[Great, great work by BrotherFeldspar, and others. From the diaries by susanhu. Keep checking this for updates. BooMan and I will “timestamp” it to keep it afloat in the Recent Diaries too.] By popular demand! The consensus Schedule of Events for the upcoming Peace Weekend in DC:
- Friday, 4pm – ???: Happy Hour, etc. at the Capital City Brewery, Downtown, 1100 New York Ave NW, about one block north of Metro Center. The Cap City is kid-friendly, so don’t be shy about bringin’ along the young-uns; we’ll have a table just for them. No doubt you’ve seen that the Word is out not only here, but also at the DailyKos and at My Left Wing, so we expect good turn-out!
- Saturday, 11am: Rendezvous with the contingent of bloggers from dKos, MLW, and elsewhere, at the Visitor’s Center on the Ellipse, towards the northeast corner of the Ellipse near 15th Street. This will be the time and place to meet if you cannot meet us before 11am. This location will place us near the Veterans for Peace contingent when the march itself kicks off. The Kossacks plan to have a large orange flag flying, and no doubt some Tribbers will be sporting BooTrib t-shirts, so keep your eyes peeled for either of those signals.
More details after the flip…
- Saturday, 2pm: the Operation Ceasefire concert kicks off on the grounds of the Washington Monument, with a list of acts too long and illustrious to recount here.
- Saturday evening: nothing formal is planned, but no doubt bloggers will be gathering aroud town for dinner, drinks, and more discussion.
- Sunday: event organizers United for Peace & Justice are holding training sessions for the grassroots activities planned for Monday. There is also the Green Festival taking place, coincidentally, this weekend at the DC Convention Center. Some Tribbers are planning to attend the Green Festival, while others are planning to visit some of the monuments & memorials scattered about the area.
The Green Festival will be a great event in its own right. Taking place on the same weekend as a major march should really boost its attendance Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Please take the time to check out the schedule of speakers, as well as the list of exhibitors. A full schedule and map can be found here in PDF format. Lester Brown, Amy Goodman, and Greg Palast are keynote speakers at the Green Festival on Sunday, while Dennis Kucinich is speaking on Saturday (at the same time as the march, unfortunately). Admission is $15, or only $5 if you arrive via bicycle.
As for visiting monuments, there is a lot of feeling for visiting the Vietnam Memorial Wall, while certainly the well-known Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials are close at hand. In the same vicinity at the west end of the Mall are the FDR Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the new National Memorial to World War II.
So Tribbers, there it all is, and here is your chance:
Sing out in the comments if you know you’re coming to DC for these events, and want to meet up with some fellow Tribbers, either just for the march, or for some other fun and worthwhile activities too.
Sing out in the comments if you’re sitting on the fence about coming, or don’t want to attend by yourself. There’s going to be quite a crowd of us there, and we’re hardly strangers by this point. If you let us know you want to come, we’ll make sure that we can meet up somehow.
Sing out in the comments if you need a place to stay. We may have some limited accomodation Friday and/or Saturday nights, or may be able to help arrange for some if necessary.
Keep an eye on this space for updates and changes. This message has been brought to you by a small group of Tribbers who have been discussing these plans for a couple weeks. Suggestions and comments are more than welcome in the thread below.
Thanks for all your great work. I for one am most appreciative.
I will be there Friday night and attending the breakfast on Saturday morning. Who else will be there Friday night?
There should be quite a crowd, from first look. Several of us from BooTrib, naturally, plus another cohort of Kossacks led by RenaRF. Oh, and MSOC too. Come to think of it, this could get a little out of hand…. Let’s just remember that getting arrested in a bar before the peace march doesn’t count as civil disobedience.
I can’t be there, but as I was reading this, realized that my friendly local community radio station was playing . . .
Arlo Guthrie singing “Alice’s Restaurant.” One of the great antiwar anthems of our times.
Happy march, peaceful times, safe home to all BooTribbers in DC. Our hopes and prayers go with you.
We play that song during our thanksgiving feast π
Don’t be sitting at the group W bench π
Funny thing about that song, it’s geographically accurate. I know the town well, and Alice’s (or what used to be Alice’s) is half a mile from the railroad track. Officer Obie died a few years back. The judge really was blind.
Arlo’s a nice guy, too. Very unassuming, has done lots of good in the community.
will be there around 4ish for Friday at the Brewery. After I make sure all are settled in with their room keys.
Will be there for the breakfast and I want so badly to march with you Tribbers! So I’ll be duct taping myself to Brother and BrotherFeldspar π
Then I’m doing what my brother wants and go to the concert and speakers.
Sunday is a peaceful day. Few tours and such.
Monday before I leave I’ll be doing some CodePink stuff.
A huge shout out to ShyCat, BrotherFeldspar, Steven D’s family and Cabin Girl for planning and supporting and providing for this weekend so that others can be safe, fed and surrounded by friends.
