in D.C. this weekend and not in Texas until Tuesday. I wonder if we will even be able to get a room in San Antonio to use during my son’s surgery. Cat said I can stay with her and I may just be doing that.
I just had a fresh thought as this mother of all hurricanes bears down on Bushcountry……we are going to need even more help now from the National Guard and where is our National Guard again?
I was thinking that with another super-duper hurricane bearing down on a country that’s clearly unprepared to handle natural disasters, maybe Bush should take this as a sign from God and RESIGN!
No, he probably sees it as a second chance for him to act all heroic and decisive in the face of disaster and get that far away look in his eyes. Deep down I bet he’s even glad to have this opportunity. I mean, with this guy it is all about him.
I am thinking about how fucking still the air is outside right now — it is the proverbial calm before the storm. I know we’re inland here in Austin, but we are going to get wind and rain adn tornado warnings out the wazoo.
I am also thinking about people who would wish ill on people … and hoping that they never stand in the path of anything destructive, including themselves.
I was in bitch slap mode all day every time I heard that asshole pResident jump on the “we’re ready for Rita” bandwagon. Sure, it’s Texas. Also thinking that the chances of the march in DC getting any coverage now are probably zero. Does anyone know if any actual federal resources are being mobilized for this hurricane? All I know is I heard Bush jerking off on this all fucking day. I really would like just one chance to slap that shitty smirk off of his face.
I can’t get it out of my mind. It feels as if Katrina ripped a hole in the cover, and bits of truth are slipping through. When I think I know what I know, something else slips through and shows that it is so much worse than I thought. Bad days ahead my friends, an ill wind is blowing through our bones and through our souls.
I’m thinking about how I woke up from my nap, turned on CNN and saw this plane flying around while listening to Paula Zahn blabber on and on with some airline pilot talking about emergency landings without mentioning why this was happening in the first place! How flipping annoying, So, I found an AP breaking news story that told me there were problems with the wheels. Okay. Damn. May they land safely (at approx. 8:50 pm ET)! And thanks to whoever invented the internets.
I’m wondering how much longer the idiots on cable news are going to continue to act like idiots..regarding this plane…how many hours exactly do we have to watch a picture of it in the air and forget any other news. Ok so it has gear problems, it’s not like it is going to blow up or has terrorists on board..couldn’t they wait till it’s going in for landing to cover the story?
I really don’t understand wtf is wrong with news that they can not cover more than one story at a goddamn time. This just drives me crazy and why I seldom watch any news any more or only check in very briefly to see if there reporting bears any relation to what I’m reading on the internet.
when your hurricane coverage is interrupted by possible plane crash coverage, and then the plane coverage is interrupted by tornado coverage, and then it’s back to hurricane coverage…
ABC’s new TV program, Invasion, (a show about a hurricane and its aftermath), just started out with the following warning (paraphrased): ‘Due to recent events, some viewers may be sensitive to some images’. That’s good of them – nothing worse than having PTSD from Hurricane Katrina and then tuning into a TV show about a fake hurricane that can trigger that trauma.
Fun for us here in the Twin Cities tonight. Worrying all day about Rita, and we get a thunderstorm with straight light winds at about 70 mph. It does make you wonder wtf is going on. But we’ll survive. Wishing all my best to all of you hunkering down for Rita!!
Its thunderstorm, hail and straight line winds. Lots of power outages, trees down etc. One of those nights that all major networks are pre-empted by the local weather guys. But they say that the worst of it is over. I just went and checked my back yard. I have a huge and VERY old elm tree that has survived worse, but usually litters my yard with branches, but it all looks pretty good. Whew!
I’ve been reading all the comments about the upcoming protest in DC. Looks like quite a few of you will be going, meeting up, etc. So good to see! I wanted to participate in some way, so I’ll be with all the BTers in spirit, but physically I’ll be at the protest in Ottawa.
Here’s some information for anyone interested in attending protests north of the border:
The Canadian Peace Alliance is calling on its member groups, individuals and supporters to mobilize for a pan-Canadian day of action against the wars of occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan and in support of US military war resisters on Saturday, September 24th, 2005.
On that date, tens of thousands of people will participate in a huge anti-war demonstration in Washington, DC. We in Canada stand in solidarity with our American friends as we call on the Government of Canada to uphold international law by declaring the war of occupation in Iraq to be illegal under the charter of the United Nations. We are also calling for the removal of Canadian troops from Afghanistan as it is the largest contingent of support for the US led war of terror.
MARCH AND RALLY
September 24, 2005 – 12 noon – Confederation Park (to Ottawa City Hall)
Ottawa joins the international peace movement to march against the aggressive Bush policies.
MAIN THEMES:
-No To Bush’s Wars
-End the Occupation of Iraq
-Stop Canadian Complicity
RELATED THEMES:
-Canadian troops out of Afghanistan
-Canadian troops out of the Middle East
-Canadian and other foreign troops out of Haiti
-Let the War Resisters Stay in Canada
-Islam is not the Enemy, War is not the Answer
-Abolish Security Certificates and Secret Trials
-Make Poverty History. Reduce Military Spending
-Demand Peaceful Pension
So there I was on dkos the other night handing out 4’s to everyone who responded to a comment I made. And then I realized that what passes for normal here might seem strange to kossacks. But then to my great suprise people started to reciprocate. Fascinating.
