[From the diaries by susanhu with photos by adastra added.]
My journey to Crawford Texas was extremely emotional for me. I arrived at Cat’s on Wednesday midday and I was pretty tired. Cat had hooked up with Code Pink and other Boomaners.
Photo: “Boomaners” JanetStrange, Tracy, and Cat (Brinnaine) in Austin before going to Crawford. By Rick (Adastra).
Cannuck brought over a whole car load of stuff to take out there. Two wonderful flashlights……one helped me read maps when my dome light went out and another that we turned on the lantern setting and is used to light the supper table at Peace House after nightfall so you can see what you are spooning up. MORE BELOW, with more photos:
With so much sweating going on a hunger strike wasn’t an option because we were losing too many salts and minerals with all the sweat. It is nice having a soldier for my husband who has been to Iraq because he gives one a very good description of what the cramps feel like that come from having plenty of water but no minerals, calcium, and salts…….I ate!
I got to meet Janet Strange at Cat’s and she showed me photos of her painting project in her kitchen. I had some photos of the bedroom with only the mustard on the walls. I did have a good shot of the lion’s head. I didn’t have any though of the red wash on there yet though. I have to dress my room again. Hang the blinds and put the window caps back up…..it looks pretty cool though when I turn the corner and that color hits my eyes. Rick took photos and does possess an amazing spirit, particularly since he had to share time with three very independent women talking about women stuff! He is a very cool guy!
Code Pink phoned and asked if we could give someone a ride from the airport who was with Iraq Veterans Against the War. Are they Crazy? Of course, load those veterans up! I waited until evening for him to arrive and him was Tim Goodrich, and him is also the fella who was about to make a speech at the Istanbul Tribunal when unknown to him they unfurled the banner with the photos of the children who had been killed or injured due to the bombing (Susan did a story on it and I thought that Tim looked familiar…..he was standing at the podium in the photo that Susan put up).
Tim was in the Air Force six months before we “went into Iraq”, but Tim was part of that huge bombing that took place before we even started asking the U.N. if they would mind if we kicked Sadams ass. Tim has been speaking about this bombing now for three years, but nobody really heard him or noticed him until the Downing Street Memo/Minutes. I asked him if that was hard for him to be running around speaking about all of that and not being heard or really taken seriously for so long and he said not too hard usually. What happened in Iraq upset Tim so much emotionally that he saved up all of his leave so that he could get out as early as possible. He wanted no part of this shit anymore!
Tim drove, funny dude asked to drive before he even landed….he acts just like my husband I swear giving us all these numbers and directions as to where to pick him up at the airport…….WE’RE BURNING DAYLIGHT! We head back to Cat’s and finish getting directions and I take off with Tim in the driver’s seat and I was too glad to have him there because I was beat and it’s midnight. We had to be there though if they were going to start arresting people.
We pulled into Crawford around 2:30 am. Finding Peace House was fairly easy, there isn’t much to Crawford Texas. We were pointed to a room off the living room by another protester who mostly stayed at Peace House and kept things organized there. The room had a table with a lot of T-shirts on it for the Peace House. Make a ten dollar donation and have a shirt. The room had a lot of floor space though. There was one gentleman asleep on the floor already, in the morning I learned that his name was Hadi Fawad and Supersoling has a photo of him up and he is a Cofounder of the Peace House.
Left: Hadi. Gentleman on right unknown (anyone know? — the photos aren’t all captioned.) Photo by Rick aka Adastra.
He also has a very hairy back but does not snore. Dear God help me through this! Sleeping on the floor and hairy backs and portapotties and I AM A VISUAL PERSON! Camping for me is a cheap motel with the door left open! I thought that I had two sleeping bags but discovered that I had brought only one…..RATS! I had a camp pad though that my husband had christened in Iraq and I thought it might bring me good luck. I gave the bag to Tim and I took a blanket that I had brought and the camp pad. They had a pile of old couch cushions and they were old and I was too tired to think about it and one became my pillow.
I awoke before dawn and discovered that Tim didn’t snore either. There was a really bad knot though in the sleeping bag cord and he decided to heck with it and had grabbed a loose blanket and one of those lovely couch cushions. I talked myself into going back to sleep until the house began to stir. I never felt homesick though or ever had that out of place feeling that usually comes from new surroundings. It was like home the moment I walked through the door.

Thank you for the debrief Tracy but more important thank you for going to Crawford. You and all who made the trip went for those of us who can’t. Brave woman we have been following your journey here at the Trib. You are setting an example for us and our children. People are setting up Camp Caseys all over the country.
Adastra sent me a LOT of photographs … i’ll process more (they need to be cropped, resized and some color-adjusted .. I’ll keep putting more up as I get them done.
TRACY! THANK YOU FOR THE REPORT! I’m so glad you’re home safe. Hugs to your husband and your son for putting up with your absence :):)
Good to see that you made is home safe and sound and now have time to write your fuller version of events, with pics…That’s a really nice one of you, Janet and Brin..Janet has the most gorgeous color of hair doesn’t she.
Oh Tracy it is so good to hear you made it home safe and sound. great pictures and I can see in my minds eye what you describe, so wish you were going to be there in a week and a half. I look forward to meeting Cat too. I am pretty sure I have talked one of my best friends into meeting me in Austin. I am keeping my fingers crossed she can get the time off. I am a believer in that I am in the right place at this moment and I am not meant to be in Crawford until the 26th. The incident with the crosses being run over last night is disturbing. I hope that is the end to that sort of idiocy. Thanks for the breifing. Hope all is well with you and yours.
HUGGGSSS!!!!! Tracy Girl, I can never be able to express my gratitude [and others from here] to you for doing this for those of us that couldn’t go!!!!
You and the rest are a shinning example of what makes America so great!