Hey Kids, when you visit the Vietnam Memorial, look back to the tree line and you will see my memorial. The Vietnam Womens Memorial. Please go by and visit it please…just know I spent 10 years working for this to be place there…as well as many others. When you do, just remember the women that served incountry and everywhere during that era of time. Lots of very good thoughts coming your way from me here in Tennessee….I am looking forward to see y ou all on TV, and maybe even be able to see some of you that I have seen pictures of. Look for the TV camera and give us a shout out….:o) Stay well and safe. Oh by the way, the Korean mem and the WWII memorial is a spectacular sight to see. HOpe some of you get to Arlington to see the all womens memorial. That too is an impressive memorial to see. It is right at the gate to get into Arlington Cem. watch for the Sec Serv. guys and gals…they are dangerous..I have had experience with them in the past..not a good one either.
Lots of love to ya all…have a drink for me, if you will…..:o)
Brenda, I will be marching in San Francisco this weekend, but am planning a trip to D.C. next month and will visit the Women’s Memorial and think of you.
Brenda, I always love your posts and thanks for reminding people of the Women’s Vietnam Memorial-a forgotten group of people who served in Vietnam coming home to even less glory than the Vietnam Vets yet with all the problems and stresses that effected the men serving over there….many forgotten stories of heroism and courage..just another part of history passed over.
I didn’t even know there was a Vietnam Women’s Memorial. I hope we get to check it out while we’re there.
Cross-pollination of bloggers? Amy Goodman at the Green Festival? Memorials? These are all terrific, but I’m still pulling for checking out the Hope diamond at the Smithsonian…anyone else?
BroFel and mlk and supersoling, thanks for sharing all your local knowledge in the planning stages! And Shycat, you’re the greatest! This is going to be so much fun!
Can’t wait…see you all Friday at the Cap City to kick off the weekend!
from Iraq. I will try to hit the place as close to 4pm as I can unless something comes up and I have to leave home later than expected.
Are you in DC through Sunday?
I’m going to call you on your cell when we hit DC.
to prepare for my sons trip to San Antonio. I’m there to stay until I just can’t stay any longer.
Hey there — I didn’t call you. I’m sorry! I will if you tell me when’s a good time to catch you, or just call me when it’s a good time for you!
James told me that you called Sunday and said you think you’ll be in San Antone on the 27th — is that right?
but looks like the evening of the 27th right now.
It’s ok, hon, I know you have a lot on your plate right now, whenever you get here, we’ll be here… and hopefully at least SOME of us will be able to drive down and see you — you know that we would love to have you come spend a day or so with us as well, but we completely understand if you can’t!!
someone ought to bring the “Hello, My Name is” stickers so all bloggers are instantly recognizeable to each other. LOL.
Actually a great idea, one I wish we’d done for a couple of the DCKossack meet-ups I was at. The key is to write both your first name and your handle on the tag. I’ll pick up some green ones this week.
If you don’t have a name tag, someone should have a page of some kind of frog picture stickers for you all to stick on your collars or shirts. Like a secret handshake.
so that I can find you guys.
Holy comment list… 251 comments in the Kos MSOC diary… how am I to gleen any info on who needs what?? Will I be notified if anyone needs something that was listed? ACKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
Rena’s diary had it so that people would email her or me if they needed assistance in a room or a meal before the march.
(insert panic)
Peaceful protesters have a way of gently and gracefully solving all problems and difficulties together joyfully!
Damn! I am so thrilled I get to meet you!!!!!!!!!
I’m going to be dog-tired that night as I will be traveling since Thur night. But when I think of meeting you… my dimples show up (the ones on my face! that is :))
Stop me before I start blubbering all over again… I love ya! π
I was high or something for a week after I left Crawford. It gets very hard sometimes as this administration grinds away at everything that most of us here holds dear. Sometimes it seems never ending and depressing until you stand there with a whole bunch of people just as upset as you are and all that energy unifies and fills the air. That was when I knew that these guys are out of here. Not necessarily tomorrow, but this is still America and we may have our hands momentarily tied while they appear untouchable, but that won’t last forever and I am definitely not the only stomped on pissed off person out there.
Janet– do not panic–everything is gonna be fine!
Why do I say that?
because there are all kinds of people–real adults— who are going to be there and will cope.
Do not hesitate to ask for help if you feel overwhelmed.
Not a manic panic more like a Madeline Khan comedic panic π
All have their rooms. So that is great!
I’m feeling as Super says, “Hyper”. I can’t sit still for long. It’s a bit like a buzz or a rush.
And I’m so freakin’ stoked to be meeting so many incredible and wonderful people. Friday will be a fantastic day/evening.
OMG! You’ll see what a dorkalina I am in real life LOL
That one Tim guy that I hung out with in Crawford…..and I ain’t even going to post his last name here, but I guess he is going to be speaking and he decided to google his name since his name was going to hit the press again. See, then this certain diary of mine came up and said some things and I got in just a touch of hot water. He decided to forgive me and I deleted the diary……geez man, just keeping everybody up to speed man! My right cheek is still sore.
Google is dangerous. Potential employers use it to find out what you’ve written on the web (assuming you’ve used your real name). It can come back to bite people, as you’ve experienced.
I’m all a-tingle…
It’s going to be a good weekend. I look forward to meeting & marching with all my blog-colleagues who’ll be turning out.
