What can you say about a kitten, born in evergreen shrubs by Wal-Mart and saved by a young woman who’s kept her Soviet flag since the 1990 Goodwill Games when she refused to root for the U.S. women’s great, all-star basketball team and insisted on buying the flag and rooting for the Soviet women’s basketball team? Or that that kitten is named “Ari,” after Ari, the capitalistic, free-market-driven, hilarious agent on HBO’s Entourage?
This is an OPEN THREAD — even for non-Soviets!
Ari, and his two brothers and two sisters, went to the Peninsula Friends of Animals shelter this morning. Darcy is so blue. She was particularly fond of Ari, but she already has two cats who’ve been cooped up in her bedroom while the kittens were socialized in the kitchen.
Ari is one cool cat! And your daughter sounds like a very kind and caring young woman. Kudos to you!
She’s really cool. She worries about every creature out there. A few months ago, a black and white cat started showing up at my back door, BELLOWING loudly for food! I’d feed him, and keep the raccoons away so he could eat. He was so tame, we were able to pick him up and take him to a veterinarian for neutering and vaccinations. Then we kept him in a large cage in my garage while we tried to figure out how to find him a home — the shelter was too full to take him. Crafty Darcy brought her boss by to meet him and, then her boss brought by his dog to see how the cat and dog got along. They were great together! So now, Willie — as Tom Bihn and his wife call him — has a wonderful home at their house with their dog Riley!
Now we have to find a barn home for the kittens’ mother. She’s not feral but she’s so terrified of everything that it’d be very hard for anyone to take her into their home. We tried for hours and hours to bond with her while we kept her in Darcy’s kitchen so she could raise and nurse the kittens. But, she will not come around. So, if we can find a barn home, it’ll be great. There’s NO WAY she’s going back to that hell at Wal-Mart. It’s just awful there.
Susan, what have I missed here…Can or will you be willing to tell me more of thsi story, that I presume to have missed out on…I do nto mean to be coy, but please what have I missed here…Tell me about your daughter and this cat…I missed something!….:o( I took this as something totally different…I am so sorry….I really want to know the story….
And thank you for the lovely compliments about both kitten and daughter :):)
What a beautiful cat! And look at his paws… he’s gonna be a big guy when he gets older.
If I didn’t already have 2 of my own, I’d snatch him up in a heartbeat.
And here’s Franklin:
Darcy put him on a free map she got from a Natioanal Geographic subscription solicitation mailing.
She just got this digital camera for work — I think she has a knack for photography!
Susan, frankly, I would rather talk about the kitten and where she found it and the life it might have had otherwise if she had not found it.
I would rather talk about the comment you had on the other diary yesterday about the coon. That really got to my heart. Since I am an animal lover, and the shape that our world is in today, I get much more solice from that …bs
I am depressed enough without this..but since you brought it up, I would like to think of it as, so an American cat can sit on a soviet blanket. What really changes??/is and should not be the question…it should be about all being alike in many ways. We are all humans..or there are cats everwhere that need love and compassion from whomever….:o)
am I being tooooooo open minded here? is my glass half full or is it half empty? Am I being tooooo sensitive or what!!! :o) Maybe I need a vacation…:o)
Not at all!
It’s like that link that Darcy sent me yesterday, and that i posted in the last open thread … there are all these wonderful Israeli animal lovers who are going to go into the abandoned settlements and rescue all of the cats and dogs, and other animals, who’ve been left behind … because their owners were forced out, or left them there.
They’ve received a promise from the Israeli military that none will be euthanized until they have a chance to rescue them and take them to their shelter.
Susan, I must admit, my shallowness of the original diary, left me so embarressed as to my comment.
I am so sorry….begging for your forgiveness, please….
I didnt know or havent paid enough attention to what your daughters name was. I just need mrre time here to read everything, I suppose.
BTW, I should have known better due to your appropriateness of your diaries.
