Hey! That 4 looks good on you!
but does anybody care?
We operate better in dim shadowy corners.
Since every time I open up a fresh new cafe on Saturdays you guys use them up as fast as can be.
I should have picked Sundays.
But then we’d be using up cafes as fast as can be on Sundays.
Maybe. Missed you at last night’s soiree.
We were out at an IRL soiree. Dinner, dancing, a really cheesy swing band, the whole bit. A little rough, given that we’re also just back from New York.
How’ve ya been?
Dinner and dancing on a Saturday night. I’m impressed.
I’m good. You were in New York for quite a while?
About ten days. Half at SIL’s house in the ‘burbs, and half in Manhattan, all with kid GRs in tow. Quite a mix of family, friends, business, and sheer tourism. Good trip, but glad to be home.
Good trips make me appreciate home even more than bad trips. I mean, on a bad trip of course home would be better. But liking home better after a good trip really means something.
I care, for a little while.
How are you this evening?
Things are pretty good here, if I don’t think about going back to work tomorrow.
It has been a great vacation and I hate for it to end.
How are you doing this evening? Was Jim on vacation last week?
We had vacation back in March. I wish we had it later when the weather is nicer.
::studiously avoids subject not to be thought about::
Have you applied to the library science program?
I have been so bogged down with papers to grade that I haven’t had a chance to finish the application. The deadline is July 1st, so I am okay. It’s ironic that the very reason I want to stop being a classroom teacher has hindered my move towards leaving the classroom.
I’m all caught up right now. It is kind of a miracle.
This is nice. Looks kind of familiar.
is just what people need on a sunday night. plus it was too early to use the neon sign.
They just finished uploading — so don’t go off to bed yet … π
as last night but I’ll be around for awhile yet.
Click each for larger. Note that for the top pic-D70s it took about an hour to figure out how to set the colour myself b/c the overhead lamp was distorting it.
Taken today w/ D70s — this is as close as I could get w/ the lens.
Taken 2006-04-20 w/ my beloved and easy to use and totally non-learning-curve required Canon. π
What kind of Canon? I have an old AE-1 that needs a little cleaning. I can’t wait to use it again.
This would be a good example for the camera shop. How long did they give you to be able to return the lens?
I can understand that this is kind of a downer but it is only the first day.
Hell — I’m just happy that I got the lens on the body! It’s a lot to figure out all at once: the lens stuff, the camera body stuff, etc. I just now figured out how to shut the flash off.
I’m prepared — I know it’s going to be a long road!
at least you don’t have to rush, though Jim is pretty much convinced that you’re going to want a true macro lens.
(I have no idea how to turn the flash on or off on the D70 so you’re way ahead of me.)
If you were at 70mm and as close as you could get with the Sigma, then I think you are in the market for a macro lens. The two lenses I emailed you about have been around for donkey’s years so there should be a good selection of them in the used market.
By the way both shots are, as usual, great.
And you figured out how to get the color you wanted in an hour; it took me months.
pretty damn awesome! Don’t tell me you have these blooming already up your way? I almost envy you the joys of having a new cam, but the learning curve might drive me around the bend, so I’ll risk that “gateway to serious addiction” that dada called my wee lil Fuji the other night … π
I was just sayinn g’night to dada down below… Did you get my email I sent you today! There was this spam blk thing that came up, so not sure it went through.
Those are indoor flowers (part of a bouquet I got for my bday last week…) I wanted to test the two cameras using the same flower. It’s going to be a l-o-n-g process to figure it all out … π
See my good night greetings down below π
Yes, email came thru… I just had to authorize you and put you in the address book, so you won’t get those again. I was wondering about that flower… looks like a scabiosa? or am I wrong? Though I think some of those are pretty, I have never been able to bring myself to plant anything with the word “scab” in it… some weird linguistic aversion, I guess. LOL.
Have a restful night, I’m not up too late tonight because I’m wiped out from all the digging and hard work I did out in the sun today!
for the “Gilmore Girls” fans around here:
Gilmore Girls Losing Creators
NEW YORK — The popular WB series Gilmore Girls will have to continue without the husband-and-wife team that has been its creative force since the beginning.
Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino said they will leave as executive producers following the end of this season, its sixth. The show’s production company said Gilmore Girls will continue next season with Dave Rosenthal, who has been a writer-producer there, running things.