I am so looking forward to the multi-blogger get together Friday night-see you there!
that concert lineup is amazing.
I think I’ll be on the UFPJ bus from Brooklyn on Saturday and then looking for the Tribbers once we get in…
If you can’t meet us there & then, drop me or CabinGirl a private email; we’re arranging a list so we can be in cellphone contact with other Tribbers to set up on-the-spot meets.
w00t! Was tellin hubbo- that Holiday Inn will not know what hit them!
Friday night is looking more and more unlikely for me since it doesn’t look like I can take the whole day off like I wanted to. Shorthanded at work. But I’m still trying. It takes me about five hours to get to DC from E.Long Island so even if I leave after work, I’ll be in Columbia (Md)where I’m staying with my Mother in law (YIKES!!) by 11 or 12 so I won’t miss breakfast Sat. morning. Thanks again and again and again Shycat! :o)
Brother F, what time in the morning does the Metro start running? I just need to make sure I get going early enough Sat to make 9:00 breakfast. Sunday Memorial gazing sounds good to me so maybe I’ll be duct taping myself to D. Janet and her brother for that although the Green Festival sounds good too. Don’t frogs gravitate towards green anyway ? :o) But I definetily want to see the Vietnam Memorial wall and the Women’s Vietnam Memorial so I can pay my respects properly to one of my most favorite Tribbers Brenda Stewart. BTW, Cali Scribe, if you read this, I remember that you said your brother was lost in Vietnam, with respect…..you wondered if one of us could do a rubbing of his name for you. If you tell me his name again, I’ll get it for you. It would be an honor and a very small thing to do for another of my most favorite Tribbers :o)
So I guess that’s it. I’m excited and I feel hyper aware and very alive, but most of all I feel proud to be coming from NY to represent Booman Tribune and my fellow Frogs in our next effort to bring George Bush to accountability.
Peace
I think Metro normally starts running at 7am on weekends, but they may run special schedules this weekend to accomodate the larger crowds. Their website, http://www.wmata.com, might have more details. I did a quick look and didn’t see any special notice about extra service this weekend, but I’d be surprised if they run a normal weekend load.
Thanks Brother Feldspar. It’s been about five years since I last used the Metro down there so i’ve lost any familiarality I might of had with it. I’ll check their site :o)
Re the name: I believe it was Jerry Ray Beebe…I hope Scribe sees this to confirm, though.
Thanks CG. So was it scribe or cali scribe?
Plain scribe. π
I’ll see everyone at the happy hour Friday. Then will meet up with you at the visitors center Saturday. Don’t think I’ll be at breakfast. Looking forward to an exciting time. Thanks BrotherFeldspar for the schedule.
Goodmorning all,
I’ve pasted this comment here from the cafe because it looks like the cafe is about to scroll off the list.
two things on Hurricane Rita.
First, it looks like Galveston is the target of this next monster storm, at least right now anyway. I lived in Galveston, which is nothing more than a barrier island, when I was a kid. I still have friends there from elementary school I haven’t been in touch with them for some years now but it occured to me last night to make contact with some of them just to let them know I’m thinking of them and hoping they will be safe. My last day on that island was spent riding out a tropical storm in 1973 so this is bringing back some memories. At least it looks as though the local government is properly prepared for the worst. They are in my thoughts.
Second, you can see in the Nat. Weather Service map here that landfall is expected on Saturday sometime. For anyone still wondering if the national press is going to cover the march in DC on Sat.,this storm just about gaurantees that it will not. Of course the lives and safety of those on the Texas coast are infinetily more important, but I am a little discouraged nonetheless.
Be careful out there today everyone :o)
Well, I hope the storm doesn’t get too much stronger; that’s the last thing they need down there. Although I’m sure TEXAS would get better aid than LA or MS.
With the march coverage, you know, the media would find some way to ignore it no matter what, or show mostly counter-protestors instead. (Speaking of which, I didn’t see any counter-protestors at the rally in Philly). Maybe I’m too cynical.
Either way, I’m looking forward to being there with a LOT of other like-minded folks, bloggers and non-bloggers alike.
Well the Freepers will be there:
http://www.supportthetroopsweekend.org/schedule.php
but I doubt there’ll be that many of them.
It’s our country too, and that’s why we’re supporting the troops by insisting they come home NOW.
I really wish I could make it to DC for this, but a recent health problem combined with recent poverty prevent me from showing up in person.
I wish everyone well and look forward to your collective voice stimulating a change for the better.
I’m in this category also, sucks pretty much but the fact that I ‘know’ people from here that are going and will be representing so many of us that can’t go does help me feel better about being stuck at home.
Got package today. Very cool. It went to Flint first. Why? I don’t know. Just a mess up. Maybe it was Michael Moore karma.
I will try to get by the meet-up place on Friday night and see if I can get any signatures. And, I will make sure to get your message seen by anyone who will look.
Talk to you after return.
I wish that I could be there with all of you! I’d love to meet other tribbers and participate but my obligations preclude it. I look forward to reading all about it here.
