“They have M-16s and they’re locked and loaded. These troops know how to shoot and kill, and they are more than willing to do so.” – Kathleen Blanco, Democratic Louisiana Governor Governor
But I want to thank the president.” – Mary Landrieu, Democratic Louisiana Senator
“…you and I are not in a position to make any judgment because we weren’t there.” – Bill Clinton, former Democratic President

Democrats made these mean spirited and ignorant statements. The entire country is facing the plight of the people of New Orleans, coping with the dangers of Republican hell and Democratic high water. One party is proud of its viciousness while the other claims not to be vicious but proudly proclaims its willingness to shoot desperate refugees.
The degree of Democratic callousness in the New Orleans tragedy may be shocking at first, but it is actually consistent with the direction the party has taken for the past two decades. The Democrats are dying a slow political death. Their inaction and acquiescence in New Orleans is just the latest symptom presented by a terminal patient.
Not only do they refuse to fight, but they aren’t shy about admitting their cowardice. Party leadership boldly states for the record that they will continue to support a president whose policies have now become a liability for his own administration. They repeat John Kerry’s losing talking points as if they were religious scripture. Hillary Clinton, the likely nominee in 2008, advocates sending more troops to Iraq. Only one Democratic Senator, Russell Feingold, has publicly called for a withdrawal of American troops.
The love fest with the Bushies was a shameful performance. Thousands of people who couldn’t get out of the city followed directions to take refuge in the Superdome. They waited on line for hours and then sat helplessly as the stadium roof didn’t live up the word “super.” The wind and rain they hoped to escape came inside. They lived in fear of assault, reused disposable diapers and urinated on the floor, but the former president had only these words of comfort:
“So I understand why they’re so anxiety-ridden. But they have to understand, by the time it became obvious that they were in the fix they were in, there were a lot of other problems, too.”
Clinton could have been worse. He could have bragged about shoot to kill orders.
If Clinton really wanted to help New Orleans he should have refused the offer to join the old boys network of former presidents. He could have been the voice of an indignant and outraged nation. As a former president he was uniquely qualified to ask why the Department of Homeland Security kept no one in the Gulf Coast secure. He also has, or rather had, the unique ability to send Republicans into a frenzy of rage.
Bill Clinton could have cut short the wait for help with a simple offer to coordinate the relief effort personally. Dubya would have stopped looking like a deer caught in headlights and demanded action, if only to keep Clinton from getting any credit.
New Orleans itself epitomizes the anguish of Democrats. In 2004 it dodged the hurricane Ivan bullet. This city run by black Democrats only reluctantly opened the Superdome to shelter potential refugees. Despite the Ivan warning they did not develop an evacuation plan for the thousands of residents who don’t have cars, the only adequate means of escape. Their plan seemed to consist of hope, denial and wishful thinking that major hurricanes would miss the city and that levees would always hold up.
They won’t suffer no matter what they do because the Democrats are impotent. If the Republicans fail, the failure will be theirs alone. The Democrats will only win if by some miracle the Republicans find a way to do themselves in politically. In the meantime the Dems are like New Orleans, under water, engulfed by debris, and unable to answer pleas for help.
Highlights are mine… personally I am of the mind that if the Democrats do not oppose Roberts 100% … I am outta this party… simply because there will be no democracy left to save.
I was going to post this as its own diary, but I think it works better here.
I don’t think the Democrats are interested in winning.
Oh, they’d like to be in power again, that’s for sure. But Democratic politicians are getting plenty from the status quo. They’ve got all the advantages of being the underdog (fame, attention, money from those that don’t like the status quo, etc) with none of the disadvantages. Why none of the disadvantages? Because many of them – the vast majority, judging from their reactions to Howard Dean and the new Al Gore – agree with what the Republicans are doing. They don’t seriously oppose the right’s agenda because they wouldn’t do anything differently, but they don’t switch parties because this underdog gig is a sweet deal for them.
