The date marks the day of
the first meeting, in 1982, of the UN Working Group
on Indigenous Populations of the Subcommission on the
Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.
The UN General Assembly
had proclaimed 1993 the International Year of the World’s
Indigenous People, and the same year, the Assembly proclaimed
the International
Decade of the World’s Indigenous People, starting
on 10 December 1994 (Resolution
48/163). The goal of the First Decade was to strengthen
international cooperation for solving problems faced
by indigenous people in such areas as human rights,
the environment, development, education and health.
In 2004, the UN General
Assembly proclaimed a Second International Decade of
the World’s Indigenous Peoples through Resolution
59/174. The goal of the Second Decade is to further
the "strengthening of international cooperation
for the solution of problems faced by indigenous people
in such areas as culture, education, health, human rights,
the environment, and social and economic development,
by means of action-oriented programs and specific projects,
increase technical assistance, and relevant standard-setting
activities".
The Dag Hammarskjold library is a true treasure trove of information on human rights issues, and much more.
He was Mr. United Nations when I was growing up. Many wondered if he was assassinated.
they could find an abundance of atrosities here in the US….our own Native Americans…
I’m sure the world over is pretty much the same, you gotta get rid of the witness’ ; )

I’m wondering if this may lead to an erosion of treaties.
Count on it…it has never changed since the begining.
Strange choice of words.
Aren’t we all the world’s indigenous peoples?
This deals with mostly those peoples who have been disassociated from their lands, persecuted by the governments of their lands and those that choose not to become westernized, civilized cultures.
I believe one of the reasons that Bushco and his merry band of marauders want to destroy the UN is they are afraid that the American Indigenous tribes will one day be recognized as truly independent countries with sovereignty and made to uphold the many thousands of treaties that have been discarded over the years.
The US Government has not upheld its end of a single treaty that was negotiated with the tribal nations that were here before the Europeans. NOT ONE has been upheld.
Some of us are visitors from other worlds.
