I’m glad he’s ratcheting up the debate. But I also want him to make sure we account for, and have open supervision of, all the “ghost” detainees in secret prisons all over the world.
I sometimes wonder what will happen after 2008. We know that no matter what (barring some no longer unthinkable shinanigans from this White House) there will be a different president. But by that time, whatever shred of a reputation this country has will have been thoroughly destroyed, I believe. Which some feel will be a good thing, the mighty brought low and all that, as our govt has done some terrible things in the world over the decades. I’m not so sure it would be a good thing, though, not just for us, but for people in very bad situations who have depended on us to be the ‘light on the hill’ and so on. Even if the light was pretty tarnished.
One of the saddest things I read after Abu Ghraib and Gitmo torture came out was the fact that torture survivor workers in the US were fanning out, desperately trying to contact the people they’ve been working with that had come to this country to escape torture in their own… only to find that some of them (even ones that had been here a while) had reverted back to their original states of incapacitating fear at the news that even here they were not safe from torture.
Anyway, have we ever been in this position before, as a country, where we’ve been so thoroughly discredited world wide?
