I assume everyone has seen it by now, and everyone knows we still don’t know who will be the new prez.
Around here we figure if it’s Alda, it’ll just be one TV show we won’t have to worry about watching every week. Bartlett has been our president of the united states of fantasy. We’re not interested in a Repub in both worlds.
An Alda presidency would mean a complete change in the cast. That isn’t likely. A Smits presidency could be a simple continuation of the Bartlett presidency, with a few changes in positions (Josh to Chief of Staff, Leo to VP, Donna and Charlie moving up the ranks a bit, etc). This seems like the much more likely scenario to me, especially given the way the writers have been finding ways to keep people like Leo involved.
I’ll bet you a nickle this whole season is about the campaign. We’ll get to see parallel tracks of the campaign from the Santos point of view, and from the point of view of the other campaign. And of course, the final year of the Bartlett White House, lame duck, seeking his legacy, etc. I’ll bet the season finale is a cliffhanger on election night and we still won’t know who’s president this time next year. And just imagine the contract negotiations.
Not that I’m complaining. They’ll get a lot of mileage out of a presidential campaign. It’ll be fun.
I’ll be interested to see how they portray Alda’s character. I was uncomfortable with how they played the whole 25th Amendment handover subplot a couple of seasons ago. John Goodman’s character and the gang around him were a little too superficial for me. They just seemed like cardboard characters set up as evil strawmen for us to dislike. The little glimpses we have seen so far of Alda’s character seem a little more like a real human being. I hope they develop the character fully, even if he ultimately turns out to be a less than sympathetic character.
I flippin fell asleep on the damn couch…again! Time for tivo in my house…lol!Should be an interesting season. What I did see before I fell alseep was interesting though. Did CJ leak the story about the astronouts or not?
I knew there’d be some like-minded West Wing addicts in the pond! I was like brinnainne and thought it would be on at 8 – but I did channel surf around 7:15 and caught most of it. I like that its on Sundays – an evening that I’m usually home.
After last season, I thought it looked like they were setting up the election as another kind of “fantasy” politics. One in which BOTH candidates were men (the fantasy of women running for the office is yet to be realized) of humanity and conscience. I loved the scene last season where Bartlett was arguing for a place for faith in politics and Alda’s character (the Republican) arguing against it.
West Wing, but might check it out this season, as well as picking up the DVD sets from the past seasons.
From what I hear, Bartlett leaves mid-season, so that’ll be when the election is I’d assume. That’ll give them the rest of the season to see if viewership dips so they can decide if they’re going to bring it back or do a series finale.
I’m really looking forward to the Geena Davis “Commander In Chief” show that starts tomorrow night; there was a great write-up in TV Guide on it. I think it’s got a lot of potential…
And “Abby” has already checked out and has her own new sitcom now. I hope she’ll come back now and then, but I noticed she wasn’t there at the start of last night’s ep when Bartlett arrived for the dedication of his library. Could anybody tell by the movement of the lower leg who it was who stepped out of the limo?
I’m really going to miss having Martin Sheen as my prez!
Forgot to mention that it’s on at 9pm on ABC. House, M.D. is on at the same time on FOX.
(A couple weeks ago, we “test drove” the show that precedes House, M.D. … Bones, about a forensic anthropologist who works with the FBI … but it was too full of spanky smart dialogue, which gets annoying.)
(SJ Murky News TV columnist) thinks CoC starts a little rough, but has potential. It’s written by the same guy who wrote the movie “The Contender” with Joan Allen; in fact, he wanted Allen for the VP role but she was unavailable. The names of the President and VP in the TV show (Bridges and Allen) are in fact tribute to the two lead actors in “The Contender”, Jeff Bridges (whom I’ve had a crush on since “TRON”) and the aforementioned Joan Allen.
Oh, and evidently Peter Coyote is the pick for the new VP, and he’s a good Marin County progressive dude, so let’s keep him employed so he can spend more money defeating Republicans. 😉
Supposedly, it focuses more on the private and family life than it does policy wonk issues, but I’m willing to give it a shot.
I watched most of the show last night, have followed a little on reruns so I don’t know a lot of the dynamics, but this year I do think I will watch regularily…I think Smits will be Pres. I also think like some others this will drag on.
I like to watch this show to maybe get some idea of what goes on inside the “monkey palace” but I expect the real life Bush, Whitehouse is verrrrrry different.
Wouldn’t it be great to have a White House reality show, filming in all offices 24 hours a day..oh yeah, I will dream on.
Wasn’t that good?! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, and am glad I taped it because so much is going on, and the dialogue is spoken so quickly, that it’s valuable to rewatch it to catch more.
I liked Jimmy Smits more last night. He seemed more to have the makings of a president .. his private conversation with Leo was such an example. And I thought Leo seemed impressed.
That reality show would be a scream!
Last night, as I was watching, I was constantly referencing the Bush White House and realized that everything that Bartlett says would never occur to Dubya. Which really scares me when I think about it.
CBS stayed in front at 8 p.m. with the rest of “60 Minutes” and “Cold Case,” scoring an 11.0/17. The second hour of “Home Edition” improved to 9.9/15 for ABC. “The West Wing” premiered to a 5.6/8 on its new night for NBC, edging “The Simpsons” and “The War at Home” on FOX (although FOX had more total viewers for the hour). The season premiere of “Charmed” posted a 2.5/4 for The WB.
Of course I watched it. I think they’re going to play us for awhile on who becomes president, but in the end it will be Smits. Alda’s version of Republicanism is so refreshing that I almost wouldn’t care if he got the White House . . . it would be very entertaining to watch somebody on the right with brains and integrity, just as a contrast to the actual incumbent and his collection of thieving prigs.
My guess is that it wasn’t CJ but Toby who leaked to the NYT . . .
I kept thinking of how funny it is that they get all these little digs into W without even half-trying.
Example: Bartlett is ballistic over who leaked sensitive material and ready to fire their ass–unlike Bush on the Plame issue.
Example: Santos is not afraid to take 5 press conferences a day, because he knows what the hell he wants to say–unlike Bush, who’s in office for crying out loud and can’t put two sentences together.
Example: Santos is down 9 points in the polls, but he’s already working on his transition team, because if he wins he wants only the best qualified people in his administration–unlike Bush, who just went ahead and gave away jobs to any old suckup who worked on his campaign.
Fill me in, please, I totally missed it — I knew it moved to Sunday, but I thought it would be on at 8 here not at freaking 7….
7? Are you in that Midwest time zone thingie? Farmer time?
Will tell you more later … or hopefully those on the East Coast are still up, and can tell you!
Ever go to TV Without Pity? They have recaps of all the shows. I haven’t been there in ages, but they probably have West Wing recaps too.
dunno how i managed to miss it, ah well, no worries.
so I can download and watch it. Should be up soon.

Yes … we should do a Commander In Chief blog tomorrow!
I’d seen the previews, and just groaned. It seemed lame. But, Tom Shales raved about it, so I decided I’d better look at it.
DAMN IT. It’s on at the same time as “House.” (Hugh Laurie deserved the Emmy.)

I’m an addict, are you kidding??
