All of those players are known as true Yankees, a title that has eluded Alex Rodriguez. While he waits for another chance at October, Rodriguez added to his legacy by doing something never seen on baseball’s grandest stage.
He blasted three home runs in the Yankees’ 12-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels and became the first player to drive in 10 runs in a game at Yankee Stadium, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

It isn’t political, but it is noteworthy.
Who was the greatest Yankee of all time? Take the poll.
Booman–the Yankees?
One man, one vote for Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio.
New to this site, via dailykos.
56-game hitting streak, baby.
Little did I know– my vote too, BooMan.
But– not #23???
I voted for Lou. Let’s face it, Donnie was the best player we’ve ever seen (before he hurt his back), but look at Lou’s stats.
There needs to be a “none” answer for the quiz 😉
well who knew the key to breaking the curse was to break Ted William’s frozen head?
pretty harsh BooMan – though I guess I can accept it, because for once in my life, I think that Yankee fans finally hate the Sox as much as Red Sox fans hate the Spankees. The whole not winning thing definitely adds to the level of dislike.
because northeast baseball would be nothing without them.
I love Fenway too. Love your enemies, remember?
hmmm… i guess i could give that a whirl. how about I like New Yorkers, but not actual Yankees
I voted for Yogi Berra. I don’t like sports really of any kind but I like his metaphysically surreal quips. And I know Romanians who have worked for him and said he is a decent guy, if somewhat of a drunk.
I’ve noticed not just here and on DKos but a lot of eggheads like baseball. My own father is a disciple of the game and he used to be a nuclear engineer.
I’m told there’s a lot of intellectual stuff going on during the game but I haven’t really learned enough to appreciate it. Nor do I have the time 🙂
Why I bring this up is because of the reference that baseball is “America’s Pasttime” and I feel a lot better about my country when I think of that. It makes me feel a lot more hopeful on days when it seems the American populace is devolving into drug ridden cretins addicted to Entertainment.

Basically, I have a Brit or other foreigner as a long-term house guest. Each night we sit down and watch the Yankees. I explain the intricacies of the game to them, and they gradually learn the game, the players, their tendencies. They learn the roles of a lead-off hitter, a two-hole hitter, what qualities make for a good number 5 hitter.
They learn the tendencies of the manager…what he will do in certain circumstances, what his options were.
They learn what kind of pitch is appropriate in which count. And they learn to anticipate whether a pitch will be on the inside or outside part of the plate, high or low, or in the dirt.
I don’t know why I have this fantasy. I guess it’s just a desire to share some of my useless knowledge before I die.
I think this is why people have children, to have a captive audience for all of their acquired wisdom 🙂
The problem of course is children rarely listen!