I heard something the other day that I just knew Bootribers would appreciate. I was at a meeting of directors of United Way funded agencies and we were reviewing some pretty serious data on class and race disparities in MN. We were talking about how to get the corporate community to pay attention to the information and someone said:
“Its like those people were born on third base, and think they hit a triple.”
Still laughing about Mr. MilitaryTracy’s comment that we should fight the hurricanes off the coast of Africa instead of waiting until they get here. Or is that Captain Mr. MilitaryTracy?
Went out today to fill the car gas tank before the prices go up again, do some errands. When we are deep in December, and it’s getting dark at 3 p.m., and I am grousing about cold and achey pains and ice on the roads, you may remind me that today, the last full day of summer in this year anno domini 2005, I wallowed in Maine’s glorious Indian Summer weather.
Took the long way home from the errands, down a winding, slightly hilly road with a long view out over the bay–wasting a precious and non-renewable resource on such a vibrant day to drive and look at the sparkling water and enjoy the fresh, clean air. Got a couple of blues and gospel CDs from the library, the kind where the very old cover photo shows the singers in zoot suits and slouch-brim hats, and drove along a bit too fast with old-timey Black New Orleans gospel music belting full blast! Truly, a joyous noise unto the Lord.
While I was in town, I saw this bumper sticker:
THE BUSH LEGACY: LEAVE NO CHILD A DIME
And I am discovering that the small car I got recently to replace a larger one is getting more than 40 mpg! A good thing, that.
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/092105Q.shtml According to Capitol Police her caravan was stopped and bomb sniffing dogs used..they said SOP for large vehicles..her caravan apparently has 3 RV’s and several cars..stopped sometime this afternoon.
Though I admit it is my sincere hope that both Boston and the Yankees fare equally well against baltimore and toronto (lower-cased for sucking), thereby vindicating schedulemakers everywhere by heading into their head to head series tied.
Now that would be drama. Especially if Cleveland and the ChiSox keep pace, meaning do or die (figuratively) in the AL East.
I agree. As much as my heart can’t take the intensity of the do or die scenarios, it wouldn’t be worth watching if it was a walk for the Yanks. There’s no glory in winning when your competition sucks. They have to earn it.
Now you’re testing me :o)
NY and Bos. ended up in a tie in ’78. They had a one game playoff to see who got the pennant (before wildcard of course) winner take all.
So I assume the same applies here. EXCEPT…. so two sudden death games to begin with leaves two pennant winners and two potential wildcards. IO guess the two losers play another one game sudden death playoff to see who is the wild card.
This is what they say (I’d link it, but it’s in a java applet):
If three clubs finish the season with the same winning percentage and one team will be a division winner and another will be the wild card, the games will be played as follows: The two teams tied for the division lead will play the one-game tie-breaker, with the winner being declared the division champion. The losing team will then play the club from the other division for the wild card.
The reason your proposition doesn’t work is that regardless of what happens in the AL East, Cleveland gets the wild card, which is essentially penalizing teams for finishing tied for the division lead.
Rita may well still be a Cat 1 when it zips by here — local Austin weather forcasts say rain and WIND, and lots of it, at least tropical storm force maybe more — Rita is supposed to go east of us, but I remember Hugo’s remanants when I lived in Blacksburg (SW Virginia) and it wasn’t pretty….
They have mandatory evacuations in Victoria now (about midway between Houston and San Antone) and my husband just seems to think that everyone is overreacting. God damn it, but he pisses me off sometimes — it looks like any storm prep around here, I’m going to have to do myself.
I already have ice and water and batteries and flashlights and all that, but I am worried about the integrety of the house, we have TONS of trees and they haven’t been trimmed since we moved in last April (not our house), there is a ton of stuff out in the back yard that needs to picked up and secured in
the garage or somewhere…we have no renter’s insurance so if any windows break or trees fall through the roof, we will just be SOL.
Ah well, I’ll do what I can tomorrow and Friday…shit.
National weather service is showing Rita as a hurricane Sunday 1am over central east Texas. That’s a minimum of 74mph so it would be wise to take a few precautions such as the one’s you mention. Make sure you have water and batteries, candles, etc. I would’nt worry about leaving unless your local authorities suggest it. You still have today to think about it being as far inland as you are. Then again, if there is a threat of tornadoes, maybe more action should be taken. I’m not trying to be alarming but it’s always better safe than sorry. You’ll know what to do. It looks like the track has shifted to the east a little and Nola has been put under a watch. Amazing.
Thanks, super — I saw that the track has shifted east as well, so I feel a little better this morning…still going to do all of the things above. I’m also gonna run around with a friend of mine (goddess-mom to my boys) who has got 20 people coming to her house from the Corpus Christi area…
in D.C. this weekend and not in Texas until Tuesday. I wonder if we will even be able to get a room in San Antonio to use during my son’s surgery. Cat said I can stay with her and I may just be doing that.
you are more than welcome, you know that.
Just travel safe, sister, I do want to see you next week.
“Has he been indicted yet?”
on cable news!
Wow, thats amazing. Thanks for linking it.
surprising the hell out of me lately!
Damn, that was good. The only laugh I’ve had so far today.
That was great!
to discuss THAT topic!