Just thought I’d pass it on…
They shouldn’t mess with success. So what if they want to do other things? Don’t they know they are slaves to their public?
That tears it. There’s no way it will be the same without her.
Is that show still on tv or in reruns??
right now it’s on the WB but it will be on the new combined WB/UPN network next year.
Can you tell me what night so I can make sure the TV is left off.
Boo hiss!
Good night.
Why is Omir an idiot, you ask?
Well, we went to the zoo this afternoon to spend some time with the family. Me, Mrs. Omir, my daughter, my daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters, one of whom thinks the lion she saw is “Goliath” from Jo-Jo’s Playhouse. You can tell from this that she is pretty young.
Anyway . . .
As we were heading out the door I grabbed my camera. I’m thinking this would be a very nice day to take some pictures to post in the Cafe. So we head out to my daughter’s car, I go to turn on the camera . . .
Nothing. The rechargable batteries had discharged inside the camera since the last time I charged them. And of course since it was a nice day I didn’t have my jacket on, and guess where the spare batteries were?
Aaaaaaaaaargh.
And the worst part of all was that I found the perfect shot for the cafe. It was one of the ubiquitous ducks that roam the zoo grounds, in the shadow of a tree and visible through a very low fork in the tree. I wanted to get a shot of that duck behind the tree because I thought it would allow me to use a great caption:
CROUCHING OMIR, HIDDEN DUCK
But instead I will have to settle for trying again later.
that the inventor of the RoboRater is not perfect.
should never have to suffer but should live his days in light and glory.
Oh the stories I could tell . . . and then there are the ones my family could tell.
“Not perfect” doesn’t even begin to cover it.
That’s okay Omir. We had beautiful weather here all week and I usually forgot my camera when we went out for walks. And when I don’t post a photo, Andi threatens me with…
Marmotdude! Where has the little guy been lately?
He made an appearance just the other day in one of NDD’s puff mushrooms (don’t ask).
Well, it’s time for me to call it a night. I have to be up early tomorrow and go to work. Have a nice evening everyone.
So the fear of reprisal for not having a picture of Andrew is making you run away?
if you haven’t yet heard “dear mr. president,” you are missing out. big time.
it reminded me a lot of this beauty.
Was it you who was the Lolita fan Andi? Or was that Wilderness Wench?
I read the book many years ago. I liked it but it isn’t one of my favorites. It appears it was WW.
If you are looking for a discussion about it, you might be interested in this post over at Pandagon.
Thanks for that link — it validated what I was feeling as I was reading.
She seems to be wearing a lot of clothing…whatever happen Sabrina the Teenage Witch??
Okay, now it’s really good night. I wonder if this one is is all wrapped in a silk blanket tonight.

Thanks for all your help today Jim — Good night!
Really cool shot there, Jim! Don’t believe I’ve seen a paw paw before… they must be around here somewhere in the woods, but being city bound as we are, we don’t get out to the woods often. Even though Chris’ folks have several acres of wildlife preserve on their property out in the country… haven’t been down in the woods there yet because they all came back last Sunday with ticks… ewww! Not going down there until I’m properly armed with repellant… I wouldn’t be surprised to find one of those down there though.
did I miss anyone. Late as usual…
I’m still around sort of — mostly I’m reading.
Thought the Sens played this afternoon…how’d they do?
Sens lost – series tied 1-1. Saw that the Avs won. The young guy Wolski who had such a stellar game, played in the ontario hockey league last season — saw him play often.
on him. They just brought him back last wed. and added him to the roster for the playoffs. I think he’s only 20…stays healthy and plays like he did in G1, he could be awesome.
Sorry ’bout the Sens, IMO, they should beat Tampa at the end of the day.
More of a passive interest?
my son-in-law is a huge fan, so I get a lot of info…kinda like B-Ball…don’t pay much attention to it until playoffs start.
Inability to watch sports is one of the few liabilities of not having a tv.
You seem so connected/gadgety, that surprises me …
A meticulously constructed facade.
I have other ‘gadgets’…mostly cameras, stereo/sound equip., and too many guitars and ‘harps’…I haven’t had a telly hooked up for 10 yrs, and have only been using the internet for @ 2.
I’m slowly dragging my ludditian ass into the 21st. C. :{)
Those sound like much better gadgets than a silly tv π — cameras, musical instruments …
Do you still play?
the guys I used to play w/ have all moved, so it’s mostly just noodlin’ around…just enough to notice how rusty I’m getting and to keep my favorite acous. in tune.