Love toya Hon…and please accept my sincere apology for the snarkiness of my words….and yes I do need a vacation in the worlds worst way….solotary confinement to a whirlpool and sauna and great food and wine and lots of R&R for this one…
I’m confused! (Nothing new about that.) I just read your first comments as your being blue today, and that that’s sad.
?
No matter. I didn’t see a hint of snarkiness in what you wrote.
no need to try to read my mind..I get confused to trying to read it as well….:o)
I am just very stressed today as to the happenings around here with work etc. also, I am on clear liquids in prepping myself for a colonscopy…needless to say, I am not looking forward to this in the least!!!:o( Had to find coverage so I could do this and not be on call..and all that goes along with this mess. I really do need a vacation and do not see one in the foreseeable future…Oh hell yes I am depressed…:o) Sorry for the pity party here. I promise to change this right away.
But you folks tell me it is gonna be fine with my colonscopy…PLEASE!!!! I am not looking forward to the throne party tonight!!!:o)
I had one about three years ago. The stuff they gave me — I forget its name — was SO COOL. It made me feel all loopy and relaxed. And it was not uncomfortable except for the embarrassment of having one’s tush exposed to the entire room of people!
Susan, I am the patient here not the nurse….:o) I do know what does go on…that is what scares the poo poo out of me..and not pun intended…but I am like you..talking about embarressment…I know these ppl and the Dr too….I wonder if I will ever be able to look them in the eyes ever again….LOL This is why I choose a gyn. that I never ever see….:o)
…besides I asked the nurse that will be there to recover me, to just never mind me when I talk crazy like the last time I was being recovered and the nurse could never get over what I meant by saying “in coming, in coming” I simply do not know what I was dreaming about!!!! scarry as hell. Hope I do not say something like to hell with bush or something to that degree or even worse……bs
Ari looks like Ernst Blofeld’s kitty. < cue the 007 theme. >
And I’m not completely climbing the walls. I am eating myself out of house and home, but I’ll go back to the gym next week.
The acupuncture helps I think. At least it is relaxing.
Yikes! You should write to kolbermann@msnbc.com — he is searching for stories like yours….
Have you tried the Nicorette gum? I take that when I’m flying .. it really works. Which sort of means that I should chew it all the time! ha!
Don’t like the taste of Nicorette. It has a nasty taste to me. I’m chewing sugar free gum when I need to relieve the oral fixation. And other than the acupuncture, I’m going cold turkey.
My only real problem with this quit is that I haven’t been able to sleep well. But from what I’ve read/heard, this will pass eventually.
Cool. Yeah, its taste isn’t appealing. But, once I chew it a few times, and park it in my mouth, I don’t mind it so much.
If you get to crawling the walls, it might be worthwhile to put up with the taste. Or buy the patches, if you can… my daughter bought the patches from a Canadian pharmacy at a much lower price.
What a majestic looking cat. There is a certain tiger-like quality there–maybe it’s the huge paws.
Click here for my most recent diary. It seems to have dropped pretty quickly without a lot of interest, but I do think it’s something that would resonate for people here:
Just got the Press the Meat rundown for its Sunday show:
MEET THE PRESS WITH TIM RUSSERT
WEEKEND LISTINGS 8/21/05
SEN. RUSS FEINGOLD (D – WI)
Foreign Relations Committee
SEN. TRENT LOTT (R – MS)
Author, “Herding Cats: A Life in Politics”
Intelligence Committee
LARRY DIAMOND
Author, “Squandered Victory: The American Occupation and the Bungled Effort to Bring Democracy to Iraq”
Fmr. Senior Adviser on Governance, Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq
DAN SENOR
Fmr. Chief Spokesperson, Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq
With the casualty count mounting in Iraq and protesters continuing to shadow President Bush, the debate over America’s involvement in Iraq has dominated the news. Should the U.S. set a deadline for withdrawing American troops? Yes, says Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI), who, in an exclusive interview on this Sunday’s “Meet the Press,” will discuss his decision to be the first U.S. Senator to offer a specific date — December 31, 2006 — as the target for the complete withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.
