I probably would be willing to argue that there is no such thing as “good” theology,” but I would never dispute that there is plenty of bad theology. One way to look at this is that it’s possible to try to solve a problem for which there is no correct answer. This could be considered a giant waste of time and a hopeless effort. Yet, if you can’t add and subtract, your efforts are doubly-doomed and kind of embarrassing, too.
That’s how I feel when I read about Mike Huckabee’s theological justifications for doubting evolution, opposing gay marriage, abusing refugees, imposing the death penalty, paying people next to nothing for their labors, and eating pork barbecue.
Once reason that Mike Huckabee doesn’t get more respect is because he has views on religion that make reasonable people cringe.
Another reason is that he’s turned himself into the new Sarah Palin. He’s just a nasty piece of work and not at all the kind of guy you’d like to have a beer with.
Also, he doesn’t drink beer.
I know that IOKIYR, but it seems worse than windsurfing.
Let us know if he has a beer with anyone. His brand of Baptists are flag-waving teetotalers and (ineffective) anti-gambling. Not that it affects the behavior of the PBR and Southern Comfort drinkers who fill the pews and the casinos.
But he’s also big on the second-chances theology for himself but not for others.
Watch.
Not one of the establishment but a useful media idiot.
His brand of Baptists are flag-waving teetotalers and (ineffective) anti-gambling.
Does that mean no bucks from Adelson or will Israel unite them?
A chunk of Palin’s support came from guys that wanted to fuck her and women that wanted to be her. Didn’t care what she said. Doubt Huck can fill those platform shoes.
Yeah, plus no starbursts.
I must have missed that pork barbecue post. Pretty funny. The theological answer would be that the restriction on pork was part of ceremonial law applicable to Jews in the Old Testament. Such ceremonial law was not applicable to Gentiles in the New Testament.
I’m waiting for progressives to render judgement on the 30-40% percent of Democrats who still hold objectionable religious views.
I’m a progressive who appreciates theology. When one strips away the bullshit, the core stuff is really good. This includes Judaism, Christianity and Islam. But it’s not enough to read the holy texts, at least not English translations. One has to really wade into the inner meaning. Then it lights up.
It’s unfortunate that the depth of those teachings has been mostly lost to the modern age. Part of the fault is that religion has always been misused to control and manipulate. The vast majority of followers do not have an interest in understanding much. The exceptions are mystics such as the Kabbalists, Gnostics and Sufis of these faiths. Sadly, fundamentalists do not appreciate mystics. In fact, mystics have often been oppressed, tortured and massacred. ISIS goes much further, killing mainstream Muslims who don’t agree with them. But the Saudis have allowed the Wahabis to make their best efforts to wipe out Sufi culture. As an exclamation point, in addition to leveling shrines, they’ll often build a public toilet on the spot. Such people are not religious; they’re political and Machiavellian.
But you don’t drink 😛
Yeah, but I did.
Huckabee makes five or six (?) GOP candidates going after the moronically bigoted Fundie demographic and even in the Republican Party that’s too many pigs for the teats. These guys need to have an All In naked mud wrestling match, Winner Takes All.
It’s the only way.
Let’s just cut to the chase, Boo. Huckabee is a fundamentalist yahoo whose stock in trade is bible thumping and gross ignorance. It’s a travesty that anyone is taking this assclown seriously as a presidential candidate.
