it.
“The commitment has been made that there will be no shutdown,” said Rep. John Fleming (R-La.).
In other words, what remains of sanity prevailed here, just for the moment, but the cost was obviously high and possibly catastrophic.
The rumor is that Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California will replace Boehner but I will begin to believe that when I see it. There’s basically nothing about McCarthy that would alter the impasse between the sane people and the lunatics. It would certainly represent an empty victory for the conservative nut-jobs who forced Boehner out, and either McCarthy would have to run things much differently or he’d be in Boehner’s shoes within weeks.
More on that later…
So will leaving 10/31 be considered a trick or a treat?
So essentially what we have here is that all of the cages at the zoo will soon be unlocked and the doors swung wide open. We are finally to the point where the lunatics are going to officially run the asylum.
Gee….wonder how THAT is going to work out for all of us?
Good call, BooMan. Nice analysis. I have to hand it to Boehner, though, he was tremendously loyal to his Party. This article about him was touching: http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/john-boehner-in-twilight/2015/09/25/124fc54a-6399-11e5-8e9e-d

That level of devotion is admirable. Frankly I hope the man finds some peace in his retirement.
“The immediate news here, as reported by the Washington Post, is that Boehner traded his own scalp for the ability to fund the government.”
I’m no fan of John Boehner’s, but I feel some gratitude to him for this.
“Nothing became his life like the leaving of it.”
Don’t spare him much gratitude — the debt ceiling will happen after he leaves.
Bingo! That’s why Boehner is happy to be going. Hard to see how the ceiling gets raised. Consequences will be devastating if not done.
There are few if any actual conservatives left in the leadership of the Republican Party. It’s basically a combination of reactionaries and Dominionists.
Most of the actual conservatives left in Congress are Democrats.
Interesting take, Bearpaw.
I’ve been reluctant to call the TP Repub conservatives because conservatives are interested in the welfare of the Republic. These turkeys could care less about the Republic.
Interesting calculation on the part of the crazies. They gave up on what could potentially end up being a loser for them (govt shutdown) in 2016 election for control of the House for the year before the election. Thus they can stoke the crazy for six months and potentially boost the fortunes of Cruz (or less appealing Trump), and if that doesn’t work/catch on, they can retreat to never mind during the last three months before the GE when voters are paying more attention and avoid being tossed out.
Honest question, Marie, no snark: How much more stoking can you get than what has been going on for the last 3 months?
Probably a lot. Boehner hasn’t been out there continuously on the public stage with a flame thrower. They likely suffer from the delusion that they have a winning hand, but Boehner didn’t play it well enough and they want to unleash their innuer Trump.
Since they can rely on the placebocrats to not point out what is in all of those bills they pass in the House (like ending Medicare’s guarantee of health insurance for those 55 and under) there doesn’t seem a downside to this.
Now, if they had a real opposition party then this tactic would be a disaster for the GOP. But you can say that about almost any thing.
Steve Scalise is gunning for majority leader.
Kevin McCarthy, Pete Sessions, Jim Jordan (recently from his Planned Parenthood victory).
Spidey sense says Jim Jordan. Says Sessions is now too moderate. Tea Party ascension unless the “traditional” Republicans have a hissy fit. Presidential primaries put likelihood of the old stylers (and that is the Newtniks) digging in their heels against crazy.
Welcome to the Russian roulette Congress. After Boehner is gone, they might put Planned Parenthood back into the chamber again and spin the cylinder.
A higher profile for Scalise isn’t going to be helpful for the GOP caucus.
Jordan is a relative newbie and hasn’t/doesn’t hold a leadership position. Normally wouldn’t have a chance. But in the year of “screw experience and expertise,” he might be their guy.
Oops — McCarthy and Jordon were first elected to the House in 2006; so, both are relative newbies.
McCarthy is one of the reps who sleeps in his office. He will be in line to be the leader of the free world and he has not left his office in 9 years.
Might be Kevin McCarthy is still trying to hold out from the pod people, the ones who took over D.C., the ones who took over his home town of Santa Mira a few years back.
He’s from Bakersfield. It’s been a GOP stronghold since 1952.
My understanding that Santa Maria has always been Republican. Old school Republicans similar to what until recently populated Santa Barbara.
Do I have to explain every classic movie reference?
Kevin McCarthy. Hiding out in office. Pod people. Santa Mira.
Good one. Got the “pod people” reference even though I haven’t seen that very scary movie since I was a kid, but stopped there because it’s so easy to view the GOP crazies as pod people. Would never have recalled the names of the lead actor and fictional town.
One of my favorite sci-fi classics. Santa Mira name used for the real town of Sierra Madre. KM had a delightful cameo role in the Invasion remake in the 70s, a clever, quality movie in color starring Donald Sutherland, Leonard Nimoy, Jeff Goldblum and Veronica Cartwright. Trying to remember name of female lead, popular actress in the 70s.
Brooke Adams. She was dreamy. Before “Invasion…”, Adams had just starred in Days of Heaven, another fine film. Even subprime Malick is top-notch filmmaking.
And yeah, I want you all to think that album cover.
In addition to the folks TarheelDem listed, I’ve also seen Jeb Hensarling of Texas mentioned. None of them would be an improvement (in my opinion) over Boehner, which is not an endorsement of Boehner at all.
Let me throw one more name out there for your consideration: Greg Walden of Oregon.
Boehner Presser:
“Zippity Doo Dah. I’m out of here. You guys respect the institutions, will ya.
He has always been a brave man. Never a tremor in his hand. A picture of sobriety. There is no reason except cowardice that he cannot control his far right. Too scared to call them out in front of the nation. Get your priorities in order you would be amazed at the results. The truth. Just the facts. Too late now Deano.
I thought they were just going to pass a CR until
Dec.
If so Government shutdown coming just in time for the war on Christmas
Alas, poor Boehner, the poster child for “Be careful what you wish for; you might get it.”
We’re going to see the limits to “That government is best, that can’t.” as an operational principle.
Pelosi has 188 votes up her sleeve, thus the power to choose the Speaker, if she chooses.
Interesting times.
That’s not gonna happen. The R caucus will decide on the unified candidate. The election between that candidate (222 votes) and Pelosi (180 votes) will result in an R victory. They will not allow themselves to be divided.
dataguy, I don’t know what rock you’ve been under for the last 6 years, but they are already divided:
here 2015 ,here 2012,here 2012, here 2010,here 2011
There is little or no uniformity between the factions of the Republican party. The ONLY thing holding them together is prospect of each side winning out over the other. Schism is imminent
Resistance is futile.
I don’t give a crap about that stuff. What will happen in the Speakership vote is one R against one D.
If you disagree, let’s have a bet.
not how some people are speculating. I don’t think the pope’s speech moved Boehner. I think Boehner achieved his life goal of having the pope address congress and said I am out of here now that I realized this dream of mine.
If John Boehner made the Republicans less repugnant, I say, set those jackasses free. I think that having these bastards drool in public may just hasten their extinction.
They’ve been masturbating in public for a while and haven’t paid for it yet.
Nice call, Booman! this is why we would pay you the big bucks if we had them!
The crazy keeps coming
