Here we go again.  Week 2.  🙂

I’m back to waking up early every day again, though, which is nice.

    • AndiF
AndiF on August 10, 2009 at 6:11 am

And soon you will be back to getting the boys up early too, which they might want to debate the niceness of.

CabinGirl on August 10, 2009 at 6:29 am

Actually I think they’re both about ready to go back (minus the thouht of doing any, you know, homework.  The slowness of the economy has translated to slow times at Taco Bell, so CBtE hasn’t been working much, and CBtY seems a little bored too.

CBtE has big girlfriend problems this week…she went out drinking with her friends (which he doesn’t approve of and won’t participate in), and made out with some guy, and then told him about it.  Oy.

        • AndiF
AndiF on August 10, 2009 at 6:59 am

Yeah sometimes summer is a little too endless and the thought of some structure is kind of appealing. I really never minded homework either.

Ah the joys of youth. Poor CBtE, I wouldn’t be a teenager again for anything.

        • Second Nature
Second Nature on August 10, 2009 at 7:26 am

She is obviously trying to convey her awesome coolness to CBtE, and how much all the OTHER guys want her. I wouldn’t want to be a teenager again, either.  The boys were jerks, but at least they’re predictable jerks.  The girls are just sneaky and back-biting and mean.

          On that happy note…..

I’ve lost my son in Europe.  They missed their return flight because one of the boys had a sickle cell attack and spent 3 days in the hospital in Brussels or Amsterdam or somewhere, and now they’re saying they need to purchase full price tickets since theirs were non-refundable.  At $1000 a head.  And everyone’s parents are divorced and broke.  And no one has a working phone or internet.  Oddly, I am laughing and calm(ish) even though I don’t know what the hell is going on.

            Good for you, SN.
I don’t see how fretting would help, in any case.

I think youth & resilience will win out. This could turn out to be one of their most worthwhile  experiences.

      Good morning, CG & Andi!
      Reposting from old cafe.
      I like that image.

Something else I liked – went with some friends for an outdoors concert last night – risky business considering the recent weather – but it turned out great with a clear evening sky. Venue was the roof of the new Oslo Opera, it was the opening concert of the annual Oslo Jazzfestival – performing was Antony and the Johnsons w/the Opera Orchestra. The stage was on a barge right in front of the lower sloping part of the roof.

      Review (Norwegian) with some pics

It’s quite a building and I’ll have to take a closer look one of these days. Opened last year.

          From wiki:

The Oslo Opera House (in Norwegian, Operahuset) is the seat of The Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, and the national opera theatre in Norway. The building lies in Bjørvika, in the center of Oslo, at the head of the Oslofjord. Its builder was Statsbygg, a government-run property owner. The architects were the Norwegian firm Snøhetta who were also the architects of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (the Library of Alexandria) in Egypt.

      Hi CG –

Congratulations on your new job and getting to Week 2!

I’m scheduled to start my new job on the 17th – just when I was so comfortably
settling into pre-retirement. Oh well, back to the salt mines for the both of us.

Hope all goes well for you!

Hope you have a lot better time in Pittsburgh than I had (not being ensconced in a BCRoD ought to help).

Hot and humid is back here too. 🙁 We had a storms yesterday and then right after the last storm, the sun came out and it was just like someone pouring water on the hot rocks in a sauna.

They are still being held hostage at the Brussels airport.  US Embassy called me to say they were stuck at the Brussels airport and needed $3000 for return tickets.  Duh, I already knew that, but it would be very nice if you could intercede with the fucking airline on their behalf.  The kicker is that my son’s bank thought he’d be back in the US on Sunday and cut off his ability to use his debit card.  So I’m pretty sure they’re also starving to death.  Plan B: contact the Facebook friend who is a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter and whose husband is a US Senator.  Fuuuuuuuck.

    • AndiF
AndiF on August 11, 2009 at 5:17 am

Damn, that is a real horror story. Apparently the airline decided it could make up its massive losses by ripping off three teenage boys.

Also, sorry you’re up so early (worrying I presume).

      • Second Nature
Second Nature on August 11, 2009 at 5:18 am

        The embassy called at 3:30.

When I didn’t hear anything all yesterday I thought they were on their way home.  So I had a blissful 3 hours of sleep before they called.  🙁

        • AndiF
AndiF on August 11, 2009 at 5:25 am

What crappy excuse does the airline have for not letting them fly standby?

          • Second Nature
Second Nature on August 11, 2009 at 5:31 am

I have not been able to talk to the airline directly.  All of their phone numbers are bad.  So I have no idea what the hell their excuse is.  I suspect a lack of communication is at the heart of this…between the boys, the airline, the doctor, etc.  It would be helpful if I could actually speak to my son, but their phones don’t have international calling and it seems they have run out of cash for using the payphones.

          • AndiF
AndiF on August 11, 2009 at 5:36 am

            Jeez, what a mess.

Do you think the embassy might be willing to set up a call?

          • Second Nature
Second Nature on August 11, 2009 at 5:45 am

They’re not physically at the Embassy, but maybe through 3-way calling.  Not that I’d have anything helpful to say.

          • AndiF
AndiF on August 11, 2009 at 5:57 am

Haha!  I was worried that they were not sleeping and probably eating discarded food from the airport dumpster….turns out they are living on 50 cent baguettes and cheese.  Apparently the wine isn’t up to par.

They will be home tomorrow.  Yay!

    Good news SN.

We’re still having a drizzle-a-thon.  So steady that we’ve accumulated an inch of “rain” in the last two days.  The alpacas are mopping about in their soggy coats and the dogs are spending their days mostly asleep inside on their damp bed – until Lily gets bored and steals something or pesters her mum into a wrestling match.

The ducks OTOH, enjoy the wet weather.

The Northwest coast, where Imogen and I recently vacationed, has had 60% of their normal yearly rainfall in the last 11 days.  It’s good the drought up there has broken, but it’s been a bit hard on everyone, what with roads flooding and all.

    • AndiF
AndiF on August 12, 2009 at 5:49 am

Drought and then massive rain for 11 days — these extremes are really scary. I hope the flooding didn’t do too much damange so people will be able to enjoy the breaking of the drought.
