From an LA Times article:
On Capitol Hill in recent years, several Democrats warned that more money should be marked for the protection of New Orleans. For instance, in September 2004, Landrieu said she was tired of hearing there was no money to do more work on levees.
“We’re told, can’t do it this year. Don’t have enough money. It’s not a high enough priority,” she said in a Senate speech. “Well, I know when it’s going to get to be a high enough priority.”
She then told of a New Orleans emergency worker who had collected several thousand body bags in the event of a major flood. “Let’s hope that never happens,” she said.
But in May 2004, then Senate Minority Whip Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said he had visited the levees as a guest of Landrieu and believed them adequate.
He praised the ancient water pumps for keeping the waters from cascading into the city, proclaiming them “these old, old pumps that hadn’t been changed since before the turn of the century, that still keep New Orleans dry.”
“It was as clean as a restaurant,” he added. “These big old pumps work.”
Today, eight of those 22 pumps are underwater and inoperable.
The article lays the preponderance of blame on the White House. Nevertheless, Democrat or Republican, whoever played a part in this needs to face the music.
That exemplifies what I’ve been saying: the left has to take a long, hard look at itself now.
I don’t think much of a long look is needed. Let’s check the list of Reid’s achievements, shall we?
Why, exactly, is this man supposed to be an ally of progressives?
At this point, it’s not about “ideological purity” or “single issues” or any of that shit. It’s about having elected representatives that will stand up for themselves, and will actually work to advance the party platform.
Because right now, the Senate is mostly Republican. Some – like Clinton, Reid, and Lieberman – have a “D” in front of their name, but their true colours are showing through.
Was one of the people responsible for 10,000 deaths in New Orleans.
I think that 10k is lowballing it considerably. I also think that every attempt will be made to undercount the deaths in LA, Mississippi and in Alabama. We need to be on this or, rather, I feel that the least we owe these people is an accurate count of their deaths.
We need a Viet Nam style memorial with the name and age of everyone who died carved on it.
That is one scathing indictment that I wasn’t sure how to respond to when I first read it becaus I want to believe, like so many others, that the man has a good heart. Actions do speak louder than words though.
REID IS NOT THE LEFT.
Reid is and has been a god dmaned collaborator. As have most Democrats in congress. FOR DECADES.
yup, exactly.
Fighting dem my ass.
Hi Marisacat. It’s good to see you again. hugs
But in May 2004, then Senate Minority Whip Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said he had visited the levees as a guest of Landrieu and believed them adequate.
Well, then, for the sake of the Democratic party and the citizens of this country Reid should apologise profusely for his poor judgement and leadership and step down.
I’ve been considering all the pork projects which actually have passed since 9/11. The enormous tropical greenhouse in fickin Ohio, the quarter billion dollar suspension bridge in Ketchikan (Ketchikan is on an Island, it has a population of 14K in the summer and about half that in the winter. It’s a little tiny po-dunk village and the bridge goes to their airport which is nicely connected by a 5 minute ferry ride. The towns in SE Alaska) the docks for Yachts and so on.
What pork did Nevada get?
Reid’s also getting over a minor stroke and is taking it easy. I expect (or at least hope), that he’ll hit the ground running come Tuesday.
