P.S. I just spotted this story in the New York Times: “Caught in a Train Delay, a Protest Takes a Detour.”
An electrical failure in New Jersey disrupted train service between New York and Washington for five hours yesterday morning, leading to confusion, delays and an impromptu protest outside Pennsylvania Station by antiwar activists who gave up on plans to join a larger rally in the nation’s capital.
Service was shut down just before 5 a.m. Vernae Graham, a spokeswoman for Amtrak, said the electrical failure occurred in Rahway when a crane accidentally dropped a beam on the wires that provided power to the trains, severing the connection. … 13 Amtrak trains were affected. …Several members said they paid Amtrak roughly $9,000 two months ago to charter their own train car with 84 seats. …
[At the impromptu protest] the radical cheerleaders, dressed in pleated short skirts, with pompoms made of plastic trash bags, shouted: “Let’s get on the right track. Get the troops out of Iraq.” Another chant went “Money for trains, not war.”
Money for trains? No way. The GOP plans to exploit Katrina’s huge costs to destroy innumerable gov’t programs: “The Republicans would freeze funding for the Peace Corps, the Global AIDS Initiative, U.N. peacekeeping operations and a wide variety of third-world development programs; eliminate the EnergyStar program, eliminate grants to states and local communities for energy conservation, reduce federal subsidies for Amtrak, eliminate funding for new light-rail programs …” Salon, via Broken Words Blog
Will you be posting an evening open thread? I have a sad news story to share that I don’t want people to miss. Thanks.
Sure … give me a few.
Aaron Brown was just showing front pages from tomorrow’s papers and pointed out the anti-war rally story on WaPo’s sheet. He quoted the article which says there were about 100,000 people there today and that he thought he had heard from all 100,000 of them asking why CNN didn’t cover the story and wondering if there was a “conspiracy” going on. Aaron assured everyone there was no conspiracy. It was just a matter of unfortunate timing because of hurricane Rita. I appreciate the fact the he responded to those who took the time to question CNN.
Either I have PMS and I’m in denial that I have PMS because I usually am when I have PMS…or this has been one hell of an emotional day watching, reading, and blogging about all of the amazingingly huge stories in America today. I’m happy…I want to cry…I’m tired…I’m wide awake…I’m amazed…I’m saddened…what a rollercoaster.
