I was reading in the last cafe how much stuff you have to do today.  You know the saying, “Slack when possible.” 🙂

        • CabinGirl
CabinGirl on October 4, 2007 at 6:47 am

It is really humid here this morning.  And misty.

I cannot wait for the weekend so I can escape my slides and presenters who can’t be bothered with sending their slides until the last minute, when they find that they are unable to email them because the file is too big!

ARRGH…I just woke up to the above scenario, further complicated by the European location of the presenter (ie, next-day Fedex of the disk won’t work.)

Anywho, are you off for your walk this AM, or waiting for more light?  It seems really dark here this week too.

          • AndiF
AndiF on October 4, 2007 at 7:04 am

Sorry about the work problems. I’m sure I can think of something to distract you, though. 🙂

I’m still walking in the morning but I have to start out in the near dark which is a little tricky in the woods. I’ll probably switch to noon time walking next week — it’s either that or walk with a headlamp.

            Morning, dear.

Give my (lack of) dancing ability, it would be more horrifying than distracting (though I guess that is distracting). But I was thinking more in terms of talk, food, and maybe baseball.

And I’m off into the dark. See ya — really. 🙂

It’s Monday night here, and I’m into the long-slog of editing my magazine.  I’m hoping to have it to the printer Friday morning – which I probably can if the last few submissions come in by late tomorrow (damn politicians).

The weather here has been marginally warmer, though much drier.  Not that I can get out into it much until the mag is done – although Luna and I did manage a good long walk in the bush earlier today.  I had to get out, or go cross-eyed.

      • AndiF
AndiF on October 9, 2007 at 6:04 am

When I flew back into Raleigh the other day I saw one of our big lakes which branches off into a dozen or so “fingers” and all of the fingers were dry.  It’s still classified as “exceptional” drought and they’re expecting a dry winter as well.  I’d love a cold, rainy, blowy day.

The critically endangered Orange-bellied parrot has just had a huge boost to it’s wild population.

The Orange-bellied parrot migrates every year between Australia’s states of Victoria and Tasmania.

The 140 individuals who were left in the wild were today joined by 80 captive raised birds.  The survival rate for previous for releases of captive raised bird have been good, although they’ve never been released in this great a number.  This is literally one of the most endangered birds on the planet, and this release is major shot in the arm for the species.

Maybe, if I’m very lucky, I’ll get to see one, one day.

What a beautiful bird – hope you get to see it – but a total population of just over 200 sounds precarious indeed.

I would share with you, but we’re needing all we can still get.  It surprised me it lasted so long.  Lately whenever we get rain, it lasts for only about 30 minutes.  We’re out of the exceptional drought in our part of the state, but a good bit of the state is still in it.

    Hi everyone,

I saw Alice’s comment yesterday about us old timers and lurking. . .so I thought I’d step in and say howdy.

Weather here in SE Idaho is gorgeous. . .Fall always is!  My life these days is “interesting.”  And interesting can mean anything from exciting and unexpected to WTF?

I stop by to read most days, but don’t always have a lot to say so I just drop some 4’s on you all and wander off into my star fields.

Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying this great season.  The political season is so laughable that I don’t give it much notice these days.  Maybe after we have actual candidates it will change some.  Nothing Bush and Co is doing will change for the remainder of his time. . .just one continuous crime spree it seems.

I still call and write the Senators and Congress critters, sign the petitions, and whatever else I can to make a difference.  I just don’t have a lot to say about it all any more.

But on the wonderful side, I’m having a grand time connecting the dots between star systems.

    Love ya all
    and big hugs
    Shirl

On the “nothing is more constant than change” side of things, Diane is shutting down Village Blue at the end of this month, so if any of you wanted to stop by and thank her for her efforts or just say Hi and goodbye, now would be the time.

You can follow the link in my signature line if you want to.

Hi Shirl.  I just happened to stumble across my name here, and must stop my habitual butterfly flitting between flowers to say hello and it’s always good to see you.

God help me, I have no idea what I said about lurking.  Diane knows I’m a regular at it.  I’ll miss her village, will have to start lurking around yours now.

Nothing much to say about the rest of the world – the show goes on, doesn’t it?

Nothing but peace and love here in the frog pond, hardly any conflict ever, and you and Diane did set the tone for us.  Thanks.

            Hi Alice

Thanks for the kind words, but I’ll defer to Diane, she was the strong instigator of the tone and civility here, I just happened to agree with her.  She did an amazing amount to help populate this site, she was a tireless promoter and gather-er-in-er of folks from other sites.  Practically dragged me by the nape of the neck to be an active participant here even though I was a first day member.

Yes the show goes on, and on, and on, and on and on. . . . . . . .ad naseum.

Glad things are well with you

            Hugs

This is a Pink Fingers orchid, Caladenia carnea, next to the tip of my pinky finger for size comparison.

And this one, which I only found today, appears to be a Nodding Greenhood orchid, Pterostylis nutans.  There’s only one so far, so I’m hoping a few others will come up somewhere near it so I can make a definitive ID.

Last year, I think we identified this one as a Tiger Orchid (although someone here helpfully renamed it the “Fetal pig orchid”). Now I’m leaning towards ID-ing it as a Leopard Orchid, Diuris pardina.

We have three greenhoods and three colored orchids (all pictured above) flowering at the moment.  And lots of other plants are blossoming as well.

        Hi Andi,
We sure do.  Taking off 3 days next week – going up Sunday night, back Wednesday (then I head back to New England on Friday to check out colleges with oldest asklet; any good suggestions for someone who wants to study international relations and language?).

AndiF on October 11, 2007 at 7:12 am

          That sounds wonderful — I’m jealous. 🙂

My advice on colleges is to always pick a school whose atmosphere you (the prospective student) like — for an undergraduate degree, that is more likely to affect the quality of your education than the academic rep of professors. Of course, looking for a school that has an international campus where you can study for a semester or more and an atmosphere you like would be a combo.

Why?  You live in the forest…

Thanks for good advice.  We’ll check out BC, Tufts and Bowdoin on this trip,  McGill in Montreal seems to be the current favorite.

AndiF on October 11, 2007 at 7:38 am

You’re going on a very long weekend to a beautiful place — what’s not to be jealous about? 😉

Part of the reason I developed that attitude is that I worked for several years at a school that catered to older, returning students and a large percentage of them were people who went to schools that simply weren’t right for them and their unhappiness led to a very unsuccessful experience (usually quitting or flunking out).

Speaking of those woods I live, time for my walk. Ta.
