The pastor explains that for years he has warned people that unless Christians in New Orleans took a strong stand against such things as local abortion clinics, the yearly Mardi Gras celebrations, and the annual event known as “Southern Decadence” — an annual six-day “gay pride” event scheduled to be hosted by the city this week — God’s judgment would be felt.
“New Orleans now is abortion free. New Orleans now is Mardi Gras free. New Orleans now is free of Southern Decadence and the sodomites, the witchcraft workers, false religion — it’s free of all of those things now,” Shanks says. “God simply, I believe, in His mercy purged all of that stuff out of there — and now we’re going to start over again.”
The New Orleans pastor is adamant. Christians, he says, need to confront sin. “It’s time for us to stand up against wickedness so that God won’t have to deal with that wickedness,” he says.
Believers, he says, are God’s “authorized representatives on the face of the Earth” and should say they “don’t want unrighteous men in office,” for example. In addition, he says Christians should not hesitate to voice their opinions about such things as abortion, prayer, and homosexual marriage. “We don’t want a Supreme Court that is going to say it’s all right to kill little boys and girls, … it’s all right to take prayer out of schools, and it’s all right to legalize sodomy, opening the door for same-sex marriage and all of that.”
Shanks heeded warnings to evacuate New Orleans, and is currently staying with friends in the Jackson, Mississippi, area.
This all reminds me of a different prophet:
“We don’t want a Supreme Court that is going to say it’s all right to kill little boys and girls… “
Unless, of course, they are poor and black. Nice brand of Christianity, Reverend Shanks.
Disgusting.
All I can say to that is that the pastor should read his Bible before condemning others, certainly before crowing about the disaster that has befallen his neighbors:
Bible’s got lots of stuff in it.
Some of it is merciful and loving (especially in the New Testament), but the Old Testament God was one angry dude.
“Then the Lord rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Lord out of the heavens” Genesis 19:24.
“Turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly” II Peter 2:6.
“And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.” Genesis 6:13
“And the man that committeth adultery with another man’s wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.” Leviticus 20:10 (this last one would virtually ensure a bloodbath in America, with not a whole lot of people left the Lord’s will was worked)
There are plenty of other parts where God commands the Faithful to slaughter tens of thousands, enslave folk, and so forth, but I think the point is that one can pick and choose any part of the Bible to support just about anything (love and forgiveness or violence and wrath) one wants to support.
Saying that this preacher is “un-Christian” is meaningless. Christians can quote from the Old Testament as well as the New Testament.
One reason there are so many sects of Christianity, as well as definitions of what it means to be a “Christian”, is because the Bible is an overstuffed volume of glaring contradictions.
Actually, I think the only meaningful separation is that of Old Testament Christians v. New Testament Christians.
Old Testament: Do not piss off the Lord Thy God, for He is full of Wrath and Vengeance.
New Testament: Sorry about all the Wrath and Vengeance. That was under old management.
The comforts of religion. I feel better. Thanks for sharing Boo Man. And, if I didn’t mention in the last month and then some of reading the (aaackkk-thacck) New York Times. Thanks for creating this alternative reality of news and opinion.
The wave of anger that is rising now hopefully will wash away right wing filth like Reverand Shanks who rejoice in the suffering and death of others. One of the things that nags at me like a noodge on a playground is how these loonies, under Bush, feel free to spout their crazy talk. My wish is that America will shout them down once and for all and send them back under the slimy rocks they came from. If he’s a man of God, I’m the Queen of France.
that putting the word “Reverend” in front of a name does not stop someone from being a hate-mongering asshole.
“Reverend” my ass.
that it took them so long to start this kind of craptalk. Honestly, I can imagine them getting absolutely giddy with excitement as the waters rose. Their “vengeful God” mentality is sick.
Didn’t we all know that crap was coming? I don’t believe in God, but if I did, I would prefer to think that he/she caused this disaster so Bush supporters would finally WAKE UP and see what an incompetent piece of sociopathic skin he really is. That’s not what I really think…I’m just sayin’…
Rev. Shanks needs to understand that Katrina was an equal opportunity hurricane.
Episcopal News Service
The Jackson Channel
I’m sure there are many, many more places of worship that have been devastated by Katrina. Based on Shanks’ logic an argument could be made that God is trying to send a message to the Church.