That’s why they’re working on slowly jettisoning all the traditional Democratic platform planks and positions. That’s what the DFL, NDN, and their Kindred Of Soul are all about. “Force” the party to drop support for women, gays, and minorities while milking the grassroots for as much money as possible.
I agree with you that the ugly truth is that many Dems agree with what the Repubs want. If they didn’t, they would disagree, duh, and they don’t, or if they do, then they pull a Joe Biden and vote with the Repubs anyway. We waste a whole lot of energy bewailing the fact that dogs bark, cats scratch, and those “Democrats” act like Republicans. Those Democrats are Republicans, no matter how strongly they might deny it. Trying to get them to change, or trying to prod them to lead us, is like trying to get Trent Lott to support environmental protection or to get Tom Delay to lead us in campaign funding reform. Ain’t gonna happen.
What can we expect from Democrats when they put this on the frontpage of their website..
Ok… Why not just hit the campaign trail for the GOP as well if you are going to advertise and promote their candidates on your website?
MORONS!
Out of all of the Dems in office I can’t even use all of my fingers to count the one’s I really could support.
Oh well, I guess that is why I am independent.
Thanks for posting this Parker. It’s a perfect summary of our own disaster.
I have already left the party in spirit – but keeping the registration so I can retain some voice locally. Appeals for cash or votes are refused – I will gladly tell them why my support goes elsewhere.
Ahem.
I would like to point out that all the democrats mentioned in this diary and all democrats involved in the complete failure leadership along the Gulf Coast are card carrying members of the DLC.
Indeed, both Naglin and Blanco have been New Dems of the week.
The whole sorry-excuse-for-human-beings lot of them are DLC dems including Landrieux. They’re not just DLC dems, they’re ‘pro-life’ dems. Which is ironic, what with one thing and another.
Re: Anti-abortion in Lousiana
George Will was distressed to see all those single mother evacuees in NOLA who were so Black.
Given that most African Americans are middle class and almost half live outside central cities, and that 76 percent of all births to Louisiana African Americans were to unmarried women, it is a safe surmise that more than 80 percent of African American births in inner-city New Orleans — as in some other inner cities — were to women without husbands. That translates into a large and constantly renewed cohort of lightly parented adolescent males, and that translates into chaos in neighborhoods and schools, come rain or come shine.
Now is it time, Parker, to start a third party? Now is it time to take to the streets? Now is it time to destroy your credit cards? Now is it time to zip up our wallets and tell these people to go fuck themselves?
There’s already plenty of parties. Problem is getting critical mass (i.e. MONEY) to make an impact.
I wish the Greens would get their act together…are there any Green Blogs in Scoop?
If you look at the history of Louisiana and Huey Long you will see that a better strategy is to take over the democrats. Now Kos has been a disappoinment in this department since his minions are siding with dlc Blanco but mydd and booman aren’t We should have started becoming suspicious of him when he endorsed NDN’s Simon Rosenberg over Dean. Also it is clear to me now that many of the the uber mods, people who have permanant mod status and are above the rules that guide normal kossaks are Liebermanites.
NOw that is one I could go for!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AMEN
The Demorcrats are trying to present a Republican alternative to the Republican party. It’s the same party. Democrats are the Liberal wing of a semi fascist Republican party
Personally I couldn’t agree more with what you have said Parker.
The democrats have played the politics of survival for so long they are left with no beliefs of their own. All they have are watered down versions of the neocon agenda. Which begs the question: Since when is your political survival more important then the literal survival of the people who voted for you?
Only Senator Kennedy has stood firm in his opposition to them. He is our last icon.
No policies. Don’t stand for anything. Don’t upset Repub voters. Don’t upset fundies. Do everything in a bi-partisan consensual manner. Never try to hold anyone accountable.
What will we get if by some strange quirk of fate the Dems accidentally and inspite of themselves win?
Great Diary by the way.
