I found the whole framing debate ultimately unsatisfying. You really made me re-think things I’d taken for granted, which is always a good thing. As you pointed out, we really didn’t disagree much except in emphasis. But some comments were disrespectful. Calling you “anti-intellectual” is ridiculously laughable.
Anyway, please cheer up. I’m sure you can take the slings and arrows, but if it helps, disagreement is healthy, and we still like you.

I had to stay away too. I can’t stand it. For a while there, I swore if I heard the word framing or Lakoff one more time, I was going to lose it once and for all.
P.S. Free Speech TV is my escape channel when I can’t take corporate media anymore but for a while they were showing Lakoff’s framing workshop video. (He has some good points! But there’s something intrinsically dishonest about that kind of communication that just GETS to me … it’s like working with people who talk to you in the couched phrasing that comes from going to too many seminars on how to communicate effectively … it just makes me want to slap ’em silly because it’s NOT the real them.)

I heard on Air America Radio, about an hour ago, that the Pentagon. . .you know the support our troops Pentagon-Rumsfeld part of the Crime Family. . .has told the troops that they CAN NOT give them the promised enlistment-or re-enlistment bonuses (remember they really upped those to something like $25,000+ to get troops to stay in the service or to enlist in the first place). “Sorry, you know just because we signed an agreement with you that we would pay you that big hunk of money for putting your ass on the line. . .doesn’t mean we really meant it.” Someone on air america suggest that then the troops should just lay down their weapons and leave. Once a contract is broken, seems like you have no obligation to fulfill it. Geeze these guys make me furious.
Not only cutting VA benefits, closing VA hospitals, making them wait as long as 3 months to receive their normal pay, cutting VA medical care, . . .Yeah, tell me how much they love these troops.

I tried to get through that thread yesterday – but didn’t make it. It probably says volumes about my IQ, but after a while it just felt like one giant mind-fuck to me.
Reminds me of the conversation we had with the guys who started the “Geek Squad” (computer hardware maintenance company that was bought out by Best Buy) years ago. They wanted to start a computer version of NPR’s “Car Talk” – thought they could make it fun. When they went on the air, all the computer geeks called in trying to out-geek the hosts.
I think all that conversation yesterday was just an attempt to out-intellectualize the hosts intellect. Just my thoughts. Hang in there Boo – we all have your back!!

That is a pretty depressing result to that poll. I would have thought the numbers would have been slightly less devastating.

This is the god’s honest truth. When I was at Stanford, many moons ago, I heard male students say — several times — about an uptight girl student, “She needs a good rape.”
When I was dating a professor of engineering, he took me to a weekend “date” at a 40-hour psychodrama marathon at the Escalan Institute. The people who went to this event all had money — it was expensive — my BF was a famed researcher who was drowning in money — and they all had top-level educations.
During a break, I heard various men who’d been to the psychodrama marathon before say that once, they took a young woman they considered uptight and pinned her down and raped her — to get her to loosen up.
Let’s just say that hearing such talk makes a woman rather wary.
That psychodrama marathon was like “Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice,” except a lot heavier — the leader, a tiny intense Chinese guy, tore into people. He left my BF a puddle of helplessness … quite a weekend. And me? I had NO clue what I was going to! Me from a farm town in Eastern Washington. Oy.

Femiphobia — whoever implied or out-right said such a thing is overlooking the fact that you started this blog with SusanHu and Maryscott on the front page — and they weren’t serving as handmaidens. In the “early days” here the place was dominated by female voices and that only grew after the pie wars. I think we’ve only recently gotten a male balance in participation.
Elitism — well, yeah, you do prefer smart people and have attracted like to like with equal measures of smart-asses, thank goodness.
Anti-intellectualism — I don’t know: Is telling it like it is the opposite of obscuring ideas and concepts with academic bullshit?

The first paragraph scared the shit out of me…here it is..
SYDNEY, Oct 20 (Reuters) – Australian quarantine officers will destroy seven pigeons imported from Canada after they were found to have been exposed to avian flu and Newcastle Disease.
All the birds were tested on arrival and three were found to have avian influenza antibodies, but did not test positive for the H5N1 strain or any other avian influenza virus.
Four other birds tested positive for Newcastle Disease antibodies. Newcastle Disease is also a highly contagious viral disease in poultry, cage and aviary birds and wild birds. It is characterised by digestive, respiratory and nervous signs.
AQIS said all the pigeons had been held in a high-level quarantine centre since their arrival in Australia.
“There is no risk to human health or other birds,” said AQIS spokesman David Finlayson.
“The detection of the antibodies demonstrates that the quarantine system, which includes a mandatory post-arrival holding period to check for disease, is working,” he said.
Finlayson said AQIS was speaking to Canadian authorities about returning the remaining birds still in quarantine. He said the birds would not be released in Australia.
Framing always struck me as remedial, and my sampling of that thread cemented the impression.

My summary of the framing thing is very similar:
Everybody uses frames. “We” need to use them better because it’s hardwired. Uh, wait, isn’t that merely a frame? And because someone disagrees with you about the worth of the frame, they are allowed to be called WRONG and told NO?? How is that both/and?? IT ISN’T, and people like the “all framing, all the time” folks are going to see that at the voting booth in 06.
You don’t get to both/and inclusivity by telling people they are wrong and starting your responses to them with “No…..”
