I saw a new side of religious fervor this week. I saw a type of militant power at our hospital.

This last week has been a real eye-opener for me.   As many of you know, my husband and I took our names off the rolls of our Southern Baptist church because they supported the Iraq War from the pulpit. They called us unpatriotic.    I thought that would be apex of my disillusionment with the religious community.

No, it was not the apex.  This week, while my husband was in the hospital I encountered something new.

Groups of young people roamed the halls of the critical care units, and they all wanted to pray with me.  I pray in my own way, and I told them no.  That led to their attempts to fill me with guilt over my lost soul.     I was very upset and rather sickened at their numbers.   More came along after they moved on.  One man came carrying a bible with a flag stuck in it.  He wanted to pray as well, I said no.   I then said are you a minister approved by the hospital, he said no, he was doing God’s work.

When the man who delivers our bottled water came he was very nice, he put the bottles inside for me, very kind.  Then he wanted to pray with me.   I said ok, and he did.  It was quite long, and very emotional.   Then he gave me a huge hug in the name of Christ.   I guess I should not disapprove, but it sort of bothered me since I don’t know him.

I was really not prepared for all those people roaming the hallways and wanting to pray.   It apparently happens all the time. I know the water delivery man meant well, but that is mixing his religion with my grief and my needs.  It is just not quite right.

Kamarck and her Third Way admonition to liberals irritated the heck out of me.

It has been a tiring week for my husband and me, lots of medical tests, sitting in offices.  Tiring, and just in no mood for a couple of the paragraphs I read in the PDF version, the full report.

Before I post the quotes that irritated me, I have noticed a lot of this lately.  This putting down of the “activists” in the party, calling them “liberals”, and admonishing them to keep their place.  It started in 2003 with the DLC memos directed to Howard Dean and his supporters….which we were.  They called us “fringe activists.”  Outrageous.

What a damn crying shame that our own party would stoop to turning the word activist into a dirty word.  Gingrich did that to liberal, and now our own party is doing it to anyone who speaks out against their right leaning policies.

Florida high school football game to have Special Ops parachute team, jet, humvee, tank.

This is a blatant attempt at military recruitment in Florida at a high school football game.   I think my Democratic senator should step aside.

I read this while I was eating my breakfast this morning, and I just could not finish.  It literally knotted my stomach that this is actually being lauded in a local paper by the political editor. Also, my Democratic congressman is the featured speaker, Senator Bill Nelson.  They are going so far as to swear in the latest group of recruits.

It is being presented in the article so casually, almost as a good and natural thing.   There has been no time to hear reaction to this, but I hope there most certainly is one.   This does not have to be going on at a high school football game.  I hope there is reaction to it.   The article has a sense of presumption that everyone will be impressed by this.   Frankly I hope others not from this area will react.   This may be going on everywhere for all I know.  It does not make it right.