It’s something I don’t think you ever forget, you just lose your calluses and technical skills if you don’t play enough.
I have a 12 string acous., which I haven’t played in such a long time…
I’m gonna have this image of you in my mind sitting out in your courtyard, w/ the sage burning, Bu at your side, while you pick away at your guitar. That’s a good image — much better than gadget-y π
I’m off to bed now — early for a change lol! Sweet dreams dada.
Good night, Olivia! Sorry I got here too late again! Enjoy the new cam, and thanks for the email today! I actually got email from someone I like! Not like all those marketing things the garden companies and my bank sends me … LOL.
Sweet, floriferous dreams!
pretty slow night, everyone’s wore out…me included.
Be well, catch ya on the flip.
Peace
Know what you mean there, my friend. I spent 6+ hrs of hard labor out in the garden today, digging up dandelions and a rogue flower that’s trying to eat the garden (and is very difficult to dig up!), so I’m on the waning side here too. Did you see that tulip close up I posted in your honor last night in the late night thread? If not, I’ll post it again soon… I just had a feeling you would enjoy its, well, sort of psychedelic properties… LOL.
Take care, and see you soon!
Night, sweet dreams
Peace
I’ve never developed a taste for Nabokov, I gave him up after slogging thru Ada. I find his writing to be a bit manic and overwrought…maybe it’s the translations.
I’ve managed to avoid Nabokov up until now and I was prepared (indeed expected) to dislike this. For a long time I thought all of his work was available only in translation and, for me, translation is usually a barrier to enjoyment. Then I found that he had written it in English. My American arrogance couldn’t really believe he could write “American” english. And the subject of the novel didn’t really interest me. So I avoided it.
But he does write American english! Far better than many American authors. I find I’m enjoying his use of language tremendously. So I was completely wrong. And happy to find that out.
I would rank Nabokov’s english as close to the best I’ve ever read, and it almost makes me want to learn Russian just to see how amazing he is in his native tongue.
I agree, I find myself re-reading sentences and paragraphs just to savor his use of words.
You can let me know about the russian once you’ve learned it π
I know the feeling. I have spent several evenings savoring his prose. It’s godlike. And english was like his fourth language.
So I see:
I feel so deprived growing up in a family that only conversed in one language.
if Ada was written in English…IMS, it post dates Lolita. I thought, at the time, it was a translation.,,perhaps not.
It appears that it was written in English.
This was not out of the ground yesterday, and appeared this morning! A very eagerly awaited new bulb that we put in last fall… it’s going to be awesome when it blooms… anyone have a clue what it is?

After an appropriate period of head scratching, you can consult the photo properties and find the answer… hehe.
Hey dada, you still around?
And you’ve got me hooked b/c I just read about this plant in The Book! If this plant is what I think it is, I’m gonna want you to tell me everything about it and capture lots of photos!!!
LOL!!! I also emailed you this shot earlier, with a link to where we got it so you can see what it looks like when it blooms. We’re really into discovering and growing Arums now … we also planted 3 “Lords and Ladies” types which look kind of like a twisted, sexual Jack in the Pulpit type flower.
Believe me, we’re going to document this baby day by day, so you’ll see the whole cycle. Btw, what was the title and author of that book? I think I want to get it, it sounds hilarious, given the short blurbs you’ve posted. Now go to bed, young lady! See you tomorrow, no doubt.
… I went and checked email!
The book is Anatomy of a Rose: The secret lives of flowers by Sharman Apt Russell … It’s a strange little book that is more prose/poetry mixed w/ some science.
The thing she says about this flower goes way past sensual … LOL … she says the male organs produce heat, and can be hot to the touch! Anyway, I’ll have to look it up and relate it to you later. There was also something about the different odours the male and female parts produce!
And on that ah note, I’m off to bed! Definitely sweet dreams LOL!
For any froggies venturing in here in the wee hours …

This is a shot looking up into the flower of the Fritillaria imperialis I’ve posted a couple of times the last few days… a different perspective I think is cool. π
Nice pic IVG. I enjoy the garden talk/pics here; spring is in the air.
I enjoy my simple english daisies, and am looking foreward to seeing what happens with the poppie seeds I planted last week…If I cut the grass today, and pull some weeds, I will call it a good day!