Then, former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS) will talk about his view that the U.S. should continue its involvement in Iraq and avoid setting a deadline for withdrawal. Lott will also talk about his candid new book, “Herding Cats: A Life in Politics” which details his rise to power and his eventual resignation as Majority Leader after his controversial remarks about Strom Thurmond and the political power play that followed. He has some harsh words for some of his colleagues and former friends that he says betrayed him during those tough December weeks in 2002.
And what is the status of the war in Iraq? Where do we go from here? And how did we reach this point? We’ll hear the differing analysis and opinions of two former advisers of the administration’s team in Iraq: Larry Diamond, former senior adviser on governance to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq and author of “Squandered Victory: The American Occupation and the Bungled Effort to Bring Democracy to Iraq” and Dan Senor, the former Chief Spokesperson for the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq.
Sooo ..
what would be a better title for Lott’s book?
SEN. TRENT LOTT (R – MS)
Author, “Herding Cats: A Life in Politics”
Intelligence Committee
“Herding Racists: A Life in Politics” ?
Killing Cats: Getting Screwed by Bill Frist
Speaking of Frist, did you run across Novak’s latest column bashing him?
not trying to be outguessing here but maybe his origional title, he is trying to tell us something here….As I see it, he might be giving away some political ploys..havent read the book and probably wont. Do not like Senor,,,he is surely one who has profitted from the billions of missing $$$$$$$$$$$$ I think those in the CPA all did….just a feeling…:o)
been closed for renovations?
I was wondering that too. I’ll post the Friday Night Jazz Jam a little early for the “happy hour” crowd…
I’m sorry, I got hung up with work and before I knew it, Dem in Knox had jumped in to save the day!!!!
That’s Chinese for “White cat.” I had a white cat I named Bai Mao – quickly shortened to “Mao” – he was such a pistol. So smart and such a unique critter.
But they all are when it comes down to it.
Props to Darcy!
About 26 years ago, I had a boyfriend who was a big Oakland Raiders fan … we adopted a kitten and he insisted on naming the kitten “Snake,” after Kenny Stabler’s nickname.
After we broke up, I couldn’t stand calling the lovely cat “Snake,” so started caling him variants of the word… ended up calling him “Nako.”
Years later, a client who’d studied in Japan brought me a gift, a Japanese figurine of a cat, and he told me that the word for cat in Japanese is Nako. It blew my mind.
… should be required to listen to this KUOW/Seattle NPR show at 1PM:

My questions today are did they get all the crosses fixed in Crawford? How is Cindy’s mother doing. Do we know the seriousness of her stroke? How is the nurses and firefighters doing in Boston insofar as their protest to Arnold? Have any news gotten to the senators on the judiary committee about roberts and his criminal actions and actions?
Brenda, i’ll check my e-mail messages from Howie in Seattle … he’s my best source on the latest on Cindy.
Huh .. just assumed this’d be a dog:
finally fell off the Recommended list at DKos.
If you can still recommend it, please do:
link
But it’s a fun diary too! Great links.
Okay, I sent this to all the girls at Left_Coast and to Darcy. That should help. I recommended early this AM.
YOU ARE BAD, BOOMAN! You don’t tell us you posted at DKos … and sometimes I go over there and check my Hotlist, only to see it’s too late to recommend your diary.
Be more shameless, please! We love to support your great writing.
but I feel bad doing it, and I usually make the reclist without pimping. But this is for Jerome.
Here’s a good reason not to feel badly: Many of us “hang” here instead of DKos a lot anymore so .. whereas I used to check my Hotlist every hour or two, I maybe check it every couple days now. It’s nice to know you’ve got something up that’s good and deserves a recommendation.
