My Congressman is Norm Dicks. He was schooled at the feet of Scoop Jackson and Warren Magnuson. He also has the Bremerton naval base in his district. Dicks learned, from the best, how to deliver the pork:
“Overall, I’m very pleased,” said Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Wash., the state’s senior member of Congress. “These are realignments, and nothing major is closed. I’m thrilled we don’t have any real problems.”
Some small annexes of bases to close here in San Diego according to local news this morning. About 500 civilians laid off I think.
Navy Reserve Center Central Point: Closing, loss of seven military jobs.
Umatilla Army Depot: Closing, loss of 127 military and 385 civilian jobs.
Portland International Airport Air Guard Station: Realignment, loss of 112 military and 452 civilian jobs.
State total: Loss of 246 military and 837 civilian jobs; 1,083 jobs lost overall.
More job losses in an already shaky Oregon economy. Are we having fun yet?
Governor Napolitano was aggressive in her advocacy for the bases here in Arizona. All of the major facilities have been spared, but staff reductions have been recommended at various sites across the state, totaling 550 personnel.

Ricky (Santorum) is going to have some ‘splainin to do! I hope this is but one of many “nails in the coffin”, so to speak…
Oh, do let us know what’s said about him. Every nasty comment.
Heck, he’s done so many horrible things, I could write a series of diaries on him! Do you have any interesting tidbits you’d care to email me for inclusion?
Yup. e-mail me so i have your address handy… oh, did you ever find stuff on the cave bugs?
I have some printouts of the cave beetle stuff sitting here on my desk…(hangs head sheepishly)
Well, it’ll be challenging because it’s not inherently a “sexy” story. But what it could do to the ESA is incredibly serious. Thanks for all your work! Looking forward to it whenever.
NO WAY!!!
mostly minor realignments…
I’m really surprised (pleasantly) that Bush didn’t exclusively go after the blue states. That’s what his father did, mercilessly. He didn’t close that many bases, but virtually every one of them was in a liberal district. He did this deliberately so that when people complained, he could say “look, these people are against the military, but when you close a base they complain about that too.”
but then, Qarner is chariman of Senate Armed Services
and he still hasn’t announced how he is going to vote on nuclear option
not that either of those is supposed to matter