that I was daydreaming? 🙂
I’m thinking that I guess there are no atheists during hurricane season….
Sure there are. Mother Nature is my Goddess :o)

OK now Catnip, can we go back to your good news diary now? Bad news overload.
I was stressed watching the Rita coverage today. Wow.
I’m wondering how much longer the idiots on cable news are going to continue to act like idiots..regarding this plane…how many hours exactly do we have to watch a picture of it in the air and forget any other news. You got that right!

CNN reported a tornado in Minnesota.
Whew!
We had a huge tree in the yard split in two here last year during a hail storm. It missed the house when it fell. Quite the scene!

And the Ottawa info for anyone nearby 🙂
If Americans displayed a fraction of the international interest, concern and involvement that Canadians do, this country would be just fine.
that you now have to pay to read Paul Krugman online at the NY Times site. Yes, I know, some people have other things to worry about right now.
just sign in as MyLeftWing, password is motherfucker…courtesy of MSOC. (You may need to sign in as My Left Wing with spaces, but you get the idea)
Just checked…no spaces, and it works!
Thank you. Thank you. Somehow these little things can really piss you off.

Why do Hollywood-made aliens always have gooey slime on them?
Well, you did ask what was on my mind…
leaders have British accents? For example all classical Roman and Greek leaders.
I know why the bad guys have German accents.
ENGLISH accents.
We never hear a Roman Senator say “It’s nae mair than the guid Laird gave me, ye puritan pukes!”
Booman, I’m sure you saw the good news.
Yanks win, Sox lose.
Yanks 1/2 game ahead.
Thank yoooooo

What happens should the following scenario come to pass at the end of the regular season?
AL East
——–
NYY 95-67
BOS 95-67
AL Central

CWS 96-66
CLE 95-67

This is what they say (I’d link it, but it’s in a java applet):
ok, so I had it right the first time…I think
no I did’nt! It’s late my friend :o)
And now I am heading to bed safe with my new knowledge that there won’t be 5 teams in the AL playoffs 🙂
Good night.
ok… here goes.
Chicago wins pennant period.
NY, Bos. play one game sudden death, loser goes home because Cle. has better record.
NY and Bos. have to play to determine pennant winner.
and….Cle. is wildcard
See my above comment 🙂
The reason your proposition doesn’t work is that regardless of what happens in the AL East, Cleveland gets the wild card, which is essentially penalizing teams for finishing tied for the division lead.

a couple guys in the office that i figured might be republicans are bitching about bush being an idiot and the money we’re spending on the iraq war.
