Given the recent flap over Rep. Todd Akin’s remarks, you’d think that Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona would know better than to talk about rape. The irony is that Senator Kyl has botched his analogy. He says that the Cairo Embassy’s statement deploring the anti-Islamic movie was akin to telling a woman she deserved to get raped because of the way she dressed.
First of all, the statement was made before the assault. It should be compared to what a woman might say in an effort to prevent a rape, not to what someone might say to her afterwards to justify it.
Secondly, by criticizing the Embassy for their statement, Jon Kyl is essentially saying that the were attacked because they showed weakness. And that is the equivalent of telling a woman that she deserved to be raped because she was alone at night without any pepper spray.
So, in trying to make a rape analogy, Kyl not only failed, but he committed the very sin he was trying to decry.
Good thing he is retiring because he is an idiot.
It’s like everything reminds them of rape … except for, you know, actual rape. That’s when the hemming and hawing and prevarication starts.
Not to mention the constant fascination with having things “shoved down their throats.” It’s like they have that phrase tattooed to their wrists in case of blanking out mid-sentence.
Most guys are more focused on protecting the cornhole. But the GOP seems to live in mortal fear of mouth-rape. I have not yet figured out why there is this difference.
Well, there goes another keyboard. And here I’d promised myself not to be sipping beverages at the computer anymore.
It’s because they, themselves, are assholes. So attacking the mouth is a two-fer.
They just WANT something shoved down their throats. They are so deep in the closet that they don’t even realize it themselves.
EVERYTHING involving the Republicans and sex is distorted and mangled.
Yes, indeed, Senator Bonehead (R-Az), what Cairo should have done was not show “weakness”, but instead put out a statement saying America supports its Christianists’ right to intentionally and grievously insult muslims and Mohhammed! And that Egyptians better just lay back and ENJOY it! That would obviously deter the protesters and protect the staff. Strength! Strength!
Retiring moron Kyl has a great future as embassy head under the coming Rmoney regime, haha.
Kos had an excellent piece collecting all the (deadly) attacks against American embassies and consulates during the Cheney years (not including Iraq and Afghan). Suffice it to say they greatly outnumbered attacks in the Obama years. But “strength” is what indubitably prevents embassy attacks, yessiree.
Again, our nation is saddled with an irreversibly braindead faction which now approaches half the citizenry. What can one expect but to have to listen to the “leaders” of this faction, braying asses like Bonehead Kyl?
Anyone espousing this “perceived weakness” line is a grandstanding buffoon. Whatever happened to “respect the office”? Don’t answer, I know.
“The attacks on our embassies & diplomats are a result of perceived American weakness. Mitt Romney is right to point that out.”

There are known knowns, known unknowns, unknown knowns, unknown unknowns, and then you have your Don Rumsfelds.
And, you know, the Cairo embassy was only in that position because of something that someone else did (the video that may or may not have incited the protests in Egypt).
Somewhat off-topic, but there appears to be something weird going on in Missouri Polling.
Rasmussen is showing a dramatic change in the presidential polls. To go from +12 to +3 is (or SHOULD be) concerning to any campaign.
Of course, this could just be an outlier (that stuff does happen), but this is about the time that Razzz usually begins dropping the Republican house effect. I wonder if Akins is having an outsized effect of reverse coattails? I don’t think this would include the Middle East debacle.
Probably an outlier. Every 1/20 polls is going to be outside the 95% confidence interval. This is probably that one. Also Rass only polls 500 people, which on the low side.
I’d wait for confirmation.

I didn’t think Jon Kyl’s idiocy was still in question. Man Eeegee has been making the case for years.
I think you’re way overthinking this, Boo – and put far more thought into it than Kyl did, which was the problem. His response was tribal: they’re saying our guy was not only tactless, but wrong. So we’ll take the heat off of him by repeating what was wrong (do that enough and it’s true!), doubling down on the tactless, and throw in an analogy, any analogy will do, that’s flamboyant enough to draw attention away from our guy’s alleged misstep. It’s about that complicated.
Respect for the dead, the truth, and America’s best interests have absolutely nothing to do with it (and in fact just get in the way). It’s all partisan politics. And they really think most Americans think like they do on this stuff. Ladies and gentlemen, your modern GOP.
Sometimes I am convinced that Steve Benen and I are sharing at least part of our brains. He posted this six minutes before I posted.
Kyl would be well advised to learn from Fred Thompson whose wisdom is limited to delivering scripts and then being escorted out of the building.
Off topic but I was checking the listings last night and saw a title I thought was Paranormal Whiteness and I thought they were referring to Mitt. Then I realized the title was actually Paranormal Witness.
You can make a donation to Rich Carmona and help us rid the Senate of at least one idiot* this November.
*Jeff Flake is just as much of an idiot as Jon Kyl