Tell us more about Cindy. What is she like and how is she doing? Who was it that did the bad thing to the crosses yesterday? Do you know?
Discribe more about the enviroment there both in real-time and ppl, if you would. What kind of ppl were the opposite in protesters [bush supporters]. What kind of press did you see there other tham Time of course…bs I have many more questions but will let it go at that for now.
have to run now,,,but catch up with you all later…
for going and for bringing what it was like to those of us who can’t be there. It’s made for some of the most enthralling reading I’ve done in a long time.
All of you who went to Crawford have been so good about sharing your experiences. I’m sure that I am just one among many who are very grateful for both the fact that you all went and that you were willing to let us join you vicariously.
or actually to be one, but this is one of those little pet peeves of mine. You are briefing us, not debriefing us. It might be said that we are debriefing you when we ask you questions, but the term debriefing is generally used to indicate a situation where you don’t speak unless spoken to, and I don’t think that’s your style 🙂
Btw, good briefing!
I took a nap to catch up on sleep. I will correct myself as far as brief and debrief.
boxers or briefs? 🙂
you don’t want me to debrief you 🙂
perfect debriefing briefs 🙂
Pink feathered briefs to be exact LOL
I know I know… some things weren’t meant to be feathered… or posted.
use debrief this way. Not your fault. Hell, not everyone is lucky enough to have been educated about this, as I was, by “The Man from UNCLE” 🙂
I don’t snore and I last time I checked I didn’t have a hairy back 🙂 But if I’m superduper tired, I do tend to “drool”. One could drown if sleeping with a ultra tired me. Maybe we can get a chance?? LOL
Great post Tracy thanks.
Now… it appears the San Francisco march is a grab bag of EVERY fucking issue known to man. Alas SF marches aren’t about unity or one message anymore.
So how the hell do I get my ass to Washington DC in Sept? I’ll try not to “drool”.
I think we need a BooTrib meetup in DC for the march, don’t you? And hot pink Booman t-shirts…
Great Idea! I have no idea how I could swing it. that’s a weekend so I can do that solo and the Mr. could stay here with the kids.
Tickets to DC… we can start showing lowest fares and share miles??? All I’ll need is a carry on backpack and I’m set.
I have to do this.
San Francisco’s march is done by ANSWER and it’s a Kmart Blue Light special of every damn issue.
I want to march to stop this fucked up war. To coincide wtih Cindy.
email me, please (cabingirl05 yahoo-you know the drill)…
Whooot!!!! discussing the logistics of flying me solo out to DC (hopefully my brother can help with airfare) and I’m in baby!!!!
Got the support of the family to do what I need to do.
I’ll email you Cabin Girl 🙂 Thanks
I slapped you an email just now. Can’t wait to hear from you.
Got it! I’m finishing after dinner clean up and bedtime, so it’ll be a little bit before I can respond!
I’ve been known to screw up and make typos – most commonly with emails 🙂
Now you are talking! I’m going, already arranged it with the husband person! I would love bright pink Booman Tshirts!
Do you want to meet up with Janet and me in DC, then? That would be great!
Must Do! I’ll give you guys my cell number and we will find each other there!
I know what you mean about the march being a grab bag. On Thursday the Communists showed up, we really didn’t care, they were anti Iraq war and we weren’t monitoring who could or couldn’t be there. The Peace House is for Peace plain and simple and Cindy is for Peace plain and simple. I don’t know if Emilio was a plant or if he is the real deal, he is charismatic and dogmatic if nothing else. He really went out of his way though to seek out us Military families and I’m not going to be surprised if he gets Gannonized by being recognized by someone. He did have a paper though, but he wanted interviews with military families really really bad and he wanted to over throw George Bush on August 24th and blah blah blah. I kept telling him, “Dude, your issues are not my issues and I must stick to my issues!” He kept insisting that everything was intertwined and I would respond that yes, in his mind they were but not in mine. All this overthrowing George Bush though and how crazy he was? My first thought was that he was a plant! He sure got his ass down there very quickly! I left one of his papers in the back of Cat’s car. Cat, go get that paper and give us the title of it so we can find out if it was just created last Saturday!
to something in the photos. That really sucks….no sleep and allergic to something, that is why my face is all red. I started getting over it the day I left. I AM ALLERGIC TO THE PART OF TEXAS THAT GEORGE BUSH LIVES IN, OR I’M ALLERGIC TO THE IDEA OF GOING NEAR GEORGE BUSH. I have to go to San Antonio twice a year for rod lengthening for my son and I have never broken out in hives like I did the day I arrived in Austin bound for Crawford!
If my brother can help me with tickets – I’m going to be in DC.
I’ll keep you posted. 🙂 I have have have have to do this.
Husband is behind me – and can watch the kids because school will be in (just the logistics of pre-bus – and after school) but he knows I have to go.
I’m starting to feel like I’m actually breathing!!!!!!
fuck… I’m crying again LOL
Stopping the war and the needless killing 🙂
Plus the SF march is done by ANSWER and I’m not too thrilled with their past rallies/marches… here’s a snippet of the email I got.

As a friend emailed about the above: “I thought there would be a march to end the war in Iraq… (snipped)- I think actions on the left always tend to lose their effectiveness when everyone takes every opportunity to fit every issue into every possible action…” really smart lady’s email 🙂 ——–
I couldn’t agree more. We need to keep this simple.
I totally agree about the International ANSWR things – they have unfortunately turned a lot of people off to protesting this war since the beginning. I don’t know about the S.F. march you’re referring to but do you know about the actions planned for tomorrow (Wednesday) evening all over the Bay Area? MoveOn is “sponsoring” but you can just show up at any of these places.I’ll be with my daughter at the Panhandle in S.F.
